@robertgift There are a number of reasons for a signal to change. I work with engineers who have had signals drop right in thier faces. The most common reason is broken rail. Like I said, there are a number of reasons.
I was seeing a red and blue reflection off the rear of the red car there, before you panned left. Was that from some emergency vehicle parked on or near the tracks that had something to do with the emergency stop? It starts at about 0:18 before the train even gets there.
No there were no emergency vehicles in the area related to this stop. The Hyattsville police station is on the opposite side of the tracks from there it could have been a police car on an unrelated issue.
Norfolk Southern had that same problem a little while back. Except this NS train was hauling a long freight train with a heavy Transformer in the front. -Great video~awesome catch-
Technically, unless CSX's operating rules are different from the other Class 1 railroads, crews aren't supposed to initiate an emergency brake application for a dropped signal.
@bubba2781 I may be wrong, but I believe after a true emergency stop, they DO have to walk the whole train, so if they didn't, than it was probably just a hard stop.
It was not going very fast, thus the fast stop, about 5-6 long car lengths. There was no time for a dynamic brake app., the whining is radiator fans, which are computer controled. At :52, you hear the air compressor cut in.
Wrong. GE locomotives can be set to apply full dynamics during a crew member initiated emergency application. A kicker will not cause the dynamics to "swipe in" but if the air brake computer acknowledges the emergency application was made via the brake handle or the emergency valve they can be set to apply full dynamic brakes. This only applies to engines with extended range dynamic brakes. Tapered or flat dynamics are not capable of this process. I know U.P. has this feature loked out tho.
Signals are not supposed to "drop" - or go from "green" to "red". This could mean track is broken or a train has just approached the track to you etc... You can hear the emergency brakes at :25, a rush of air. Then you can hear he throws it into dynamic 8 and shuts the dynamics off just after he stops.
All we heard was that when he came around the turn the signal ahead went from green to red. There was a track crew working in the area and it is possible that something they did caused this to happen.
wat was the aftermath?,what happened?
CSX2665 1 year ago
@CSX2665
As I recall they took about 10 minutes or so talking to dispatch then built air back into the train and moved on.

I'd say it's closer to someone ran in front of him at the crossing.
iceman977th 1 year ago
Nice steady tripod-mounted video.
Did the horn at :22 have anything to do with his braking?
Ever learn why the signal went from green to red?
That should never happen.
Thank you.
robertgift 1 year ago
@robertgift
Not sure about the horn though its not an area where they normally sound the horn,
Never heard why the signal changed and as you say it should not have happened.

I don't know much about train operations, so can someone explain WHY a signal would go from green to red [with no yellow]???

Thanks, usually these empty racks are moving through here at track speed (50MPH here). This one was going much slower for some reason - good thing!
bubba2781 1 year ago
in your description for this video, that same signal problem has happened here in Fostoria, Ohio. Not just once but 4 times to 4 different trains.

I always like the 6000 because they have good dynamic brakes. And when you're going down sandpatch thats a big plus!
fizzlejibbs 2 years ago
nice AC6000, i rarely see those anymore. the fins are getting too big on the newer GE's though, in my opinion
rockguitarist946 2 years ago
As I understand it the 6000's are all in storage in Cumberland MD - what a waste.
bubba2781 2 years ago
really, i call it the EMD AC6000 because thats one reason CSX doesnt like them anymore, basically an EMD, despite 6000 hp

Good brakes!!!

thats right they are supposed to make a controlled stop
joelkram 2 years ago 5
@NSguy07 what happenensto a freight train when it goes into Emergency?
andybowe 1 year ago
@NSguy07 You are correct. Rulebook states bring train to a safe stop in accordance with good train handling.

Don't think they did this time. The issue was not with the train.

@bubba2781 If a train dumps the air for what ever reason, a crew member must walk the train to check that the slack action did not damage anything.
osrx1 1 year ago
yeah but unless you have a fuckin train master or road foreman standin in your face no one ever does!
joelkram 2 years ago
@tennismaniac7359 Don't have to walk the train in Canada if the air recovers and you can pull normally.

And, amazing video!

to put into perspective how much weight is back there she stopped real fast
justin0185 3 years ago
While the autoracks weigh enough as is this train was all empty so the total train weight was not the much.

Who says that a freight train can't stop on a dime?
TheRealTedMarshall 3 years ago
all depends on the speed and tonnage.
detroitsports77 3 years ago
Just say that there's a dime under it...no one's going to pick it up to check. :)

jim why did the signal switch from green to red

he did stop on a dime, how long was the train?

It was about 80 autoracks but all were empty
bubba2781 3 years ago
screeching stop, shouldnt there have been more notice?

I think that was the problem. It must have been some kind of signal malfunction.
