  • Comment removed

  • i've played this as well :3 fun song. ~flute player~

  • hahaha love the chair, LOL

  • and yes, i do know that it is a contra bass

  • that is a big bass

  • thumbs up for bass clarinet!

  • Does a Contra Bass and Contra Alto have the same reed size?

  • @12Xenna they play on the same reeds

  • I WAS THERE!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • oh my god.. isnt this variants on a nautical hymn??

  • I PLAY THAT!!!!!!!!

  • Haha my friends came to see me play contrabass, and they were like "We had no trouble finding you."

My director has me on a stool so when sitting I am close to 6 foot. Funn.

I love your name for it! :D

  • what a perfect name for that instrument :O

  • to be honest it sounded rlly good toward the end like it was rlly pretty

  • does your band have an Eb sopranino clarinet?

  • what song is this, it sounds so familiar, i think i've played it but i cant out my finger on it

  • wicked, I remember playing this at our band festival last year, it was pretty awesome! there way 3-4 other schools that showed up and a total of like 500 kids, it turned out pretty good.

  • wow you have to sit on a stool just to reach the mouthpiece

  • I can actually hear you!! and you normally dont hear the bass clari. i play clarinet but i never knew there was a contrabass clarinet

  • holy shit. im having second thoughts about this instrument... i play bass clarinet. is the contrabass clarinet funner? all i know is, its big and low with a capital L.

  • OMG I miss playing my Contra! I played the same exact style Contra you're playing in the video. I loved that thing! My 2 favorite songs to play on that were Sleigh Ride and Incidental Suite, Tarantella and Nocturne, those 2 movements had the BEST Contra parts. I played another song in highschool but I can't remember the name of it, there was a solo with the first chair Clarinet, the Bass Clarinet and the Contra. It was pretty cool and both of the judges complimented me ;)

  • I applaud your amazingness! I play this instrument too and know the challenge of it.

  • you are an outcast

  • Hey! No way! My contra is nicknamed "The Beast" tooo!!!! I love it:)

  • my Bb bass clarinet and my regular Bb clarinet is called da beasties

  • You played well from what I could hear.. To bad the band always overshadows contrabass players eh? All your brass sitting behind you made a no-no.. They shouldnt've put their instruments down on their laps, even during rests.

  • i know very few girls who can blow haed wnough to play that thing

    other than sluts

  • OMG i just played this!!

  • I would of named it Big Bertha.

  • My dad's contrabass clarinet is a lot better than the plastic one. He has a metal one.

  • I bet everyone looked at you with that big beast the entire song!

  • I remember playingthis tune in High School. What is the name of this piece?

  • It's "The Light Eternal" by James Swearengen.

    I love that contrabass clarinet!

  • I want to play that beast of a horn. My school doesn't have one unfortunately.

  • The Light Eternal Good Song

  • i get to play one of those this year

  • Damn that thing is big!

  • That's funny how you tower over everybody else

  • that looks alot like me playing contra in my band except im a boy...sitting on a high stool...brings back memories

  • Is that a Bb contra, last time I saw one, it was much smaller.

  • i named mine RAMBO.and people say my contrabass clarinet is on steroids

  • mine was dropped by the person before me

and it snapped in the middle it took 700 bucks to fix, lol the anti-obishure you need on low notes

  • holy crap same exact thing happened to me!! ;)

  • is the contrabass clarinet lower than the tuba

  • i call mine gigantor

  • I wonder what people think when they see that thing:)

    I'd love to play this,too

  • is this a festival??

  • OMG! "The Beast!" How appropriate! I played it throughout high school and in college wind ensemble, but was lucky enough to play the "paperclip" style horn! (so I didn't have to sit on a "throne"!) LOVE THIS!

  • that thing looks like it's on steriods

  • i have a question, why would u be playing that in a high school, or middle school band??? that thing would throw off the balance of the bass section lol

  • Don't be absurd. Contrabass claris are very important, especially in Alfred Reed's band music.

  • you have quite a lofty perch up there......

careful not to get altitude sickness

  • lol

  • why do you sit on that tower? xD can't you get contrabass clarinets in that shape, but where you can sit normal?

  • We have a Bass Tuba in our band named Big Bertha, its funny because the shortest person in band plays it.

But i always wanted to play contra. normal clarinet isnt cool enough. so are the keys the same as the regular?

  • the fingerings are the same but the bass, contrabass, and octobass (look at google images) can go to low Eb below the staff.

  • no. all keys on any bass/alto/contra bass/contra alto are covered already so you dont have to physically cover them

  • ha ha ha! you tower over everyone around you!

  • For those who think it's lame that Contrabass doesn't get written in bass clef, it's because the whole clarinet famil is written in treble. Why mess up the score? Also, pretty sick song being played here!

  • wow, i didn't know it was in treble clef, i figured it would be in bass clef, i'm i luck theN!

  • Yeah, every woodwind instrument of every pitch (EXCEPT BASSOON) is writted in treble. That way you could go from say, a soprano Bb clari to a bass clari with no trouble.

  • yeah, i went from Bb clarinet to a bass clarinet no prob, so i guess i'm in luck for when i eventually get a contra bass in college. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! (sorry, i hade way to musch coffee this morning and really hyper)

  • I'm surprised the whole audience didn't crap their pants.

(It's a joke from South Park where they think they can play a low note that craps everyone's pants)

  • does the contrabass play in bass clef?

  • Nope. Treble clef

  • that's pretty stupid. i play bassoon and trombone and they are in bass clef but the contrabass clarinet is lower pitched than both of them. doesn't make any sense at all to me. same with the Bari sax

  • that is bc the contra bass clarinet can play both lower than a trombone and in the range of a normal clarinet , making it stupid to put it in the bass clef bc you would be reading wwaayy above the staff

  • its pretty simple to keep it in treble because thats what all clarinets are in and thats what all clarinet players start on

  • i guess you're right but still, in my opinion, it should be written the way it is pitched.

  • Yea, pitched for treble. Tell me one instrument written in Bflat that is written in treble.

  • R u serious?

u might want to reword your comment

  • tenir/soprano/soprillo sax. alll are written in Bb. plus the bass/Bb contrbass/Bb tubax are also written in Bb.

  • @justinartcore written in treble clef but sounds two octaves lower than written. The bass clarinet sounds one octave lower than written.

  • @wvwoodman Wrong.....sounds more than two octaves below....if we were talking about a Bb soprano Clarinet then yes....other than that you Sir are wrong.... look it up please

  • @Intelligentia100 - I Did look it up - and it sounds 2 octaves and an major second - it you want to technical about it. But I was ignoring the the basic transposition for a Bb instrument. And you are right I should have said 2 octave below the normal clarinet.

  • the light eternal man!!

  • someone stand out at the auditions for districts....

  • Haha! lol! Yes! =) And proud of it!

  • NICENESS, i play one as well in my band,,,,,it;s aptly named the Überclarinet of death!!!

  • i soo want one!

im sorry but regular clarinet is just too plain for me! so is bass clarinet.

  • and that IS a Bb correct?

  • mine is named shelby

  • cool, i named mine mammoth xD

  • It's extremely great that you, as a young female, love big, low aerophone instruments. You seem to be musically authoritative when you play one. Pass on the sentiments to other young females.

  • Splediforous plays bass and contrabass, and i have played bass for 3 years and am now switching to contrabass. i like big, low aerophone instruments

    =D

  • It's extremely great that you, as a young female, love big, low aerophone instruments. You seem to be musically authoritative when you play one. Pass on the sentiments to other young females.

  • we played this song on our last concert

  • LUCKY!

  • yeah but your neck on yours is longer than mine:) haha next time i'll bring it out && show the world just what Jennifer can do. haha

  • Hehe! I can not wait to see! I would love to see your dear Jennifer!

  • i remember playing this song. I HATED IT!! LOL :^)

  • Gregg! Keep your comments to yourself! You're just jealous because my instrument is bigger than yours and I have a beautiful tenor tone to my voice =p

  • yea your right

  • what key is your contrabass in??

we have 2 at our school... both Bb. and not as lovely as yours. rthey are completely metal, but still amazing. :)

  • was that mr. regan? i have mrs. regan as my french horn teacher.

  • This is actually Mr. Regan. That's awesome you have Mrs. Regan. The Regans are awesome in general =)

  • Yes, I know. They are very good teachers and very nice people.

  • cool

  • what song is this?

  • the song is 'The Light Eternal'

  • overall posture of the band sucks sorry first thing i noticed

  • Don't worry. I know. This is what you get when you're school is one of the top 100 schools in America for music. Sure, we play great but they don't teach us good posture.

  • That is one beefybass right there.

  • That is so cool "Fo Real"

  • i plat the regular clarinet

  • LOL... I love Contrabass players... they are so lucky... but in the band I'm in we only have Contra Alto's... which is what I'm currently playing, but I may switch to the bari sax... again. =D

  • 2 bad we cant hear u till 1:30

but then we hear u from then on

    :) contra is awesome

  • Sweet. Mine was dubbed simply as "The Plumbing", or "The Contra". Which, imo, was better than "The Farting Bedpost". :p

I always played standing up at concerts though. Stupi uniform skirts, wouldn't let me sit on the stool with it.

Where were you playing? That looks incredibly like the stage at my old high school...

  • This was at Monroe Woodbury High School in New York :-)

  • this was great but the guy playing the baritone horn behind you had horrible posture, he is supposed to lift the baritone up not slink down to its level

    good playing though

  • My contra was named "Beast" too! Oh how I miss him, he was a silver one. It's been 18 years since I've played one... I LOVED being the Girl on the Stool!

  • Contrabass's must be named.

    Ours is simply "Bertha".

  • That's amazing! I named my Contrabass Clarinet the Beast because all my friends we're like "Look! It's Beauty and the Beast!" :-)

  • The great thing about playing Contra is, you sit on a stool/really high chair, and everyone sees you. xD

  • ive been to wherever this is. i recognize the stage also. maybe MICA

  • Awesome .. i am also playing the contrabas clarinet ... its a pain to get on the stool .... every time i move on it, it squeaks. its an amazing instrument ..... where was this concert held .. because the stage looks very familiar .. was it at a music competition called Mica?

  • Awesomeeeeeee....I was supposed to play contrabass in my school's top ensemble, but there was an order mixup and we got a new bass instead of a contrabass, so now I'm just playing my gonna be alternating between my bass (his name is Billy), contraalto, and Bb for the concert XD on top of playing trumpet (Bosco) in the Jazz and beginner ensemble...

  • Hi Joanna!!

  • Nice!!

  • I always hate sitting on the stool when i have to play it...

  • The Light Eternal! I love this piece. :D I've played bass clarinet on this (and first and second standard clarinet), but never contrabass (I played E-flat contralto for a short while, though not on this song).

  • I'm in this video!

  • Where do you live, or where was tha performance cuz I can swear I performed there!

  • haha, are you from co??? i played the contrabass too!

  • Awesome! I play the Contraalto Clarinet and it doesn't stand a chance against the BBb contra.I also play alto and bass clarinet, and all saxes soprano - Bari

  • I'm getting a Selmer Paris Bass Clarinet! Coll, right?

  • Beast! In codittens to my alto!

  • my band director plays contra...but his has a ridiculous bore on it...so we call it the uber-clarinet-of-death.

  • too bad you cant hear it:(

  • The bigger and deeper, the better;):P

  • I totally agree! :)

  • i really want to play a contrabass clarinet

but then again i love bass clarinet

our band director said that we have a peice that has a contrabass part and if we play it that he might rent one

    XD

  • contrabasses are soooo cool, i play one at my high school.

  • the contra clari and sax put sousas to shame

  • haha i agree because i march contra alto!

  • ive heard of it before but ive never seen one cool!

  • Hey that was awesome!! I just started to play contrabass...

  • I love the sound the contra has mixed in with the bass clarinets..really brings a whole new richness to the low woodwinds...I miss playing it...been 15 years since I got to play one..cost as much as a car to buy! LOL

  • lol we all need to sit on a stool! thats a nice contrabass clarinet. the one i use is all silver and its all jacked up! i have to use rubber bands because some of the springs wont work! our school has money to buy new bari saxes and other instruments but we "NEVER" have enough money to buy a new contrabass....you're lucky...i wish our school had a black contrabass carinet...it was fun marching with it though...but yeah keep up the good work.

  • Awesome! You got to march with it?!?! I wanted to do that! But they were like "No it might get damaged" :( That's Awesome!

  • Very nicely done, such a fun instrument to play isn't it? I've never seen a black one before! The one I played in college was Sterling Silver.

  • i know how that is to sit that high in band, i played the same instument in high school. i also called it the beast. lol. i loved playing that.

  • i love it..this made me laugh

  • are you at the alberta band assosiation festival..cuz if so ive been there ^.^

  • thats the light eternal right by swearingin?

  • haha, what a great instrument. So many good times playing that paperclip haha

  • That must be cool to be on a chair higher than everyone else!:P Nice playing! I wanna play contra one day, but I play bass clarinet right now.

  • Holy Moly, That thing defies nature!!!!!

    I want one :P

I dunno about my credibility if I start playing an instrument bigger than me tho' :S

  • Nice job. It must take a lot of wind to play that.

  • Wow! I'd love to play a contrabass clarinet. It looks huge though... I complain enough about having to carry my bass clarinet around all day!

  • Wow. That is like 10 B-flats put together. You have a good sound and so does the band. What brand of clarinet? :)
