Patrick Henry was strongly religious, as was George Mason, as was John Jay, as was Samuel Adams, and as were the majority of the Founders and Framers. Focusing on a few high profile exceptions (all of whom were still strongly faithful in the Christian God, if not regular churchgoers) is a dishonest tactic for anti-theists and humanists to use.
Adams was devoutly religious; he might have rejected some aspects of orthodox christianity but he spoke much of God and prayed nightly. Also he misrepresents Washington's views.
I suspect that a large segment of America are not actual Christians. They attend church rarely and of those that do, 6+1/2 days of the week they don't base their actions of what the Bible says. If asked, they will say they are Christians, but other "Christians" upon observing them in their everyday lives, wouldn't consider their actions "Christian".

I hear all kinds of definitions for what makes someone a christian, but self-styled christians not only fail live up to their own standards, their faith makes them worse examples of decent humanity. In my experience, the most "faithful" are the most illogical, insensitive, and anti-social of their ilk. The moderate christians are only marginally better, still swallowing the garbage of charlatans past.
Very interesting that the religiosity of our nation that exploded across politics in the 19th century was quite democratic, working its way up from the bottom to the top. But did the grass roots strangle our republic? How different would Jefferson's America of Unitarians and sceptics look from the quite predominantly Christian direction it took?

Rousseau thought man was, in the state of nature, fundamentally good; it was only after joining civilized society he was corrupted. This is why, in France, you get a kind of mob rule ending in despotism. @LambLion777 Jefferson thought that being a good person was being a 'true Christian'. He rejected the deity of Christ - outright. Jesus Christ is not God. You can't be anymore 'non-Christian' in the true doctrinal sense of the word than that. Imagine had he lived after Darwin what he would have thought. He loved science and the approach of scientific truth. These men had no other explanation for existence, yet still used their faculties of reason to reject the claims of the faithful.

He points out that the Founding Fathers who thought religion would fade away forgot to take into consideration the wishes of the American people. That's where evangelicals came into play, not only in the US, but also in Britain. Just because some of the Founding Fathers were indifferent doesn't mean the people themselves were. That's the point he is making in this short clip.
Dr. Wood isn't condemning religion at all. I've read his works and he takes pains to point out all aspects of religion in the early American period. What he is saying is that the Founding Fathers were mostly indifferent to religion. They did put in the freedom of religion which is a wonderful part of our constitution and was a very radical thing to do in that time period.
What he is pointing out is that those Founding Fathers who thought that religion would fade away ended up being wrong!

Patrick Henry was strongly religious, as was George Mason, as was John Jay, as was Samuel Adams, and as were the majority of the Founders and Framers. Focusing on a few high profile exceptions (all of whom were still strongly faithful in the Christian God, if not regular churchgoers) is a dishonest tactic for anti-theists and humanists to use.

I suspect that a large segment of America are not actual Christians. They attend church rarely and of those that do, 6+1/2 days of the week they don't base their actions of what the Bible says. If asked, they will say they are Christians, but other "Christians" upon observing them in their everyday lives, wouldn't consider their actions "Christian".

In any case, I think that they saw the political value of having a religious nation (all of them being students of Rome), but didn't want religion to infect the state to the point where it would subvert justice (for example, stoning "witches" to death).

Rousseau thought man was, in the state of nature, fundamentally good; it was only after joining civilized society he was corrupted. This is why, in France, you get a kind of mob rule ending in despotism. The American system was far more distrusting of human nature, derived both from the classical tragic sense and the Christian conception of fallen man (e.g. checks and balances).

The story of the founding of America is quite a tragic one when you think about it. The fathers we absolute visionaries of their time. However the people they served were not. They gave the great gift of the democratic ideal to the people, but the idea was perverted by the people's primitive beliefs. Because they believed so strongly in the idea of personal freedoms and privacy, they had no choice but to allow the people their delusions. When the founders died, their true vision died with them.

I'm not sure the person is fully understands the question. He's confusing "religion" with "Judeo-Christian thoughts." (which is the question asked). This could be due to academics inability to separate "Judeo-Christian thoughts" from "religion." However, if someone wants to be fully informed they should watch some Wallbuilders videos. Search for Wallbuilders or David Barton. This country was not founded on religion, but Judeo-Christian thoughts are everywhere in the Declaration & Constitution.

Then ask for scientific proof about reality from a globally recognized scientist.

@LambLion777 Jefferson thought that being a good person was being a 'true Christian'. He rejected the deity of Christ - outright. Jesus Christ is not God. You can't be anymore 'non-Christian' in the true doctrinal sense of the word than that. Imagine had he lived after Darwin what he would have thought. He loved science and the approach of scientific truth. These men had no other explanation for existence, yet still used their faculties of reason to reject the claims of the faithful.

I find it sad, when you know that people have been lie to about their own American Heritage. In 1948 just after WW2, the Supreme Court had to rule on 1 person in the State of Illinois vs. McCullom case. In which, Judge Black shared with the Court that Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Dansbury letter about the wall of separation. If read it clearly says, that the Baptist Church was in countering a problem between the Government invading what the Church preaches. Read it, for yourself!

That's where evangelicals came into play, not only in the US, but also in Britain. Just because some of the Founding Fathers were indifferent doesn't mean the people themselves were. Dr. Wood isn't condemning religion at all. I've read his works and he takes pains to point out all aspects of religion in the early American period. What he is saying is that the Founding Fathers were mostly indifferent to religion. They did put in the freedom of religion which is a wonderful part of our constitution and was a very radical thing to do in that time period.
What he is pointing out is that those Founding Fathers who thought that religion would fade away ended up being wrong!

@Chuichupachichi they WERE religious, in their own way. . .just that a lot of them weren't Christian, is all.
there are other ways and faiths, y'know.

We're to believe that a population that was "terribly" religious, "very" religious, commissioned the small handful of the only non religious men from amongst them to found a "REPRESENTATIVE" form of government??? WOW, that would imply that his co non-religiously like minded founders, were men who lied to themselves or were not very bright in their delusion of that they were actually representing the people.

@Chuichupachichi some were intensely religious, even 'Christian'. when they met to revise the Articles of Confederation, our FIRST Constitution, they said "Screw it", locked the doors and windows and hammered out the present Constitution without anyone's basic permission. it came out after adoption and being submitted to each of the state legislatures; that's when the Federalist/anti-Federalist papers were published to to the population at large, and they became informed.

It is seen to it that the Professor lives very comfortably as long as he make you into that for which the Constitution is wholly inadequate.
