Can you get speed restrictors put into these engines aswell? Just i have been to a exhibition (all american diesel locos) They all had restrictors so as you couldn't just whack the controller right up and have the loco pull out like car in a drag race. It made everything pull out at a 'Real and belivable' speed.
I like it. The only thing is the beats are not synchronised to the wheels (some folks want everything), I am counting 6 to 7 beats and it "should be" 4 even though it is 4 cylinder.
@984francis Hi Thank you for the interest. This was one of the first ones I built so I was still learning. I have added cams and hall sensors if it is especially important, but that is a big job and most opt for syncro via software.
I wish I had the money and space to do this kind of stuff. The Steam-Based trains always fascinated me, and yet, even if I got this as a standalone, I get the feeling it just wouldn't be the same as if I could get even a basic set of track, an engine, and one or two cars.
Curse having little to no money to spend on hobbies.
Hi I have the same model and I recently took the body shells off to have a look at mounting a decoder and speaker. I have to chop in the decoder into the existing loco wiring, easy enough but is there room for the decoder within the boiler/smokebox? Where is your decoder?
Is the speaker in the tender? If it is in the tender I take it that you had to cut away some of the plastic moulding that forms the coal bunker,?
Hi, i need help. i have a train the same size as the "duchess" and i have nothing else with it. (its just a train with nothing. i want to add the noises. How can i add sound effects and controll them? and how much will it cost for the same system you have? plz answer i would like o improve my engines! thx
@hellstrinity01 Hi you need firstly a dcc controller eg NCE or Bachmann Dynamis. Then you need to add a DCC sound decoder to the loco for the sound. This loco can be purchased from most hobby shops less the smoke and lights.I use the NCE DCC Controller ant that cost about 130 GBP. Best of luck
Hi, the engines you have adapted with lights and sound are fantastic. I haven't seen an engine look and sound like its prototype before. Do you customise engines for other enthusiasts (hint)?
Yes I do. As to cheap......well that really depends on your view point. A sound decoder will set you back 100 GBP + the loco. Hornby do 1 for about 170 GBP. If you type this in the youtube search "DCC Sound & Light 6230 " you can see this loco running on the guys layout who purchased it from me.
I cannot really remember but I am 80% sure it does coast without chuffing (as it should). Now you can ask this guy Stuart he is the new owner of this loco.
This is the description of it on youtube
DCC Sound & Light 6230
He has a great layout and the duchess looks the part on it. From a distance you can hardly see the express lights.
I used 2 small LED's on the green function set on firebox flicker. 2k resistance on the blue wire and both LED's wired in parallel. The lens of the LED measures about 2mm so I drilled 2 holes 2mm dia in the smoke box door for mounting. The motor sits right up against the firewall so you need tho modify the motor housing slightly to get the LED's in. I could have used SMD's but I couldnt get the right colour.
Thanks for looking and comments. Speakers used were lok 46mm and 20mm in parallel. Fully sealed. I have a lok programmer and to be honest I use some unconventional methods in a way to achieve the end result. eg just purchased 6 videos of early era steam locos and I can take some sound recordings from there.(not preserved stuff as it is only a representation of locos today) Most important save each programme as you modify it and once you are happy go from there.
is it stock from hornby i there was a mistake at my modle local model shop and he oderd hornby sound fitted Duchess one for me i have told him and he is fine but after see thing vid i like it???
Thanks mate for having a look. No this is a duchess with a loksound, lights etc added by me. I have not seen or heard the New Hornby Duchess as I am really interested. I don't think it will have the lights on it.
hanks very much, I sold it on ebay for 264.00 GBP. I can build you one if your interested but I have so much work I couldnt do anything until March/April 2009.

Must admit now listening to yours the sound is better than the hornby produced one.

Thanks for that. In saying that I still think Hornby did a great job!
