No, skip the axe, use a sledge hammer and a wedge. It's much more forgiving, gratifying, less clumsy, and harder to lop your foot off...

More forgiving, but I'd still say that a splitting maul is faster and more gratifying. Any tool is only as clumsy as the user, the thing is an axe shows this up more than a hammer.
