I finally saw this film for the first time and as someone doesn't really like sport of any kind I have to say I absolutely loved this, during the end fight I actually had to resist getting on my feet and shouting at the television screen. When Rocky was calling Adrian's name amidst all the chaos I actually welled up, it was a beautiful ending to a film that is now one of my favourites.
@TheMarylandDude EVERYONE thinks Rocky 1 is the best, but people often dismiss Balboa and 2 for being the same thing as the first. So its weird u put Balboa that high and 2 that low ( + 2 is awesome :P)
@IMmephiles This is one of those franchises where the first one is the best, hands down. Yeah, I do see when you mean that #6 and #2 are the same thing, seeing how closely tied the second one is with the first. But the sixth one is just one of the greatest comebacks and has some really good life speeches from Rocky that made it so awesome, IMO.
@IMmephiles My opinion is that 3 had that Hulk Hogan charity match, which was completely pointless but funny as hell, and the fight with Mr. T was hardcore, especially getting trained by Apollo. 4 was just an adrenaline blast from beginning to end with Ivan Drago, who was the perfect follow-up with Mr. T's character.
You know...rocky isn't one of my most watched films, although I do think it a good film. But its only now that the angry video game nerd mentioned it that I realise that Mickey is the same guy who was the penguin in the sixties batman! I thought when I first watched the film the voice sounded familiar, but I put it down to that character just proviing a template for other gravelly voiced, p*ssed off coaches etc to use so I just thought it a generic thing. But now I know...and knowledge is power
@IMmephiles Where do you think I got the expression from? I just didn't think it needed further elaboration as people in the know, like your good self, would just pick up on it anyway and make your own internal shitty jokes. Although, being British, I know the beloved all american hero as an 'international' hero because thats how he was billed over here...but we all knew he was American because he always wanted to blow things up all the time.
Even though I'm only 13. Rocky was a big part of my childhood. My whole familly liked it and when I was really young they were the greatest movies ever to me. And like James said it's just a series YOU HAVE TO SEE
The movie's plot may not be high in depth, but like James said, it doesn't need a great plot. The film works because of its presentation; the performances, the music, the directing, and the writing make everything gel together extremely well. It puts itself out on a limb, and never fails to deliver when it does. That's what often distinguishes first-rate movies from second-rate and third-rate movies.
Just watched this movie the other night. why can't filmmakers get back to this vibe? It's such a good character and story. I grew up in Brooklyn and it looked just like Philly. Believe it or not, I am nostalgic for the rundown glory of those days. Today everything is overpriced and fake. And our cities are turning into hipster shopping malls. It's so great to see the REAL people on the street in this film. REAL neighborhoods where people know each other. Great things come from the street.
@YougoogleY17 Just because YOUR life was miserable back then doesn't mean we all have to stop reminiscing about better days. Quite a few people seem to agree with my comment. What is wrong with YOU that you troll comments to get attention? I see all kinds of comments I don't agree with but I try to contribute in ways that others may relate to personally. I'm not out to annoy and offend for no reason like you are. It's a sign of a negative character. Is that REALLY the way you wish to be seen?
@mindstormsabrewin Living in the "Rust belt" was not glorious 25 years ago. You lived in Brooklyn, so you don't know Pittsburgh has entire towns (like the one I grew up in) built around steel mills that were shut down. Crime was high, jobs were scarce, and it was shitty. We made the best of it, I have some great memories. But you sir, are talking out of your ass.
@YougoogleY17 Yes I know of the towns destroyed by plant closures. Brooklyn was a crime ridden shithole, with large sections of former manufacturing districts that were abandoned. I played in those ruins as a kid. It was home. We come from similar backgrounds. So in what way am I "talking out of my ass"? I seem to have the highest rated comment up here and a lot of people agree with what I said. Again, please tell me what you disagree with. And try it without the insults please.
@mindstormsabrewin Sorry about insulting you. You seem like a good guy. I forgot why I even left that first msg to be honest. Either way, despite having different opinions about the street, I think the both of us can safely agree that rocky kicks ass. Take care my friend.
@reviewreviewer1 It is when the rich colonize working class neighborhoods and drive out people that have been there for generations. Buy up buildings and evict old helpless people and then make those apartments into expensive lofts for yuppies and their hipster kids while their victims die out in the streets. That's blood money and it's what has fueled this so called housing bubble. Greed and selfishness is what's wrong. If someone got rich that way then they have blood on their hands.
Saw the original Rocky for the first time less than a week ago, and it's now my favorite movie of all time. It's gritty, beautiful and inspirational all at once. Just wow...
i really like how he opens this video because that statement is so true. "Rocky is simply one of the best movies ever made but why that is I can't explain it's just something u have to see" i love the rocky series so much & yes even Rocky 5 they were all so inspirational sylvester stallone was pure genius when he made these movies
this movie to me represents everyones personality talents and struggle in lifeto find their place in life simply saying rocky is literaly (feel dumb to state the obvious) one of the greatest most true to life story ever made and im seriously going over board
This is a classic! Whenever I think of an inspirational film, I think of Rocky. I really love everything about this film and remember watching it with my dad years ago. I agree with your review, this is a magical film. I love motivational films like this and Discover the Gift, which I recently saw. I loved discover the gift! Have you heard of it? I would love someone to do a video review for Discover the Gift. bit. ly/lmjrmP
Paulie is almost good enuf to steal the movie from Rocky, but not quite. I luv all his scenes in the movie. And Rocky is just the average chilled out dude you know from around the block in this one. Great flick
@Tristanthejawsfan I've never been to Philadelphia but I don't see what the point is unless someone's training for a bout. i don't care to see sexy women run up those stairs did just now in the last few seconds of this video unless i have the opportunity to engage in sexual activity with them and set them straight on i'm right and they're wrong because i'm a sexually frustrated 32 year old virgin who wants to engage in sexual activity with at least 200 women to make up for lost time.
@Tristanthejawsfan come to think of it, i remember seeing lots of others running up the steps at the end of Rocky 6 during the ending credits. again, unless someone's in shape or has made a huge accomplishment at getting what they want, or for something other just running up the steps showing others that they can run and climb steps, i just don't see what the point is. i wonder if the employees who work there do that all the time in their business suits and business woman outfits!
During the Oscars it was a 3 way battle between Rocky, Taxi Driver & Network but its stupid how Network beats Rocky in Acting and Screenplay but still win Best Picture and Director and I think Burgess Meredith should've won best supporting actor
The original Rocky was the best of the series and the best picture award was very deserved, but im upset that part 2 wasnt even nominated! It was one of the best sequels of all time!
I've heard that this film was inspired by a small time boxer that almost went the distance with Mohammad Ali when he's the champ. For those who don't know, Mohammad Ali was arguable the greatest box champ of all time, he earned the title, got sent to prison for refusing to fight in Vietnam, and then won it back when he got out of jail.
I am 47 and for the past 30+ years I have always said Rocky is truly one of the greatest movies ever made but for the life of me I couldn't really explain why. A wonderful review...you did a great job explaining why.
5:God-Zilla seris (NOT THE ONE Where he looks like a Dinosaur and Gets his butt blown away by Missiles I MEAN DA ONE WHO CAN NEVER DIE AND BREATHS FIRE)
I'm not going to lie. I'm not a "fit" guy who runs mile after mile each day. But a few years back I "often" went out jogging late at night (I prefer jogging when it's dark for some reason). One night maybe around 01:00, in maybe October, I was on my way back (quite close to home) and a drunk guy says "Hey, who does he think he is... Rocky" and started cheering "Rocky" after me. And as a guy who basically started training because of the Rocky movies it was a CLASSIC moment in time! Love that guy!
rocky is, and will always be my #1 favorite movie. and usually im the horror movie guy, but this movie makes me want to tell the horror movies to fuck off! imo it is the best movie ever made.
stallone is one of my heros hes always been there to entertain people hes made some of the most memerable films ever and thats why i dont have to think twice about the expenables.
the only thing I didn't like was how unrealistic the actual boxing was. I know it's a drama, but seeing as how Rocky is centered around the sport, it would have been nice to see some authentic boxing techniques. pretty good movie still.
Okay i really enjoyed this movie but maybe i wasn't in the mood but i kinda wanted to like it more... I mean i thought that Taxi Driver was way better than this movie still a great film but come on?
Rocky won Best Picture in 1976 and alot of people think oh no its was a awful movie cuz Network Or Taxi Driver is better wow there is nothing better then good old ROCKY
Why is Rocky such a great, classic film? It's extremely well-written and character-driven. The people in it seem very real. Rocky himself is one of the most memerable, likeable film characters ever. Rocky's opponent Apollo Creed is NOT a bad guy, he's actually pretty likeable himself, however there's plenty of reason to doubt Rocky actually being able to beat him. And the acting is fantastic.
Hey James, you should do a giant review of some films like "Clash Of the Titans",(both older version and newer version if you have seen it) "Jason and The Argonauts", "Sinbad series" etc.
Or maybe another Top Ten like top ten Sci - Fi Movies, or Top Ten Worst film lines, but I am taking in to consideration that you must have alot of time on your hands, like the nerd videos, but it would be cool if you did some more film reviews.
Hellofade2, rocky released in 1976 and wrestler released in 2008, Like you said. Rocky is about boxing, and Wrestler is about wrestling. Rocky has 6 movies. And wrestler is just one. Rocky is better to me and also, rocky has the statue and the stairs in Philadelphia.
i used to box when i was young but then my right eye got badly damged like rocky and i was forced to quit boxing. but then as a teenager i saw the rocky films and it made me determined to get back into boxing so i keep practising on my own untill i was 25 and learned how to box with one eye. After this i was aloud back into the amatur-pro league again and now i'm working my way up the ranks.
Thank you Rocky for giving me the determination to make my dreams come true!

Love that guy!

the only thing I didn't like was how unrealistic the actual boxing was. I know it's a drama, but seeing as how Rocky is centered around the sport, it would have been nice to see some authentic boxing techniques. pretty good movie still.

Rocky won Best Picture in 1976 and alot of people think oh no its was a awful movie cuz Network Or Taxi Driver is better wow there is nothing better then good old ROCKY
TMTGeneralDeath 1 year ago
Why is Rocky such a great, classic film? It's extremely well-written and character-driven. The people in it seem very real. Rocky himself is one of the most memerable, likeable film characters ever. Rocky's opponent Apollo Creed is NOT a bad guy, he's actually pretty likeable himself, however there's plenty of reason to doubt Rocky actually being able to beat him. And the acting is fantastic.
petercharleskrug 1 year ago
Hey James, you should do a giant review of some films like "Clash Of the Titans",(both older version and newer version if you have seen it) "Jason and The Argonauts", "Sinbad series" etc.
Or maybe another Top Ten like top ten Sci - Fi Movies, or Top Ten Worst film lines, but I am taking in to consideration that you must have alot of time on your hands, like the nerd videos, but it would be cool if you did some more film reviews.
starshine699 1 year ago
Hellofade2, rocky released in 1976 and wrestler released in 2008, Like you said. Rocky is about boxing, and Wrestler is about wrestling. Rocky has 6 movies. And wrestler is just one. Rocky is better to me and also, rocky has the statue and the stairs in Philadelphia.

i love rocky so much!
i used to box when i was young but then my right eye got badly damged like rocky and i was forced to quit boxing. but then as a teenager i saw the rocky films and it made me determined to get back into boxing so i keep practising on my own untill i was 25 and learned how to box with one eye. After this i was aloud back into the amatur-pro league again and now i'm working my way up the ranks.
Thank you Rocky for giving me the determination to make my dreams come true!
