They could topple goliath like nothing. Anyway, muay boran > muay thai. But anyway, it's the artist. A small factor of the style but that's not that big of a deal, it's the artist. And MMA isn't exactly the determiner of what is effective, stuff like muay boran are to dangerous, it's ring fighting.

Muay Chaiya is Muay Boran from the southern area of Thailand.

Muay Korat is north.

Muay Lopburi is central.

Muay Ta Sao is north.

And Muay Thai is the competition sport variant of Muay Boran.

So yes, they are similar in the same way that a father and son are similar.

I've tried to convince some people outside of Thailand about it all, but they still want to believe that Muay Thai in the ring is all Muay Thai has to offer. As we already know, Muay Thai Boran is the parent art of the sport version. Sport Muay Thai has been watered-down to prevent any serious harm and reduce fatalities. There are weight classes in sport Muay Thai, but Muay Boran teaches you how to defend yourself against opponents of ANY size !

I'm not too familiar with kalari[ppayattu], but... judging from what very little I have seen of this style... I've noticed a few similarities. I wouldn't mind learning more about it if I had access to an instructor. A lot of Muay Boran techniques have poetic names relating to various characters and events that have appeared and occured within the Ramayana epic... and a lot more ! (i.e. "Rama Walks Into The Forest" is the poetic name for the stepping knee attack.)

erm.. i believe buay thai chaiya is the first form of muay thai, then it evolved to muay thai boran (which is the most dangerous type, made to kill) and now its muay thai, the modern form.

All these people in here saying muay boran isn't effective know nothing and are talking out their asses. Muay thai is a sportified version of muay boran, and this was done so there would be less fatalities in the ring. Boran is battlefield tested and lethal. The killing blows have been removed for the ring version of muay thai. There are other versions of boran as well. Korat, thosao, lopburi and chaiya are all parts of it.

This "form" (as you call it) of Muay Thai is the ORIGINAL form once used in ancient Siam to kill the enemy as quickly as possible. The form of Muay Thai seen in the ring was designed for scoring points. There are RULES in the sport version to prevent fatalities, but not in Muay Thai Boran. Tony Jaa spices it up in the movie "ONG-BAK" using acrobatic moves making it all seem impractical, but Muay Boran IS far more practical for real life battles than Muay Thai in the ring.

Modern day Muay Thai has everything, but one. Ground fighting, grappleing. That is why Muay Thai fighters have a problem dealing with Sanshou fighers. 95% of fights wind up on the ground, if someone like a Gracie style fighter gets you into a submission, you are done. This part of Muay Thai attends to that need.
