That has to be the coolest rest area in the country. U can't beat stopping on an island to see an amazing view of the lake and the mountains around it. It looks like a great place 2 go fishing.

This stretch of highway right here....ahh the memories. Rode with a church member to Nashville from Atlanta to celebrate my birthday with a former mentor whose birthday is two weeks before mine. I was 15 about to turn 16. On the way back, I volunteered to drive the Ford Explorer--at the time I had a learner's permit. Took the wheel in Murfreesboro and guided that Ford down Monteagle like a pro...at 70 mph (oops).
Oh yeah, this was my first time driving outside of Georgia.
The first time I watched this video was shortly after I went to Florida with my family in January 2009... Traversing the mountain in this direction in the early morning hours of January 3rd, 2009, we encountered some of the thickest fog you could ever see outside of Great Britain... I had only been a passenger on this section and the westbound section... until the early morning of July 24th 2009 when I brought a Prevost H3-45 motor coach down off that mountain (Murfreesboro to Atlanta).

Love the video and song compilation. I remember taking this route from Indy to Florida as a kid-beautiful area. Later my future wife and I were stranded in the Best Western @ Monteagle during the 93' storm of the century and survived on Hostess ding-dongs and beer - lol!
@1xoirc I'd be happy with 48, Alaska and Hawaii don't really pique my interest that high. Really I'd like to drive all 47,000+ miles of Interstate highways in the 48 states.
Freewayjim, Good music. I did only both sides of Nickajack lake in 2003. What was interesting was that there was fireworks stands on both sides of the lake.
Pretty much every exit along I-24 in Marion Co., TN has at least one tastefully tacky-looking fireworks stand. It's one of Marion Co's claims to fame. The one in the median at Exit 158 is the king of all of them. In fact, the westbound lanes of 24 at that exit have extra reflectors on the left shoulder to catch the attention of all the people who may be gawking at that store!
I was on my way from Baltimore to Birmingham, AL when I saw the stands. In Knoxville, I saw a fireworks store that was about the same size as a Wal-Mart. When I went on 59 from Chattanoga to BHM, I saw fireworks flying across 59.
Overtaking is strictly forbidden in every way in Belgium, passing someone on the right in every circumstance is considered an offense and they'll fine you heavily when they catch you doing it.
Basicaly, you can only pass someone on the right when the traffic is queuing.
The reason far that regulation is that it's also illegal to stay in the left lane longer than the time needed for overtaking or moving out of the way for letting someone leave the entrance lane safely.
Interesting you mentioned cops are strict about prohibiting drivers from passing on the right. Are Belgian cops good about ticketing drivers that drive slowly in the left lane(s) of traffic?
One thing I hate about American drivers, particularly in big metro areas, is how often one driving will run into slowpoke drivers in the left lane(s), forcing one to pass on the right lane(s). That's a big reason why passing on the right, much as I greatly dislike doing that, is more common here. :(
I was more intending my post to be a reply to what wimpie wrote about Belgian cops, but thanks for the compliment anyway!
Loved your choice of music for this video, and enjoyed this video even more, as I've traveled this I-24 stretch plenty of times growing up on the way to visiting my dad's family in Georgia(from Chicago), and still travel it every so often today(albeit not as often as I'd like). I'm familiar(not surprisingly) with what's off some of those exits, too!
Yeah, I think they're quite thorough in that. But as you might have heard, there's a big difference in Belgium between the 2 substates in how things are handled, Flemish cops are way more strict, stuff in the French side is quite corrupt.
In Flanders we've got alot of automated equipment to catch left lane truck drivers as there's a a general left lane prohibitation for trucks all over the country.
We also use a minimum speedlimit for certain lanes.
Most other European countries have laws prohibiting overtaking on the right (left in the UK) as well.
In the U.S. State of Illinois, where I live, there is a law on the books that prohibits "driving considerably slower than the flow of traffic while in the left lane." In other words, overtaking on the right is still technically legal, but driving slowly in the left lane for any prolonged amount of time can get a driver fined.
I vaguely remember hearing about that law passing a few years ago, but only because a friend of mine happened to tell me of the law's passage. From my experiences driving around Illinois(not just in the Chicago area), it doesn't seem to me like the law is enforced much. Maybe I could be wrong, since I'm sure there are many others who drive a lot more than I do, and would have a much better idea of how well this law is enforced....
It is illegal only in some states but people will do it anyway because some drivers use the far left lane for cruising instead of passing, we call them Left Lane Hogs/Bandits and I do begrudge anyone passing the on the right.
Hey hey now, that was a great video. How about the 300? man, what a driver. Pretty good move cutting him off. Naturally, I enjoyed the comments and certainly enjoyed seeing you put that hammer down and it looked as you were tempting fate, any protection? good job as usual 5*
I was photographing the road (see opening picture) down the hill when people started passing me on both sides at 70 MPH, we can't have that. I wasn't tempting fate :)
No lighting other than what nature has to offer although I will admit to slightly color correcting the footage with my editing software to brighten it up a little bit.
I use a Sony Handycam TRV70 that uses MiniDV tapes, nothing special to be honest. I'll be getting a new HiDef camera soon, hopefully that will look special.

Thats tennessee drivers for you. I live in Cookeville and have not yet been in a wreck
its a wonder that I've been so lucky. The inclines around here are steep and narrow and people go just as fast. Scary!

Overtaking on the right is perfectly legal when there's a regular lane of travel. It's illegal when you use the shoulder to do it.

You do know overtaking on the right is forbidden? Or that rule doesn't apply in the us?
