  • I want to say thank you to the Australian's for serving in the Vietnam war with the the U.S. and I would also like to say sorry for your losses for a war we should have never started.

  • @walksthroughstorms The US didn't start the war, you guys just have a habit of getting involved in other peoples conflicts.

  • I was 17. 101 Airborne Divison. 327recon.

  • There is actually a U.S. airborne unit nicknamed "The Herd" - 173rd Airborne Brigade, which served in Vietnam from 1967 - 1971, from north of Saigon in the south to Kontum area in the central highlands.

I realize this is an Aussie song about Aussie troops. The reputation of the Aussies is that they were some mean muvvafuckers. They killed a lot of NVA and VC. Best soldiers in the world.

  • good music and clip

  • It is unfortunate that the contribution/experiences of Australians in the Vietnam war are often forgotten or overlooked. Thankyou for your service. I know many Americans owe their lives to you all.

  • the hip hop wrecks the video

  • I think we all need to just stop and realise that the song is about far more important things than if you like hip/hop. I know (having seen the making of doco) this clip was made by The Herd for their version of the song. I've heard the original (I may even prefer it) but I think that you would be amiss to say these boys are being disrespectful or doing anything other than making the words/message of such a intense and poignant song more accessible to a younger audience by covering it.

  • @Jadeaffection Well Said friend, I much prefer the original, but I love Aussie hip hop. RESPECT :-)

  • @beetz1979 Thanks! *blushes* I don't get up on my soap-box much so it's good to know that, when I do, I make some sort of sense. xx

  • @Jadeaffection I think you're right. This is their interpretation of an Aussie classic, and they do pay tribute to the original. Honestly as a descendant of a Vietnam Vet, this version is one of the best, it does the original justice and yet, conveys the same message as the original..Respect to John, Redgum and The Herd

  • Its like you people don't give a crap about these people. Many of them didn't even sign up to go to Vietnam, they war just conscripted. so can you guys shut the hell up and respect the people who died for us.

  • Anyone know the name of the actor in this?

  • I dunno why youre gettin thumbs down for your question mate but for your info these blokes are actual vietnam vets not actors.

  • Dick cheese

  • bit of collateral

  • Would all you dickheads HUSH UP! FUCK! listen to it again, there isn't anything wrong with it! it's just sung by THE HERD! a reconstruction! get over urselves!

  • i just got my chatcam working!!! msn me jane24belle N

  • what was the miniseries called?

  • Attack Force Z (1982)

  • thanks

  • I understand why some ppl think that this song is disrespectful - but it most definitely is a tribute to veterans and their families. This version helped young ppl change their attitudes to the men and women that have put their lives on the line in Vietnam, and all wars. It drew attention to the issues facing veterans - something our politicians avoid. It forced many ppl to think and reflect on the massive sacrifice involved - whether or not you 'like' the song.

  • What a load of crap. This is discusting. You are taking the piss out of our diggers(aussie slang for War Veterans) I dont know who 'The Herd' are, but they are SHIT! The original SONG can be found on my profile. This is just utter crap.

  • you do realise that these are real vets in the clip you narrow minded knob

  • Did you bother to actually READ my comment? I was talking about the 'The Herd' NOT the vietnam vets you idiot. The original song was written by John Schuman and performed by him in "Redgum". He is the guy in this video having nightmares and also in the original video. In this particular video the original soundtrack has been REPLACED by this (c)rap soundtrack.

  • @zerowildfire

John Schuman sings on this song so maybe its just youwho does not want its message again presented in aid of supporting youth understanding of war

  • By the way. Theses are not 'real vets' in the clip as you state. They are actors from the mini-series. Didnt you even see Mel Gibson from 00:11 to 00:14?

Read my original comment again befor you make any furthur stupid comments.

  • I know you were talking about the herd, who else would you be talking about? the old guys at the end are the vets i was talking about. And yes i know who redgum is, i grew up listening to the original and its one of my favourite songs. I was merely commenting because if you think their taking the piss you need your head read, if the real vets who appear at the thought they were taking the piss they wouldn't have agreed to be in it

  • The music WITH THIS, is NOT the ORIGINAL soundtrack to the video. Once again, im simply stateing 'my' opinion about what I belive to be Crap music. Unlike some people(you) I dont go out of my way to verbally abuse people unless they choose to start something. I dont have a problem with others stateing 'their opinion' either. Thats what Youtube is here for. Everyone has an opinion and they are entitled to it. But you just couldnt help yourself, you had to make it personal.

  • ummm, ok, i agree my first comment was stupid, thats fair enough, but did you read my second comment? I was merely stating that i disagreed that the video is taking the piss regardless of whether its the oriinal soundtrack or not...the truth is that this video WAS shot for the herd's cover, John Schuman participated and has perfromed it with them on stage

  • They didnt agree to be in this crap version. They were in the video with the ORIGINAL song. Not this rap rubbish. Also, unlike some people(you) I dont make personal attacks on people when they state their opinion. Everyone is entitled to speak their mind here on Youtube without having to put up with abuse from people like you. I noticed you only abused me and no one else who left negative comments. Are you really so gutless that you can only pick on someone on the other side of the planet?

  • they did agree to be in this version this is the version those clips were shot for at the end, and i agreed that my first comment was dumb, but i haven't made any personal comments since unlike the tirade you continue on, and i only commented on yours because when i first viewed the page it was the only negative comment at the top without clicking on the view all option, so i apologise, but check your facts regarding this clip and lets leave it at that ok

  • "unlike the tirade you continue on" Unfortunately, as per usual, the net was slow to load my comment. I dint think it was loaded so I wrote it again. Not deliberatly repeating my comments to cause trouble. Also dont know why it was posted as a new comment when it was a reply.

  • where can i find the miniseries?

  • Shity version!!! Give original pls!!!

  • this is really gay just gay

  • No the Herd got me and everyone else thinking about "the Veterans" and the issues involving returned servicemen from Vietnam you just made the video for the track. The bulk of the coverage of the release of this version of the song was about the Herd themselves not the clip, why? Because the clips is obvious and uninteresting.....

  • ......The original video for Redgum (From which you obviously ripped off the performance aspects) with the real Vietnam war footage intercut with the herd performing would have been far more relevant and dynamic than this pointless exercise.......

  • .....So you got a decent budget and made a video for a track that did well due to its politics and triple J and the ABC in general's coverage of it. In other words you got a free ride and now that ride is over. Its pretty weak to try and hide behind the social concious politics shield that the coverage of this release provides and not answer genuine criticism of your work.....

  • ......Your latest clip for Urthboy is a dog, really dreadful doesn't do the song any justice. If you are going to keep making clips I think you need to stop tuning in to the accolades you want to hear and the criticism you don't. There are allot of other hunger keen talented clip makers out there who will breeze right by you industry connections or not.

  • ".... This version of a classic song in utter rubbish! ...."

".... I agree ... this version is just complete rasisim ...."

".... "No War" really!? well that's the primary school age audience taken care of now how about the rest of us.?...."

To all of that I say simply : It got you thinking of the veterans, and it got a good portion of the aussie teenage crowd thinking of them.

ANYTHING that promotes and encourages people to think about the diggers themselves is excellent.

  • This is a wake up for everyone to think and thank all those who went to vietnam and help them.

  • quit ur bitching, times have changed

  • this is such a good song. we should not forget what our soldiers have sacrificed. go australia

  • The term "The Herd", is the nickname given to the American 173rd Airborne Brigade by themselves. In 1965, the first Australian infantry batallion to serve in Viet Nam was 1RAR, which was attatched to, and operated as part of, the 173rd Airborne Brigade and therefore is the only Australian batallion that can refer to itself as, "The Herd". I'm one of "The Herd".

  • Wicked remake to the classic red gum song.Dont forget to say thanks to a digger on ANZAC day at the rsl club..Those guys were bloody champions

  • Guys come one, you did well when the song was released and we all know how well it pays to have mates in radio to give you a leg up, but can you stop giving us Pyrite and calling it Gold. The video really isn't very good, can you just put it to bed and do something new. "No War" really!? well that's the primary school age audience taken care of now how about the rest of us.?

  • I agree with kfjar this version is just complete rasisim

no offense but you need the classic

  • This version of a classic song in utter rubbish!

  • Yep, support our returned service men and women. But just don't let 'em send any more.

  • One of the best songs and videos Ive seen in a while.

  • omg i luv this song... i cant imagine the shit the vets had to go thru... im a very proud patriotic aussie... god bless u guys and the soliders serving our country today

  • eery

  • This song still sends shivers down my spine. The Herd are an awesome Oz hip hop outfit, I encourage you all to check them out. They originally did this song on JJJ radio as a live cover of the original from Red Gum. It has done a wondrefull job of keeping the memory of our Vietnam Vets alive in the younger people here. Support our returned service men and women.

  • I've been looking for the pairing of this video and song for a LONG time xD Thanks, man
