I was a crew chief/ door gunner in the 240th Assault Helicopter Company. Even now I am astonished at what we did and thankful to God we survived. I never once thought that I would. One thing I learned in Viet Nam and Cambodia is that there is nothing, absolutely nothing more precious than a common infantry soldier or mud Marine and that there is nothing then or now that you wont do for him, nothing.
Damn nice vid, hate to say this but the song even goes well
carried alot of guys in to some nasty places(they weren't real happy with us then ;) )
but, man did they love us when we pulled them out of the nasty :D
The huey was a tough old bird too ... 13 minutes shot to hell transmission fluid gone and she still brought us home. Fly with hole in the blades. above 40 knots fwd speed didnt really need the tail rotor as long as there was a straight stretch of ground to land on
this bird brought my Grandpa and his 7 brothers in and out of Vietnam, my Grandpa was with the 155th AHC i have a picture of his bird it hot hit with 20mm AA fire, hydraulic and fuel lines severed, holes pepperes the aircraft, but she still brought him home
I loved flying this bird. When the 507th Medevac left Fort Hood, they converted to Black Hawks, but my time in the unit was all UH-1.. We sure flew a lot of missions in this bird. I never had a UH-1H let me down. Not in the Gulf War, and never in all the missions we flew. Long live the Huey and Medevac! Dustoff 307 signing out.
I wonder if you ask current US Military pilots and crewchiefs that have crewed both would say which they want to fly into combat today in places like Iraq and Afghanistan? What would they choose?
They are not totally new designs. They are modified versions of the UH-1 airframe. All the more proof that the Huey is the greatest utility helicopter ever.
How'd you work that out, the fact they they didn't totally redesign the airframe makes it the greatest uh ever? How about the Lynx then: the new AW-159 Wildcat is not a total redesign but is significantly better, what does that mean? It's also kept a lot of the features of the Lynx but is improved so what, making it the best utility helicopter in the world? No
Anyway if it's so good why has the US army abandoned it for the Black Hawk?
Beware that I am a U.S. Army Aviator. I do not have the space here to get into the minutia of this topic nor am I inclined to discuss such things in an unsecured forum.
The Huey that I flew was an analog bird. you get into it, crank it, fly it, treat it right, do proper maintenance and it will bring you home. The more systems you add the higher your incidents of failure.
Black hawk, Apache, Kiowa Warrior, well I guess you never heard of federal corporate welfare. Marines birds are better!
El Salvador Air Force has the UH-1H/M for over 30 years, more than 80 helicopters have come including the M model for combat, and it has prove to be one piece of machine for combat and rescue missions, for that reason is that they have overhauled 12 hueys for extended life period to service our air force for 10 or more years.
those hueys we are seeing hoovering over in Iraq currently-are modified and upgraded its boosters technically, they can fly with better speed compare to those they used in vietnam.. they are just same variants from what they used in Vietnam.
Its simple the best helicopter ever and allways be.. like they say..-When the last crew take the last black hawk to the museum the ride back Home will be in the Huey
Amen brother. This bird will never go away. Just like the -52, ya just reengine it and shake down the airframe and you'll be killin' snakes and toe tappin' that slick the next day!
An exelent tribute to the ultimate workhorse helicopter. I can't even begin to describe how sad it is to finally see the army retire these wonderful birds. The local national gaurd aviation unit just retired them and I already miss the sound of the Huey.
very nice

The army could buy three UH-1's (at least) for the cost of single blackhawk.
While its true that the Blackhawk has more lift capability and a trifle more speed, it is achieved at a price that a Huey did not exact.

AT 3:48, I wonder how much that line of helicopters cost to make and how much they would sell for in the time the picture was taken?
