Okay, I got the beer night date wrong- I remember august but it was June 4th. but the point is the 1974 Indians drew pretty well that year and were as terrible as has been made out. The Perry Brothers and Gaylord's 15 game winning streak, Hall of famer Frank Robinson, Bosman not hitter, being in contention into August made them and interesting team. More interesting than the 2011 edition of the indians. But I'm biased because I grew with the 60s and 70 teams.
2 week before beer night, Cleveland starter Dick Bosman pitched a no hitter against the World Champion Oakland As at Cleveland Stadium, attendance was 24,000. that was July 19th 1974. The Indians were 47 - 44 / 2 games out of first place.
The first place Baltimore Orioles could even out draw the 1974 Indians. Cleveland had 1,114,262 fans that year while the first place Orioles had only 962,085- they couldn't even draw a mill. This myth about the last place 74 indians, last in attendance is just bunch of untrue crap.
THESE ARE THE TEAMS THE INDIANS OUT DREW IN 1974. THE WORLD CHAMPION OAKLANDS As COULDn'T EVEN DRAW A MILLION. Pittsburgh Pirates 1,110,552 Houston Astros 1,090,728 San Diego Padres 1,075,399 Montreal Expos 1,019,134 Chicago Cubs 1,015,378 Atlanta Braves 981,085 Baltimore Orioles 962,572 Milwaukee Brewers 955,741 California Angels 917,269 Oakland Athletics 845,693 Minnesota Twins 662,401 San Francisco Giants 519,987
Heck, in the latter part of the year they aquired Frank Robinson from Baltimore. That means the team had two hall of famers in Gaylord and Frank. Buddy Bell was at third, another great player.. Perry drew large crowds, especially during his 15 game winning streak. In fact, both Perry brother drew well for them that year. A lot of teams had the beer night. We just happen to have trouble at ours. The tribe gave away a cadillac to the one millionth fan.
I can't stand historical revisionism and the 1974 Indians have been a constant victim of it. The 74 Indians were 7th in attendance that year, drawing 1,114,262 fans and outdrew the world champian As.. They were near 1st place well in August and over 500 for well into August, finally falling apart with a bad September and finishing 77-85. They had great players that year. Gaylord Perry was 21 wins and 13 loses, and won 15 games in row. His brother Jim Perry was 17 - 12. No more room.
Just goes to show, Ohio can't handle alcohol. When Milwaukee held the exact same promotion, there were no disruptions of the game. Then there's the recent Vancouver riots. It all goes to show, Wisconsin knows how to handle a beer, and have good sportsmanship better than anyone else.
@Terrozman DOH! I think you are talking about the "Disco Demolition Night" Fiasco that occured in Chicago at Comisky Park ion July 12, 1979 a little over five years after the "Ten Cent Beer Night" Fiasco in Cleveland. I heard Billy Carter, the Brother of (then) Future President Jimmy Carter, was at the Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland, but I have not been able to verify it.
I was with my father and my cousin. I remember the chair incident in the 9th inning. That's when all hell broke loose. To this day I have never been to a sporting event where I was so thoroughly entertained. My cousin and I, 36 years later, were talking about that game this past Christmas. A friend of his has pictures when the woman was on the field flashing (but you don't see cleavage). What a great game!
I was at that game. I was 14 years old. It was 10 cent beer night and I was sitting in right field. There were about 20,000 people at the game. I remember when people ran onto the field chasing Rangers. I laughed my butt off. It was great. And yes, I had beer and I was 14!.
@tritonrocks hahaha. people were probably to drunk to give a damn if kids were drinking beer. and security and stadium personnel were to busy getting naked people off the field to notice. i wasnt there. i just read about it. i wasnt born until the 90s. or the good years in tribe history
@BRIANROX1 They were drunker than hell. Like I said below, I was 14 and had 2 beers that night. Nobody was watching, nobody cared. And the Indians sucked the big one (hmmmm ... they do in 2010 ... some things never change). But when that 9th inning came, yessiree was it a scream. I wish there was more video footage. I guess there is (Channel 43 WUAB, who used to carry the Indians on their network) but it hasn't gone public to my knowledge.
@tritonrocks well i read before all hell broke loose the Indians actually tied the game 5-5 before theumps forfeited the game (in texas' favor) and the '74 season wasnt to bad they finished in the middle of the eastern division(it was west and east)

Absolutely hilarious! I love the fact that you guys actually knew baseball history and made it according to so! Great sense of humor!
Also, VERY good job at referring to the all-red Indians uniforms. Those were horrendous...xD

I don't think you can have a ten cent beer night at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska because alcohol is not allowed in the stadium

If I was in charge of the Cleveland Cavaliers, I would have ten cent beer nights for every home game against the Miami Heat.

For all who don't know.
This is what started the downfall of disco in the 70's.

@Terrozman I graduated (HS) in '74 and Disco wasn't even on the radar... It didn't hit until a few years later...

With how the Indians are doing in 2010---this may not be a bad idea---Ten Cent Beer Night!

Now all that is needed is a ballad for Disco Demolition Night to accompany this song.

This was a very funny song. I wished there was footage of that incident. Thanks for sharing.
