Me thinks this band may be taking themselves FAR too seriously. lol The concept of a Lucifer is as far fetched as that of a Jonah in a whale. Perhaps one should pray to a toothpick and see the similar results they would get by praying to a "Lucifer". Somewhat creative vid here though only in parts. Sounds and looks more like a Broadway play than anything of a serious note. Not sure but, Is this song / vid supposed to be scary? I think it to be more funny than anything else it purports to be.
@acomposer4U you are telling me that a band named sleepytime gorilla museum takes itself seriously? and that they actually warship the devil? Its good music, its a better music video than you usually see in today's society,
@VonDelacroix Did you read the "MAY" part of my comment? After seeing an interview with the vocalist, I now realize that he is after a strictly theatrical look, feel, and sound, to the songs and vids. As for the content of the vid and song in question, I give it 3 ( out of 5 ) respectively. Not bad, not great.
@acomposer4U I was being somewhat sarcastic, somewhat serious, hard to convey emotion over text. and I will say the song that comes after this song is way better, but how can any song contend with the donkey headed adversary of humanity? but this song and video is still leaps and bounds ahead of most music made today.
I fucking adore the range of his singing voice and it sounds awesome. And the composition is just very SGM. :D Weird and unsettling, maybe but they are amazing.
@TheJustinJennings You may not like it, and that's fine. But saying that Nils sounds like "he got raped etc..." is just plain ridiculous. I'm a singer, baritone bass, and some of the low notes he pulls out, especially the one at 2:03, are damn hard. And even I who have got a deep voice can't reach that damn note.
saw these guys in Eugene, OR in 2009 with Faun Fables, what a great show! i recorded the whole thing but i was too close to the stage and the sound was distorted. sad days for that.
This is just on a whole new level. It's like music, and a movie with a fucked up twist plot, and a book, and a poem and a painting and so many other things... all at the same time. It's just simply brilliant.
I favorited the video but put dislike because logically your not supposed to like it but you are supposed to think it is good job and is worthy of being payed for financially or something which it is I just put dislike because it's like you know adams family or something where it is like hey your grusome and dispicable.. and then they say stuff like thank you..
I think this band is great, from what i understand they are playing a few more shows and calling it quits as well so get out there and see them if you haven't.
I remember when people used to argue over the lyrical themes of this song when it first came out on this very same page then I realized I had just turned 20 back then. I feel old.
"The Morning Star ceremony was a ritual sacrifice of a young girl in the spring. It was connected to the Creation story, in which the mating of the male Morning Star with the female Evening Star created the first human being, a girl."
Now at the end he does say "I am the Advisary"
Satan is a part in a story called job. He is the advisary the antagonist. He represents the trials we have in life that test our faith in god.
@Jimborocknroll90 I think the message is pretty clear here, its about how institutionalized/enforced/mandated religion is just another of the devil's tools.
I heard a sound sample from doom, what the hell? this is goat rock at its finest. sounds like the crash test dummies meets bjork with ween playing in the background as well as classical. I don't know about this.
@dorandraco you kidding? no, i know this band very well... the point is, they're not rock. if you listen enough and know contemporary classical music well enough you may realize that... it's hard to understand, but once you do understand you'll see what a misnomer "experimental rock" is. It's far from rock or metal or anything of that nature
@lurxtlifeson After re-listening with that in mind, I see what you mean. But they absolutely have rock influences, at the least in instruments and general "feel", and occasionally in the actual melodic structure (e.g.: "Cockroach"; rhythmic chords after the vocals in "Ambugaton"). It has enough of an influence on their aesthetic that it's not completely erroneous to call them rock, though. From what the Internet tells me of contemporary classical, they're both nigh-uselessly broad terms, anyway.
@dorandraco I don't quite understand what you mean by that last part, but no, the closest thing to rock they can be compared to is post rock, and I think that's where you're getting confused. Post Rock is music played using rock instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard ect.) but it's not rock. Their music is (self-proclaimed) "Rock against Rock" which really threw me when I first started listening, but now I understand... and if you listen carefully, when they DO sound like a metal band...
@dorandraco they don't use any techniques used in metal. The guitars are not heavily distorted, I have never noticed ANY use of double bass (though I may have missed an occasion, the fact remains that it's extremely rare), the vocals are quite different than anything I've ever heard, yet it still is "heavy" and "headbangable" (kind of...) Just don't think of it as metal or rock because it's really not... watch some interviews with Nils or look into some of their other projects... it will help
@lurxtlifeson I agree, but I didn't express myself well. They are not, strictly speaking, rock or metal. My point is that, as you yourself acknowledged, they sometimes SOUND like metal or rock, and they are "heavy"; their songs often have a bit of a rock/metal "feel", so it's easy to see why someone would describe them as either genre, even if they don't fit either. As for the last bit of my previous comment, I meant that "rock" is such a broad genre that it is barely useful as a specific ...
... term, and that, from my brief research on what exactly is meant by "contemporary classical music", it seems that contemporary classical is similarly broad and ambiguous. So it's natural to want to be more specific with either by comparing to other genres in terms of the "feel" of the music.
@dorandraco There isn't really a category that these guys fit in... that's the beauty. And by contemporary classical music, I mean exactly that, not neo-classical. It's what Bartok, Ligeti, Cowell, and similar composers fall into.
I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be satire. People take any type of religious stuff way too serious. I mean they show a mutant/demon baby singing along for christ's sake, no pun intended.
My friend told me to look this up...And honestly this is the weirdest thing i might have ever seen...I cant stopp laughing but im also kind of scared D=
The song is fuckin ace but the video.. it's amateurish, and quite honestly bad, not due to the strangeness but the execution of it fails; still, the symbolism is quite evident so at least thumbs-up for that. I'll stick to the song though, tyvm!
some of the imagery in here is really interesting and extremely unsettling... but then there were a few things that really took me out of it and were kind of hilarious, like the drooling guy in blackface. all in all i was kinda surprised by how original the direction was, even if the subject itself is a bit cliche. good show guys.
p.s. A+++ for incorporating the word 'sleepytime' into your metal band name
A middle-aged codger's take on this: I have two of the band's albums, but not this 2nd one yet. I love the music in this, but I'm finding the images a little cliched. Maybe that was intentional? Showing religion as evil has been done to death. Maybe they are mocking the cliches? You can never really tell with this band. I just go with the flow and I think that may be the real intent.
I have been reading the coments of both of you guys. I didnt know there was such thing as hating technology, interesting philosphy to digest, I would be pleased to listen more about it. I find it really interesting because it is exactly the contrary to what i believe, i love technology and i prefer humans to be a more complex race... But my mind is wide open to new ways of thinking :). Than you. By the way I love this song and I do beileve in God.
You're welcome... colloquy or soliloquy which ever you choose friend... although sometimes it feels like I'm talking to my self on the web... LOL At least we are having a real discussion and not a shouting match...
These guys are great showmen/women, they have merely painted a grotesquely humorous picture... they don't espouse truth. None of their back story has any concrete corroboration... if there is... show it to me... because I have yet to find it... It's a very cleaver "anti-gimmick"... Ha! I coined a phrase... feel free to use it...
Artists create synthetic realities, it's what they do and they can be interpreted in many ways. They have created a persona and a story to go along with it... I believe there is a massive tongue in the proverbial cheek when it comes to their music... It's not meant to be taken literally...Have you listened to the tones and chords they use, it's hilarious!
They have discussed in interviews some of their lyrics. Their music is not as related to the lyrics as you might believe. The messages are too blatant to be any hint of mockery or pointed irony. Sadly, i have no life so I know exactly what philosophies they are conveying (ironically or literally) and what those views mean.
Though, thanks for being the only person here who hasnt verbally attacked me or my views and actually discusses their perceptions.
To anyone who doesnt get this, they are mocking christianity (notably their hymns) and leading into their support of the digression of humanity, symbolically showing support for "the Donkey headed Adversary of Humanity" It is about as anti-progressive as you can get. Basically, a bunch of misanthropic bullshit saying we need to go back to being godless, purposeless, pointless animals. Which is the entire message of this album. Though, i dont think they would use those words
I wouldn't take them SO seriously friend... I believe they are jesting within their sarcastic wit... let's face it! The world is a mess and we are destroying it! They are only making a humorous, sardonic commentary about the nature of humankind's animalistic behavior...
Irminstan, if you listen to the entire album, they arent jesting, and they agree with the "mathematician" who was actually terrorist, he was highly "subjectivist" and he had a great hatred (much like what Walden discusses) for technology and the advancement of humanity. They make direct references to the above.
Just because they use a theme, idea or philosophy in their music doesn't mean that they are necessarily communicating a "reality" to you, the listener...
You know nothing of religion apparently... however, i said nothing of the loss of religion making us animals. SGM believe we need to abandon technology and progress, as well as God (not religion specifically), and go back to being a "simpler race", championing the idea of nature destroying all that we have and are as humans. I pointed out in my response to Irminstan several more specific points. Next time, think before you speak.
You nothing of it, as much is apparent since you so boldly make that statement without backing yourself up. Could i not say "Atheists are a plague" and you would just dismiss me no matter what i said. I could tell you why God exists and the purpose of religion, but im not going to bother with you, especially on a comment list
...whaaat?

A middle-aged codger's take on this: I have two of the band's albums, but not this 2nd one yet. I love the music in this, but I'm finding the images a little cliched. Maybe that was intentional? Showing religion as evil has been done to death. Maybe they are mocking the cliches? You can never really tell with this band. I just go with the flow and I think that may be the real intent.

@wardka They are using cliche in a very ironic way but also this song is very much about Thelema .

I've listened to this album repeatedly and I listen to it nearly every other day... it happens to be one of my favorite albums, by the way!

Skoojoo 2 years ago
I wouldn't take them SO seriously friend... I believe they are jesting within their sarcastic wit... let's face it! The world is a mess and we are destroying it! They are only making a humorous, sardonic commentary about the nature of humankind's animalistic behavior...
Irminstan 2 years ago
Irminstan, if you listen to the entire album, they arent jesting, and they agree with the "mathematician" who was actually terrorist, he was highly "subjectivist" and he had a great hatred (much like what Walden discusses) for technology and the advancement of humanity. They make direct references to the above.

Just because they use a theme, idea or philosophy in their music doesn't mean that they are necessarily communicating a "reality" to you, the listener...

By pulling off the restraints of religion we would be animals?
I don't think so.
Fucking religious scum.
colorblindvids 2 years ago
You know nothing of religion apparently... however, i said nothing of the loss of religion making us animals. SGM believe we need to abandon technology and progress, as well as God (not religion specifically), and go back to being a "simpler race", championing the idea of nature destroying all that we have and are as humans. I pointed out in my response to Irminstan several more specific points. Next time, think before you speak.

Religion is a plague.
We are MUCH better off without it.
colorblindvids 2 years ago
You nothing of it, as much is apparent since you so boldly make that statement without backing yourself up. Could i not say "Atheists are a plague" and you would just dismiss me no matter what i said. I could tell you why God exists and the purpose of religion, but im not going to bother with you, especially on a comment list
