Excellent though this is, Dutoit's mid1990's recording for Decca with the Montreal S,O, has more drama and intensity and Richard Leech is simply the finest Faust I have ever heard.

What an avant-guardist Berlioz! Just genial! At the same time he wrote this unbelievable music Verdi was still composing his early oom pah pah operas.
Très joli. J'ai juste bien ri à 1:27. Sur la partition, il est écrit que le Ah doit être chanté comme un cri d'effroi. Ici on a l'impression que les jeunes femmes sont heureuse de voir passer le cortège infernal.
lol, I lvoe how the conductor statsy so poised during such a dramatic movement! Bet if Salonen was in charge of this his arms would be waving like a mad man! (Not thats theres anything wrong with either conductors style! Ive watched this video a thousand times and this is the firs ttime im really nocing the conductor)
If salonen be there..thn his hands will be more like an octopus..haha!HE will be jumping and and face expression is like he was just been in a chaotic time..XD
If you can find it check out the video"Journey to the Abyss"(Eng.) by Georges Schwiegebel, some stunning animation to go along with this intense piece!
OMG!! What is that extremely low....beastly brass instrument!? I've neer heard, or seen such a thing and since it's 1 30 AM Im too lazy to look it up.
The Music is so intense, in this scene Berlioz changes the musical style so much and creates this unnatural masterpiece. It almost sounds as if he knows exactly what hell sounds like and he transforms that sound into something we can all understand. It's stunning.
This really is a remarkable performance. Does anyone know where I could get the DVD of this opera (and I mean this version, with the NHK orchestra). I've been looking for it for weeks but cant seem to find it. Thanks in advance!
My God - What is considered THE musical version of Faust? There are so many, and there are some compositions that were inspired by only a few scenes from Goeth's poem. versions from Belios, Liszt, Wagner, - Are they all parts - Which is the most "complete" version that is the epitome of all these compositions?
OMG i'm singing in Damnation de Faust as part of the choir in T.O it's sooooo amazing to sing w/ the orchestra and to be conducted by Charles Dutoit!
My choir, The Singapore Symphony Children's Choir will be performing this soon. Please come to our concert here in Singapore! Trust me, it will be a night that would not be forgotten!!
@saintdracula Close: Charles Dutoit is the greatest Berlioz interpreter on stage since Monteux. Colin Davis ought to learn a few things from Dutoit; he's an amateur at best with this music... Berlioz would be in tears, hearing Dutoit or Levine conduct this so perfectly...
The "black guy" is only Willard White - the best bass this centuary you moron!!
Top in all opera houses over the world and has been for years. Earns more for 1performance than you could hope for earning in 5 years!! If you post please don't show your ignorance.
Any of you folks living near Rochester NY can hear this scene plus the final scene of the opera, along with Carmina Burana on July 28 at 8 PM and July 29 at 3 PM at Hochstein performance Hall. Visit the website fingerlakeschoralorg for info,

@kev7978 yes they are supposed to do that. we did really scream, but every chorus does it his own way..

Probably a combination of the Tuba and Bass Trombone..both of which I play.
They're so much fun to play but require alot of breathing exercises to master and control

You can hear a lot of Beethoven influence in the beginning of this piece. But this is a brilliant work, thanks for the upload.
mickyj300x 2 years ago
Agreed Micky. Damnation has a lot of references to Beethoven (especially Fidelio), and also precedes Wagner. Stupendous work!

The singing is breathtaking - and very believable. In the version I saw, everything was good except for this scene.

the descent into hell is trully devasting music, but played a little hastily here for my taste. They should savour that moment...
