People have mixed since thousands of years. The swedish culture of today is the result of much mixing. Not only with the neigbourg countries. Both the vikings and kings in the 18:th century had a lot of contact with for instance Turkey.

Hi THordasson, there's a famous saying (I can't remember who from): "No man is an island". The same is true for countries (even Britain where I'm from) in the sense that interaction with other nations is inevitable. In the UK for example even "whites" are a mongrel mix of Celts, Picts, Anglo-Saxons... and Vikings! There's nothing wrong with distinctive national characteristics- I loved Sweden- but to deny others to play a part in our nations' histories is (in my opinion) wrong.

During the medieval we were fascinated by german culture, during the renaissance we were fascinated by the french culture it wasn't until the 19th century (18th by swedish measurement) the swedes created any kind of patriotism. The patriotism sadly evolved into racism among the lower educated part of the population during the late 1980's. So the biggest part of swedish history has actually been multi-cultural.
