The soldiers carrying them were slow and easy targets, and a good hit into the backpack would cause it to explode. The only guy burning then was the soldier carrying the weapon. But probably he would already be dead then, seeing the fact that all enemy soldiers would concentrate all their fire on the flame thrower guy, to escape such a death...

@DGneoseeker1 It depended on the kind of flame they wanted. When you see WWII footage of marines using flamethrowers and it shoots out in a long stream, that was "thickened" fuel. The benefit of using thickened fuel is primarily range, the flame will shoot further. Unthickened fuel fills spaces better and was used as well, but not to a wide extent. Today, our military doesn't use flamethrowers. They have incendiary rockets that do the job.

@DistendedPerinium In addition to extended range, Napalm sticks to everything. When I shot a flamethrower we were running diesel fuel through it. Napalm is some nasty stuff. Also, the napalm that was used in WW2 is made with a different thickening agent than the napalm used in later wars.

This particular flamethrower is using some sort of gas as the propellant. (ie, element gas, not gasoline) Could be gas, propane, etc. The original flamethrowers of that era used a jellified gasoline. This caused it to fall, and stick to ANYTHING. The fact that the oil got into pores on a persons body while ignited was what made it impossible to extinguish. This one is obviously for demonstration only, versus the weaponized ones. (Just some fun facts^^)
