I am glad that you weren't offended, however I myself have a son who is 13 and autistic and it was very painful for me to sit there for the retard dialogue to go on and on and on. The point could have been made better and without inflicting what i was feeling during that part of the movie. I fight for my son and for others rights. Stiller needs to be knocked down a peg or two.
If tropic thunder got under your skin, you should have seen "There's something about Mary". with ben stiller saying he keeps his "retard in a cage"....that came out years ago. Is there a video coming out about that film also?
I watched your video, and you make some very valid points. What people fail to realize is that Ben Stiller was parodying how Hollywood makes these movies about mentally handicapped people because they know it's an automatic quick buck, and an automatic Oscar; that's their goal. In other words, Stiller is saying that Hollywood is so full of itself, they feel they're untouchable. It's a parody of the industry, not a parody of the mentally disabled. I myself am autistic and had no problems with it.
I wish he would see this. Jill, you did a really good job and you represent so well. It was not angry or hateful. Just facts. Everything you said was so acurate. People will hear you.
He can't undo the movie but I would like to see him do something on the flipside of TT. It can be done. The Ringer was a great movie that did great job. It might heal some of those wounds that he's caused.
...and of course then never do a movie like TT again.
I didn´t see the movie, but I think this girl express herself very clear and if she is talking for the people with disabilities, what she does in a very remarkable way. I will like to hear what Mr. Stiller has to say about.
I agree with what you are saying. I understand because I have a disabillity. You did a great job and hope you speak more about this. I do however, don't think Ben stiller is a bad man. I think he's funny.
Thanks for this Jill. I want you to know that I've got a learning disabilty and some special needs I was born with and I'm also a Special Olympics Athlete in Indiana too. I've been a swimmer, bowler, and a basketball player. On my basketball team you can say I'm one of the key players and I'm totally offended by the R-word. I also am a musician sometimes people who hate my music call me the r-word because they thinkt this is the best I can do when I can do better.
thank you to Jill and The Arc for standing up for those with disabilities. i think this serves as a powerful tool to help those without understanding be able to better relate. It seems to be a sad reality that people lack compassion for those issues that are not personal to them, but steps such as these may help to solidify the truth that we are always speaking of our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children, partners, etc. Thank you~
I'm not a person with disabilites. But, I process things slowly, so nearly always feel like I am at a disadvantage to others. I really liked this video and applaud Jill for speaking so eloquently.
First of all B.Stiller has nothing to do with what happens to everyone out there. He has no control over what goes on. I feel for you all. But has anyone heard, just ignore it. It seems no one understands what they are talking about in the movie. All Rob's character was getting at is that you have to play a disable part to have a better chance to win a oscar. B.Stiller is not a bad guy at all. Everyone in the world just needs to deal with the fact that everyone has a right to say what they want.
This video was excellent!!! I really hoped millions of people view it. It is such a joy to see people with disabilities advocating for themselves. We are a large group much larger than any other minority group and we need to be heard. We are proud to be part of this amazing community. Many thanks to the ARC of Virginia for making us all look good. I hope Ben Stiller reaches back out to our community. Thank you, Debra Ruh
I saw this movie the other day and realized it wasnt that funny but it had it's moments. However with the "r-word" controversy, I can see how it is hurtful and be affending. However, people with disabilities need to accept the fact that people will not change. The word re-tard will always be used. Human nature isn't perfect; never will be. Ben Stiller didnt have plans to offend people. He jsut wanted to make some people laugh and sell movie tickets.
If people never change, why is it that it is no longer socially acceptable (not that it ever was) to use the n-word, and other offensive racial and ethnic slurs??? So I fail to see how people with intellectual disabilities have to sit back any longer and accept people continuing to slur them - and others - with this epithet. Human nature is marked, in part, or ought to be, by a striving to be better than before. This callous disregard and hurtfulness must stop. BRAVO, Jill, for speaking up!
I disagree with yourdaddy1010, I think that if this is something that hurts people - anybody, then it needs to be fought for., and Jill, I agree with you 100% about the hurtfulness of the word.
What I have to point out though, is that Tropic Thunder was a satire. Ben Stiller wasn't making fun of people with disabilities through his dialogue, but he was parodying the outlandish portrayal of different groups of people by the media. He does the same for blacks (young and old), italians, & chinese
My heart breaks after seeing this video. These people are not "too sensitive". They have been mocked and belittled too often in movies and tv shows and I am proud of them for deciding not to take it anymore. Any one who thinks they are being too sensitive should truly think about how they would feel if their brother or sister had an intellectual disability and how much it would hurt to hear them being disrespected.
Ben, you got schooled! Let's see if you have the honor to respond.

Lots of hate words aren't used any more - except by extremists. Why do you think this word "will always be used"?
