If you're in the area, his band is going to be playing the Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe, PA maybe 2 hours from NYC, on October 8. His show is like a tidal wave.
This cat has so many stories because he is such a part of the fabric of music history. The dude has contributed to so much of the history which brought us here to today. And I can say that Billy Cobham Jr. has played my drums!
So I guess they re recorded "stratus" for Fruit Of The Loom as well, but they only ended up using the re recording of "Crosswinds". Drum N Voice 3 supposedly coming out this November/December!!
I'll never forget meeting him at drum corps practice in 78. He showed up and I asked him if he could play hambone. (backsticking) He laughed and did this slap thing. No no what I mean is this and tried to show him back sticking but I had a cast on my hand. Later he signed it. He was such a down to earth guy to talk to.
I could be wrong but it seems that from what he hums and the description he gives of the Hancock solo, that he's talking about the track Right Off which is on the original release.
@phillyphife i used to have this record. one piece of vinyl, and both sides had one continues jam session. soundtrack to Jack Johnson documentary. this record along with Witches' Brew, i guess, sparked the whole fusion thing that followed.
he may have lost some chops due to age but the only drummer I ever heard that was better than him is Elvin Jones. In the 70's and 80's nobody could touch Cobham as far as chops
As the promoter of his show here in Jim Thorpe, I worried about the age factor too. Plus I had seen him live in 1973. I promise you, there was no reason to worry. He was like a tsunami behind those drums. And he had a great band, just tremendous.
The whole album is awsome. I think the tune is Stratus. It really showcases the late Tommy Bolin's Guitar vitousity. That tune is covered by many people including Jeff Beck, too much!
this is so cool... when I discovered Birds of Fire and the whole MO experience, I was ecstatic about this group, so tight and, transporting. Then reading some liner notes about the drummer being from Panama (I'm Panamanian also)I was floored, this machine-like perfection of rhythm, it was and is such an honor. Long live institutions like him

Know what you mean. His rhythmic control is so precise that he *seems* like a machine.
Check out DYBTBv_h4CQ for Billy having a bit of fun with Herbie Hancock.

It's refreshing to see Mr. Cobham's personal side, other than him playing a set of drums.

What Billy sad at the end is the single most real thing I have ever heard. Wonderfully simple take on life and it's many problems. Brilliant advise!

Great story. Long Live Cobham.

Perhaps some coincidental music in the
background? That's Elvin Jones playing
on Peace One & Piece Two? I forget the
title.
