love your guitar tutorials. and you look like dane cook (that's a compliment, lol) hopefully when i get a guitar for christmas i'll learn one of these songs!
Sure, I do as well. That's not what I saying. When your first learning to make chords you have to make sure that your left hand is in a good poistion so that you can make your chords cleanly with all the strings ringing. I am just saying that beginners should be aware that you don't always put your thumb over the neck. for example- you would find it hard to make bar chords if you wrap your thumb over top.
I wouldn't recommend wrapping your thumb around the neck to mute the 6th string. Just let your 3rd finger mute the 6th string by letting it slightly touch it as you make the chord. Also you want to develop and accurate strum so you should be able to strum the without muting. However the rule of thumb, no pun intended) is whatever works for you. For people just learning to play you need to curve your fingers when you make chords so be careful that wrapping your thumb doesn't become a habit.

I wrap my thumb around the neck to play the bass line on the top string. Some of the best players in the world do.....like Eric Clapton!
