i've seen this movie long time ago, when i was 5 years old about. i didn't know it's name, i just remembered the part that it was sunny and the girl was watching someone dancing, i finally found this movie, i'm glad =)
I wasnt too keen on the comedy side of it, but the romantic side was just pure magic. No matter how many times i see it, it never loses its passion. Recommend to anyone for a magical movie night =)
55-year old, exceedingly straight, married, former football playing (the US version), retired American naval officer, and I first saw this film back in the mid-90s on, of all things, a US Navy warship. It was one of the first with women in the crew and the ladies got to pick the video being shown that night. I was blown away. It has everything; class warfare, hot chicks, Python-esque arguments, abuse & silly walks, & people speaking a foreign language — Australian! Brilliant!
@BusinessDog2000 HOLLYWOOD could NEVER reproduce this kind of once in a lifetime magic. thats what I love about aussie cinema; their unabashed joy their unappolegtic abandon! theyre like american cinema was in the 1940's
@comactortony Wow you are really sold on this film huh? I got a little tired of the continuous add placement my coca cola, the repetitive lines ("I wanna dance with Fran!", "I want to dance with you!"), he unclarity of the relationships, the cheap unfunny humor (punching fran as Liz walks by her..), and the lack of importance the plot held. THe build-up was so small and the results were even smaller. Poor film.
@thespecter2 in an interview BAZ L said that Strictly B was one part of a trilogy. Romeo & Juliet and Mulon Rouge where the others. The trilogy was an homage to 3 aspects of the performing arts SB was dance, MR was music & R&J was the spoken word/literature. in all three he uses 'pop' music and all 3 are full of 'iconic' images of 'pop culture' like coke signs or the 7-up commercial visuals in the 'Absenthe' scene in MR. so there was a pupose to the coke sign.
@thespecter2 AND FURTHER MORE... Remember the billiant twist HITCHCOCK used in PSYCHO? Janet Leigh was billed as the STAR! Then gets hacked up in the shower only 10 minutes into the film. So like Psycho, SB is not 'really' about the "glittering world' Ballroom dance...ITS FRANS MOVIE! She is ridiculed, knocked around, used & abused and emerges like the Ugly Duckling into a SWAN!
@comactortony The concepts and idea of the movie are not bad, although I imagine I am a little negatively biased towards dancing films. Fran was my favorite character. It is kind of cool how she pushes Liz Holtz completely out of the main plot.
@BusinessDog2000 As "comactortony" said, Hollywood could never make this kind of movie, nor remake this better...its already brilliant. Stop trying to remove life's variation, do you honestly wonna make everything the same?
@Footrockofdoom I think you missed my sarcasm. They've already got their hands on Footloose and now Dirty Dancing. It wont be surprising if another studio snags this one to get in on the new "dance movie" remake bandwagon (which is really annoying already)
@MsHannahHappyface sry, i now ur comment is from a while back, but i felt like responding. and no, they mean its not stictly ballroom. means they r in love and not rilly that strict on stage. does that make sence?
i just found out that this movie is part of a trilogy called the red curtain trilogy. the other two installments directed also by baz luhrmann is moulin rouge and romeo + juliet, all really cool movies.
I LOVE this film. Baz Luhrmann is a genious, all his movies are fantastic!!! I always stay with the doubt as how he would have done his version of the life of Alexander the Great, and the musical Wicked.
Were watching this in english right now(:

The guy that plays Scott is so hot in this movie because he has a dancer's body. I wish he hadn't bulked up for Exit to Eden.
