The original idea (which I think there was a script even written) for 3 was to have John McClane battling terrorits who take over a cruise ship over Christmas based on a novel called TROUBLESHOOTER. Apparently that script was eventually turned into the script for SPEED 2 (and we all know how great that film is). But why I think this worked so well is that it had a lot more creativity and a more original plot while retaining the DIE HARD feel, without trying to be the first one.
