from a bands standpoint that style of writing requires more of an outlook on many other daunting areas whereas instrumental music is more of a free spirited kinda thing which most professional musicians rarely have that kinda independence. that's why when people try to say Vai and them are better than Petrucci i laugh cause he just had fun with it on there level and clearly wrote Suspended Animation for G3 material Praise J.P.

Musically, creatively, compositionally, Petrucci is much better than those guitarists. It's not about shredding and emotion. People think they know music, but they haven't explored deep into it. You look at real jazz, real classical, Eastern music, then back to Western rock, and you'll understand more why Petrucci is a much better GUITARISTS (not shredder) than those four you named.

the Glass Prison arpeggios are a fucking pain in the ass to play it with alternate picking,rather impossible to me, which is the way JP plays it. Constant Motion is another song that features another crazy sweeping section, and almost every song on TOT.
