  • Swedish Volvo invented 3 point seatbelt

    German Merc invented Airbag

    European Cars FTW

  • mercedes benz didnt made the first airbag americans did when they did more test on there cars

  • @ChrisBennett18 True, but the airbags on the American models weren't really that good, and were sold as an alternative to the seatbelt.

The W126 S-Class had the first 'modern' airbag that worked properly as an airbag should, and the design of present airbags is in fact still pretty much similar.

That combined with the invention of the safety cell (if I'm not mistaken by Bela Barenyi and his engineers who worked with Mercedes at the time) have made Merc cars some of the safest in the world.

  • I am pretty sure that General Motors had airbags "air cushion restraints in 1973, in fact there is one for sale at the Bonhams collector car sale, seen at automobile mags website right now. And as far as MB having airbags in 1992, all cars had to have them by then in the US, at least the driver side that is.

  • at 51 secinds, why did the airbag go off, he was just manuvering around cones.

  • history, airbag, mercedes benz, airbag, mercedes, benz, history, mercedes benz???

why isn't it called a luftsack?

because its an American invention the first cars with airbags were oldsmobile tornado's in 1974, six years later the germans waked up.

  • The airbag had its world premiere in 1981 in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W 126. The design engineers of the Stuttgart car maker researched this revolutionary restraint system for 13 long years and protected it by patent in 1971. Mercedes-Benz did not replace the seat belt with the airbag, but combined both features to create an effective restraint system.

  • have you ever bin in germany? all the Hollywood movies are german voiced-over , not one english word enters germany. so if the air bag would be a german invention it would be called a luftsack. AIR means Automotive Inflatable Restraint.

almost every car invention is an american invention.

  • The driver airbag, fitted as standard in all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars since 1992, was followed by the front passenger airbag (introduced in the S-Class in 1987, standard in all model series from 1994) and further systems like the side airbag and window bag.
