  • THIS SONG HAS A SPECIAL MEANING FOR ME (WAS NO.1 THE WEEK OF MY 8TH BIRTHDAY)

  • When my dad used to play this it gave me the creeps! :/ it is quite a sad song.

  • @SIXTIESMUSICGUY I'm not too sure of this one, might have to listen to it when I'm not so sleepy, lol xo

  • what a fantastic song.could the likes of jls write this kind of music.I think not.

  • It's amazing, considering he was tone deaf, that Joe Meek was one of the most seminal producers of the post-war era. I really like how he brought out the best of the song and brought the story within to life. This is one of the most beautiful songs of the early 1960's.

  • been singing thi all my life to my uncl johnny love it xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • im 14 and i still think this shit is awsome!

  • @xCaMo97 fuck yeah it's awesome!!! Do you skate by any chance? If you do look up Garrett Hill in Free Your Mind... He uses this song and it goes perfectly. Love that old western galloping feeling.

  • @xCaMo97 Whoops I mean Feel Free! Not free your mind... Look it up.

  • This song was 50 years ago no.9 in the world charts #john #leyton

  • So long as he doesn't forget...

  • This is brilliantly produced. Joe Meek was undoubtedly one of the most influential and important music men ever from England. Im sure Phil Spector learnt quite a bit from him.

  • amazing.

  • @skimsurf23

Or, compare the trim attractiveness of those girls with the blubber-arsed slags you hang with.

  • like if you arent some old fart and heard this on moder collective(best surf movie ever)

  • i really likie 'telstar' . Good interpretation. tragic timings...as you will see.....Years ago grafifti in Holloway road was writ large ' Joe Meek Lived Here' with helpful arrow .Late 80's /early nineties.

  • 1st record I ever purchased, got it from Birkbecks in walton on thames 4s 11d still got it, it still bring goose bumps when I hear it who were the backing girls? hope i get a chance to see him in concert

  • @micksymes That's about 29p.

Still remember as a small boy getting half a crown pocket money on Saturday morning!

  • I think you mean "it's so ORDINARY awesome." No need for the word you used.

  • 50 years old this month!

  • I was in Holloway Road, London, recently and noticed number 304, where Joe Meek recorded this classic and other gems in the early 1960s. The Telstar man is marked by a plaque on the wall, appropriately near the satellite dish.

  • and of course the great voice of Lissa Grey...

  • great song a classic

  • This is so cool...

  • one of the all time greats

  • I've just bought 250 business cards.

  • (i am the thousand likes)

  • I've seen John Leyton live - great even now. Joe Meek is a genius with an amazing story.

  • Comment removed

  • wow John Leyton looks ALOT like a good friend of mine, so I always nickname him "Johnny"

by the way, I think he was very cool in The Great Escape and Von Ryan's Express

  • Holy crap wow. Talk about a song ahead of it's time. That's what I love about ballad songs like these from the 50's and 60's... You'll ALWAYS hear something you've never heard before.

  • @wesott11

True - it's a song ahead of it's time when it was released. In fact once i read (somewhere on internet) that the way the guitar was played on this song influenced the use of chords in punk rock. All in all this song is a gem.

  • Unbelievable !

Its the first time im seeing it now i know who was John Leyton

  • 1950s-60s = 1000 legend singers

    2000s = maybe 10 ? :/

  • remember listening to this when i was broke really woke me up

  • First pop record that "did it" for me, I was 11.

  • 50 YEARS AGO THIS AUGUST !

  • Takes me back some years , but still love it.

  • This is coming up on 50 years old. Amazing.

  • @birchward Ritchie Blackmore did NOT play on this record. He did play on many other Meek Productions between 1962 and 1966, but never this one.

  • a GREAT SONG AND PRODUCTION AND IF I REMEBER ( PLEASE EXCUSS THE PUN ) RIGHT ,THE GUITARTIST WAS A 17 YEAR OLD RITCHIE BLACKMOORE ,WHO WAS A SESSION GUITARIST AT THAT TIME , AT JOE MEEKS STUDIO , HIS DAD TOOK HIM DOWN AND ASKED FOR A JOB FOR HIS SON , WHO HE SAID WAS A GOOD GUITARIST ! HOW RIGHT HE WAS !

  • Iron Maiden could do a good cover of this. Harry woud be in his element alloping along on the bass.

  • 13 people are deaf

  • the best song ever. my mates thinkits hilarious that a 12 year old could love john leyton songs :)

  • One of my favorites when I was in high school...the voice of the woman is outstanding - standing out!

  • i used to be terrified of this song when i was a baby.

  • @marky24uk LOLOLOL...esp. that high-pitched woman's part!

  • Check out Meteors version :-) But original is the best of course

  • I Love this song Its a beaufil sad song, I never hear it . Thank you for posting.

  • GARRETT HILL!!!

  • Great song...Sorry but the Meteors did it better though.

  • @hotrodmitch you're an idiot

  • @Shane050391 Bit harsh, was only joking, had to see what reaction I got, excellent comeback, direct and straight to the point! How about Jedwards version?

  • Heeyaahh!

  • いやあ、なつかしい! まさか動画まで残っているとは感激! いま聞いても新鮮ですねえ。このリズム感、馬が走っているような爽快さを思わせます。

  • ice cold song cooooooooooooooooll

  • 1961? Hm-m...Does it not sounds like a "clone"

"(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend" is a country and cowboy-style song. It was written on June 5, 1948 by Stan Jones.[1] A number of versions were crossover hits on the pop charts in 1949. The ASCAP database lists the song as "Riders in the Sky" (title code: 480028324[2]), but the title has been written as "Ghost Riders", "Ghost Riders in the Sky",

  • @madrussian1000 good point. it is similar to ghost riders in the sky with different lyrics

  • @donkiddick08 would it be wrong to call it a P-word?(plagiat...)

  • @madrussian1000 well, when you consider that george harrison got found guilty of plagiarising he's so fine on my sweet lord, plagiarism is clearly tricky to determine because i can't really see any similarity between those two. so, if two tunes which don't sound alike represent plagiarism then, the opposite must also be true. who knows?

  • 1:16 and so: that's what i call a musical arrangement .. pure Meek's geniality

  • this song gives me a chill down my spine

  • its just so fucking awesome!

  • Fantastic song, love it!!

  • The soundtrack to a blustery autumn sunday, when the weather's so rough you daren't venture out and just stay in to prepare a roast dinner instead.

  • I remember this song from when I was a kid. My aunt bought the record.. I lived in Battersea then. I now live in Islington and work in Holloway Road. Every day on the bus to and frrom work I pass the flat where Joe Meek lived. There is a plaque on the wall above a supermarket telling us he lived there. Also, an old ffriend of mine was in a band iwith Riod Stewart and they were to perform the track Telstar but Joe found a more attractive group called The Tornados and they took it to number one!

  • Absolutely love this song my nan got me into the 60s. I love story songs they have more of a meaning.

  • nice song..it gives me chill but i love it

  • always remember your condom (johnny)

  • Wow, still a brilliant and original sound 50 years on! I have always said this would go back to Number 1 if re-released.

@TheDavidjoy, yes, you're right, we saw him on Harper's Bazaar or Harper's West One - a magazine setting or something. It was the very first pop song I really liked, just so magical. I'm sure the clip is from the programme.

After that it was all under the covers every night with Luxembourg, and I think this stayed at No1 for about 11 weeks.

    Biggles springs to mind too!

  • this somewhat haunting melody always sends a chill down my spine thanks

  • This was a song from I think a BBC play of the week in the 60's. As soon as I heard John sing this I knew he would have a smash hit if released. It was and he did.. The play centred around a singer, no really! and trying to make the big time. I I cannot remember a lot but I guess the tape of the play was wiped as so much was in the 60's. So history lost again. At least there is this clip. Is it from the play?

  • You can call it an usual song,i call this a masterpiece!

Oldies but goldies, deserve more respect, and much more views!

  • i was born several years later :(

  • it was good to see him with charles bronson when they escaped the movie the great escape

  • Magical western theme music. Why not? its working. In that past time it was progress staff.

  • Gerrett Hill - feel free part

  • 0:34 Lol! Those 3 dark haired girls look just like my Mum! She was a teenager back then, and my Dad's a major Elvis fan.

  • Fucking excellent tune, have it as my ringtone!

  • FANTASTIC EXAMPLE OF THE BRILLIANT JOE MEEK RECORDING ON A SHOESTRING TECHNIQUE==A GREAT CLASSIC = ALONG WITH WILD WIND == WHY DONT WE SEE ORIGINALITY LIKE THIS THESE DAYS???

  • classic just ...classic

  • Lucky bastard could have had anyone of those women, and probably did !

  • Watch the meteors cover, just as great, different paces.

  • I'm ten years old again.

  • @349quinman

    I was 8. Lol.

  • just so good.

  • Joe Meek. What a genius. One of the rare clips of film from his attic flat cum studio where for a brief point in time he held the record companies at bay. 5 years later his landlady ,him and a young lad lay dead.Tragic story if you get a chance wiki it Good singing by John Leyton too.

  • @allegroboy0 Don't think there was a young lad who lay dead - he witnessed it, according to the recent biopic "Telstar".

  • @allegroboy0 , actually patrick pink his assistant wasn't killed, he witnessed the shootings at 304 holloway road, Joe's paranoia finally got the better of him on feb 3rd 1967, on the 8th anniversary of buddy hollys death, patrick endured hours of questioning by hornsey police statioin, Joe left the studio and all his music and machines to patrick, penniless and broke he had to realise all of the assests to the debt collectors, he later got a job as a driver on the piccadilly line.

  • @allegroboy0 : Just imagine: Today's technology and his vision would be a killer combination.

  • thought it was only me that loved this must be getin old aww love it was only 7 when i played it xx

  • I remember him from the 1964 movie "633 Squadron", I never knew he was a Singer.

  • if u love this...u'll love the cover by The Meteors...

    love it

  • just so beautiful...

  • Love it - just popped to the top of the brain so I looked it up!

  • 詠一・・・やっちまったな~

  • ...and if you like this you will love john's "wild wind" that has an even spookier sound..both great 60s classics

  • YAY !!! JOHN LEYTON ROCKS AND ROLLS !

  • A great moment from pop history. Just as good today as 1961.

  • Oh God.........what a gorgeous blast from the past. Love all of Joe Meek's records. Only 11 then but remember having a crush on John Leyton.

  • I can see Johny Leyton (John Lennon v Johnny Rotten) singing Rawhide by Frankie Laine or They Called the Wind Maria ..

  • Good song reminds me of Last Date by Frank J Wilson. I particular like the backup singers enticing Johnny to join her/them ..has that rawhide feel and in a way like Last Kiss by Frank J Wilson.

  • @11xzxzxz this is stuff that was going on in england before the beatles

  • @spacepatrolman Sure I know that from the watching the video and it has that early sixties sound and lyrics. I would guess Johny's music and dress influenced the Beatles or at least Brian Epstein. Also I can see Morrissey or The Smiths being influence by this.

  • Is the clip from the TV series "Harper's West One"?

  • great joe meek behind the desk...

  • Love this song!!!

  • Great song. Haunting. Takes my mind back to school summer holidays with mates.
