@aQuaLV1 You need to either skate forward or backwards or both in the process of switching directions. And it helps if you start off with a fair amount of speed before making directional changes.
@dominiqe90 "Straight Line footwork" is just a general categorical name that means any footwork that is straight. And actually, this was a tutorial request and wasn't even suppose to be part of the sport Xtreme Ice Skating. I know its' the grapevine but there's nothing I can do now. It's too late.
@reavesdagon This technique is very foreign to the body, so there's really no exercise you do to supplement strengthening of your muscles. You must practice this ice-skating movement over and over again to gain enough strength to maintain speed.
@reavesdagon Im getting the same problem. Was trying it earlier but that last bit is basically making me stop. Guess i just need to practice. I noticed ur post was a month ago, hav u got the hang of it yet? lol
I knew the backwards to forwards part but never understood the backwards to forwards bit. Can't wait to get to the rink tomorrow and practise. But i''m on figure skates so i'll have to mind my toe pick on parts :/
I have what might be a stupid question. I had tried something much simpler, turning forward to backward at speed. How much scraping should there be from the side of the skate blade. Should it be completely smooth?
And thanks for your videos, they are inspirational.
see I 'am right and as i do the trick and by the first turn(to go backwards) I turn like a lefty with the problem that my right food is in front. And i already triede than with my left food to turn but is very wierd. so i hope this is more descriptive.
You know what.. I still didn't get the turn tho.. After puttin legs behind each other then the v.. after that, nothing.. Idk how to turn and complete it lol
Nah Dan, your teaching is great! But maybe cus I really don't know how to shift hips well xD But today done it but when I come to the part where I need to do that thign with the toes.. It didn't work, I think that I need to watch it sowly to figure the secret in it :P Done it until the toe part, any tips please? :) Cus I really wana do it. Thanks alot Dan.
I left a tip but not sure if it went through. I make this comment shorter. Use your hip muscles to force your toes together. Position your arms exactly as you would position your feet, and use your arms to simulate the foot movement.
thank you very much for this great tutorial! i searched long time for such one. now i tried it and - it really work´s! ;-)) just a few details still should be improved, i think... ;) (look my video-answer) nice greetings from germany!
thank you very much for this great tutorial! i was searching long time for such one. now i´ve tried it and - it work´s! just a few details still should be improved, i think... ;)
its same like from forward, almost like mohawk transition to backward but the feet doesnt leave the ice. am i right? and its same like drunken sailor moves. well, i mean the element. correct me if im wrong
Correct on mohawk, but the Drunken' Sailor Element requires rear foot to be lifted rather than staying to the ice. You could however add your own Drunken' Sailor movements into this mix. After all, it's not part of testing yet and this footwork still has no name. So who knows. Surprise me.
Pull heels outward. Keep toes facing inward. Resist force of your feet coming a part as much as possible. Use muscles on outside of legs to keep toes together.
hey dan i need a little help...i have crossover to my right but not to the left also i have it backwards too but not to the left..have any tips for me?
I'll try to but I only have 4 days to cover mandatory items like the beginner and intermediary skill sets plus all the footwork, turns and jumps that goes with them.
hey dan m8, i play ice hockey for newcastle and england under 19's, so am a natural skater. i had a look at you tutorials a while back, and now im doing all sorts of tricks lol. il get some of my videos up, iv got some real head turners lol. if you could post up sumore videos of slow footwork etc i would be very gratefull as im tryin to put alot of footwork together and making alot of different variations. thanks alot dan, keep skating
At first i'll give you 5* for each video Dan. I'm so happy about your videos 'cause they help me so much. I watched the videos 10times :D and now my drunken' sailor works :D So thank you so much and i hope you coin more tricks to show it us :)
Just to say your a master to say the least i watched all your videos and try drunken sailor straight line footwork eagle stop and scissor stop is the ones i really want to do. don't know if i am doing straight line to slow and nearly fall over and stop same as drunken salor and tips for these stops and tricks
Your a great ice skater and your videos are very helpful, i think you are a great teacher to, thanks for making these videos they are making me better at ice skating, keep em coming thankyou !
Question mr dan Im using inline skates at the moment I have'nt been ice skating for some time ,but since i have been using inline I have improved drastically can crossover & do the basics still trying to learn backwards crossover on my weak foot/side.Anyway using your guide will I be able to transfer this onto my inlines??? Ice is way nicer then smooth concrete & more glide proof.
Not skating for a while is OK. Your passion will bring you back to the rink. I apologize for being ambiguous about Straight-line Footwork. Straight-line footwork is ANY footwork done in a straight line. ANYTHING, so long as your path is straight. Please refer to my other straight-line video tutorial.
hiya dan ive een tryin to lear grapevine but i just dont get it lol i can do the first part but then im lost ive been skating for bout half a year is that bad??

Hi,
How do you fain momentum?
I can turn from forwards to backwards and then from backwards to forwards and that's it. I stop.
How can I gain momentum and continue to move?

Bring toes together and finish rotation with toes together. Let toes fall a part back into original positioning.
