dammit, if i'd had a bass nickname id want the ox but its damn taken and only a self righteous fool would take it from THE OX himself john entwistle, legend
What impresses me about Entwistle is that even when he plays at this level, there's a sense that he's got even more in reserve, that he could play faster and harder but he was such a committed musician that he did was was best for the song rather than showing off. Well, OK, maybe he shows off a bit but c'mon, he's entitled -- he's freakin' John Entwistle!
A good live rendition of one of the best tracks from the 1973 album Quadrophenia. Ringo Starr's son on the drums by the looks of it. Entwhistle still alive then. Townsend on form. Didn't realise he used capo third fret on this one. Album version arguably the best version with this perhaps a close second. (Moons drumming on the original is class) What sayest thou?!
The Ox. He stands there like a rock. With all that mayhem and craziness going on around him. And he belts out the bassline of a God. Unfuckingbeleivably awesome.
In my humble opinion this is the finest bass players song in all of rock, played by the best player ever John Entwistle. I have been playing this song for 30 years and have seen them play it live 5x and it never gets old.
In my humble opinion this is the finest bass players song in all of rock, played by the best player ever John Entwistle. I have been playing this song for 30 years and have seen them play it live 5x and it never gets old.
Pete Townshend writes music that challenges his band mates. They loved him for it. It pushed Entwistle and Moon to ever soaring heights of muscianship. This is just one example of hundreds where not only the band puched the ceiling of bass and drum playing , but ispired hundreds of future bass and drum players.
@CPBassman This song originated in the studio as a bass solo ...They liked it so much they made a song around the bass solo and there you have the real me LOL...Fuckin awsome....
I saw these guys at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago right after Who's Next was released. The last song was Wont Get Fooled Again and when Daltry screamed he went flying back into the Hiwatt amps and the stage crew had to run out to keep them from falling over. My ears rang for 4 days after and I loved it. A great memory from one of the alltime great bands.
This is probably the best post-Moon perofrmance by the Who I've ever seen! Entwhistle is just devastating, Townshend great solos and Daltrey's voice sounds great. Has there ever been a bass guitarist like Entwhistle? I mean he actually carries the melody in most Who songs. The Who were truly unique. Bass playing the melody, guitar carrying the rythm and Moon tying it all together! Genius.
to whoever said they would give up the profession of being a musician after seeing this performance is crazy... I love the who and I'm a musician and I feel INSPIRED!!!! :D
@ronnied828 The drummer is Zak Starkey! He is the son of Ringo Star and was given his first kit i believe by Keith Moon! He replaced Kenney Jones...;-)
NOBODY wants to hear piano on The Real Me. I love Townshend, but he was doing a great job of raping songs when The Who could have made a huge comeback.
@h4zre Every time you play that song you do him justice. The fact that you admire and respect him still is what's most important. If he were here today he'd just be glad people still played his stuff.
You want a bass solo? The entire song is a bass solo with the rest of the band playing and singing over it. I'm not even kidding. When the original song was recorded, John was just fucking around and improvising on his bass, and the sound engineers liked it so much they kept the take, and he played it differently every time they did the song live. So the whole thing is just one big bass solo, which makes it even more epic.
@Browncoat1138 Yup! And don't forget the interplay with Moon along with that awesome bass! This song is one massive bass & drum solo! Long live the OX... long live Moon... LONG LIVE ROCK!
FUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE OTHER DAY I WATCHED A TV SHOW, THEY WERE TALKING BOUT THE WHO, AND THEY SAID, WE STILL HAVE THE SONGER AND THE GUY WHO WROTE THE SONGS, THEY DIDNT SAID WE STILL HAVE THE SINGER AND THE FUCKING GUITAR GOD WHO WROTE THE SONGS......MAN, CHECK HIS SOLOS, THEY ARE SO GREAT.......
This Song was written about Dr. George D. Lim Echo Park, Matthew Barnett Echo Park, Furthur More, I saw Pete's Face in a Cloud last friday. along with Jerry Garcia.
I get up at around 5 to go to work so i usually go to bed at 11:15, well i just watched this song top end my day which might have not been the wisest decision considering the bass is still ringing in my ears and i have as much adrenaline as someone who's foot was just shot off.
I met John on the "farewell" tour in 1982 in Pontiac, MI . I was 17 and won a "battle of the bands" competition through a local station. I was hanging with my friend in a hall outside the dressing room and John stepped out for a smoke and we talked for 10 mins and he asked "what do you play"? I said "bass, like you". He asked me to hold my hands out, he did same, his fingers seemed TWICE my size- he said "try the drums, you'll kill your hands with the bass" - Super Guy, signed my t-shirt.
All these comments about Entwistle! I love it. John, Geddy from Rush and Justin Chancellor from Tool are the only bassists who get away with playing lead bass like this.
Roger Completes the band. Pete and John were (is) great singers but on song's like this one Pete or Johns voice couldn't fit in as well as Roger's. Honestly I think the weakest link in The Who is anyone they brought in after Keith Moon and John Entwistle's death so in this vid the weakest link's are the key board'st and Zak Starkey although Zak is a damn good drummer he still can't play as well as Keith could,
@TheTzdope To suggest Daltrey is the weak link is rediculous. His destinctive vocals completed excellence. His motivation to perform & succeed with The Who steered the band through adversity & tradgedy. How many other bands could have survived without the quality of Moon & Entwistle. Daltreys motivation & dedication to The Who has enabled a new generation of youth to enjoy live performances. However, I have removed my origional post, it was a bit strong. Take care.
you know how people say well that's 5:24 of my life I'm never getting back? Well that was 5:24 I willingly gave, Unbelievable vibe, as cool as Roger is, I could quite easily listen to Pete & John trading riffs, Entwistle plays that bass like nobody else! BRILLIANT!
I don't know about Zak. He's quick & makes a few good flourishes but I just don't think he's right. He doesn't have the energy to drum for The Who. Simon Philips is still the best replacement for Keith Moon & it's too bad he wasn't permanent. I wish Pete would dump that Strat & go back to using the Les Paul.
I agree with swlabr regarding their choice of drummer. Pino Palladino is no slouch on bass either.....it must be a young musician's nightmare though to audition for Pete. The man is undeniably a genius, but I imagine that he can be difficult to please
Thanks to Track, Polydor, UMG, Eel Pie Publishing and of course The Who for letting this great clip stay up here on YT for everyone to enjoy! This is absolutely AWESOME!
@ragglefraggle09 My personal fav is Numbers. The fill-ins there blow the doors off this. I bought this dvd when it came out and it's a stellar show. Love the whole thing, but this and Drowned are me two favs. Peace...
I saw The Who 3 or 4 times in the seventies... Awesome Strikes me a little funny that Townsend would play over Entwisle's bass part in this song He always was a jerk.... Still fantastic player and writer. He called quadrophenia his greatest work. They were all great.
Daltrey is opening for Eric Clapton in a few weeks in Indianapolis...July 2nd I believe. I'm curios to see his set and what it consists of... The real me was and is a great tune... I can see those laser's now
@olbuzz I think it's the sound mans fault that we can barely hear Entwisle's bass line. I'm going to see Daltrey and Clapton at Summerfest (milwaukee) the last week of June, if I remember, I'll send you a quick review of the show. I have ticket stubs from a couple of The Who's concerts in the seventies but, I can't really say I remember being at them. ;-)
@Jackle61 Not sure the sound man encouraged Townsend to doodle over whats normally a solo bass line. He could have turned the guitar Off I guess. Townsend's brother is Daltrey's guitar player.
I passed on the Clapton's Cincy show to hit Indy on Friday night the same week, Bet Daltrey sings with EC.. Looks like they added Detroit on Sat. Clapton's around here alot his wifes from Columbus. The early Who shows are fuzzy but I remember the Quadrophenia tour. I saw a bunch of em.
@olbuzz Pete can do whatever the fuck he chooses, it's his fucking song. No arguing Entwistle was an integral part of the Who's sound, but it was Pete's blood and sweat that fuelled the band.
If you insist on posting idiotic comments at least learn how to spell their fucking names correctly you jackass.
@dchuk ..... Look Shakespeare ..... You outta spend more time listening to the music rather that play-in spell check poleese. Pete can do whatever he wants. Just like you can be a blind back wards ass country fuc when it comes to musical etiquette.
You sound like his girlfriend takin up for him. When he starts degrading the music thats pretty sad. Classic solo turned into a muddled mess. Thats called no discipline
Grow up Groupie..... You don't don't know what your talkin about
@olbuzz Look yourself jackass...why don't you log onto the Who's website and send Townshend an email critiquing him on his musical etiquette. Probably a 0.00001% chance he'd reply to a dumb shit like you, but if he did I'd give at least a sack of hammers to read it.
Speaking of a sack of hammers, be thankful Youtube doesn't employ an IQ policy for it's users or you'd have to find somewhere else to post.
@dchuk Alright you simple Idiot you win. Quit wastin (spell check that) my time and try to finish High School. If thats not an option at least move on to something relevant. At this point Townsend's brother's a better guitar player than he is. Doe's your Daddy know your play'in with his computer... and yourself. This is George Micheal id'nt it
This is a quote by Daltrey from an online guitar mag site, and it says it all:
"Zak is Keith Moon-trained; Keith bought Zak his first drum kit and Zak was taught by Keith. So, you know, it's totally organic, so it's almost like Keith is still there. Some nights it's eerie. Zak's now been in the band long enough, we can now throw things at him like we used to with Keith and he comes back with something like Keith would have come back with. Which is kinda even getting more scary."
Both Townshend and Daltrey have stated that Zak Starkey brought a lot of Moon with him to the Kit. Yes, not the same style, but a great deal of the same intensity, with a lot of the same sense of abandon that Moon had. Also, it's quite fitting, as Moon gave Starkey his first drum kit and lessons when Starkey was a young lad.
This was John's song. I don't care what The Who could have ever added to The Real Me, it'll always be John's song more than anyone else's. Frig, the fact that he got the bass line down on the first take, and that it was a 'joke take'...I...I'm just always at a loss for words (even though I've posted about 10 comments on this video).
dammit, if i'd had a bass nickname id want the ox but its damn taken and only a self righteous fool would take it from THE OX himself john entwistle, legend

not gonna lie. wish they kept the bass as the lead instrument on this song!!. Pete's awesome. but common, the bass is why this song's a classic!

4:28 look at how effortlessly and gracefully Entwistle's fingers just fly around that bass... and DAMN Starkey looks like his daddy...

whoa i knew pete was good, but his solo fill-ins here were really impressive

I can see those laser's now
olbuzz 1 year ago
@olbuzz I think it's the sound mans fault that we can barely hear Entwisle's bass line. I'm going to see Daltrey and Clapton at Summerfest (milwaukee) the last week of June, if I remember, I'll send you a quick review of the show. I have ticket stubs from a couple of The Who's concerts in the seventies but, I can't really say I remember being at them. ;-)
Jackle61 1 year ago

If you insist on posting idiotic comments at least learn how to spell their fucking names correctly you jackass.
dchuk 1 year ago
@dchuk ..... Look Shakespeare ..... You outta spend more time listening to the music rather that play-in spell check poleese. Pete can do whatever he wants. Just like you can be a blind back wards ass country fuc when it comes to musical etiquette.
You sound like his girlfriend takin up for him. When he starts degrading the music thats pretty sad. Classic solo turned into a muddled mess. Thats called no discipline
Grow up Groupie..... You don't don't know what your talkin about
olbuzz 1 year ago
@olbuzz Look yourself jackass...why don't you log onto the Who's website and send Townshend an email critiquing him on his musical etiquette. Probably a 0.00001% chance he'd reply to a dumb shit like you, but if he did I'd give at least a sack of hammers to read it.
Speaking of a sack of hammers, be thankful Youtube doesn't employ an IQ policy for it's users or you'd have to find somewhere else to post.
dchuk 1 year ago
@dchuk Alright you simple Idiot you win. Quit wastin (spell check that) my time and try to finish High School. If thats not an option at least move on to something relevant. At this point Townsend's brother's a better guitar player than he is. Doe's your Daddy know your play'in with his computer... and yourself. This is George Micheal id'nt it

@olbuzz Actually jackass, Rae's my daddy. Doe is my mother in law.

Which is kinda even getting more scary."
gasaholic47 1 year ago 2
