  • This to me is what sold the show: Hearn and Lansbury having so much fun in what their doing. That was one of my problems with the film. Not a lot of people looked like they even cared, though I do applaud them for taking a different direction by making him a real serial killer movie as opposed to a black comedy (though I like the latter better).

  • Such a cheery commercial for a dark show!

  • okay now I'm scared <o<

  • So happy, it's creepy...

  • i remember this from when i was a kid. Angela Landsbury and George Hearn are the perfect pair for me I saw Landsbury and Cariou and it was good (the only version I have seen, which keeps the tooth pulling scene9 but i swear nothing compares to Landsbury and Hearn. I am not a fan of Paige or Lupone in the role and the film version cuts too much, even though it is visually stunning. Hell i think Sweeney Todd would be a hell of a part to play!

  • He call her his pet??? xD

  • great great commercial!

  • This is back when Broadway was in its golden age. Why didn't shows like this, Seussical, and Jekyll & Hyde run longer! They are deserving of a revival!

  • @Broadwaypuppet Sweeney Todd did get a revival in either 2005 or 2006. I saw it when it toured back in 2008.

  • @VanitasxAura I know, but the revival SUCKED because the actors doubled as the orchestra!!!

  • @Broadwaypuppet That part I agree with you on...and the fact that Johanna was too operatic for me. I discretely cringed to myself. Plus, they got Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett. Angela Lansbury and Helena Bonham Carter are my favorite Mrs. Lovetts.

  • @VanitasxAura AMEN!!

  • WOW! ANGELA LANDSBURY IS SO.... YOUNG! SHE LOOKS GREAT! George Hearn rocks 2!

  • best lovett ever no one can ever be as good as angela

  • is it just me or does Hearn's right eyebrow have more makeup on it? they look very uneven 0.o

Lansbury=best most entertaining Lovett ever! Really, no stage production I have seen has been comparable to the one these two were in :D

  • @imsweeneytodd wel in the second line of the opening number.;.." his skin was pail and HIS EYE WAS ODD." meaning that one of his eyes looked weird. that is why one eyebrow has more makup on than the other one.

  • @horerfandod3 lol right got it xD I knew that those were the lyrics but I guess I was having trouble understanding why they did the makeup like that. It makes sense now

  • @horerfandod3 I didn't even notice that!

  • at AAAAAAAAAAAAAAL :D BEST cannibal song ever made!!!

  • @hanitaafu you sir have never heard cannibal: the musical

  • @whiteandnerdy2damax cannibal :D sounds interesting xD

  • I love any version of this show (first I saw the filmed version with these two and then the bway revival) but Angela is the best. So sue me.

  • This looks more like a Dunkin Donuts commercial from the 80's. Except it's advertising meat pies! ROFL!!

  • @shadowfox1383 human meat pies to be more precise.

  • Hearn is much less ugly in this commercial. I wish they would have done his makeup the same they did for the musical itself.

  • that doesnt look like george hearn.... :P

  • Why does it look nothing like the recorded version?

  • @GoofyIndian92 I'm guessing they just wanted the commercial to be a little punchier, because commercials are short. The play had a beautifully tense, slow buildup to it that just wouldn't have been practical at 20 seconds long.

  • why are george's eyebrows two different sizes?

  • @imsweeneytodd this is len cariou

  • @pilsburydoughboy555 no

    this is definitly george hearn

  • @nickmandl Oh! It seems you're right. heheh... sorry. He looks like len crious to me here.

  • @pilsburydoughboy555 the commercial says Sweeney Todd starring Angela Landsbury and George Hearn

  • Horrible commercial.

Still I prefer the more darker tone of the movie.

  • @chrischico You obviously did not see the show on Broadway. The show was VERY dark and I saw it six times. The third time I sat in the 3rd row center and when I could see the details of the horrific make up and costumes, I was actually shaking. The movie is much lighter, particularly with the silly casting of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter who looks like she's in a coma.

  • Very scary at 0:21

  • George Hearn looks really creepy!

  • If it's not the latter...I might need psychiatric help.

  • Well since Angela & George did it several years prior, it would be the other way around.

  • believe me, im not trying to be mean, but how could they be like johhny and helena if this was made before tim burtons Sweeney Todd? Im just wondering.

  • the movie Sweeney Todd is based on this play

  • yeah i know, thats why i said "how could angela and george try to be like johnny and helena?"

  • I believe a couple of people are misunderstanding my comment, i was mearly saying that Angela and George look different than in the original play (yes i do know it came first) and their costumes and hair look very much like the ones of Johnny and Helena. i hope that cleared it up. sorry for upseting fans. :)

  • ohh kk! Sorry just a misunderstanding.

  • lmao!!

  • there's one thing very different, if you listen carefully, you can hear talented people singing it.

    oh yeah! I went there!!

  • @Cbwidesmile WINNER

  • Yep. They went forward years into the future, watched the movie, then went back in time and performed the show based off of the movie.

  • Creepy. lol

  • Angela and George are soo cute :] haah gotta love them

  • They are nuts and beyond prefect! I mean you look at this and you are like damn... O_O witch is what your sapost to do. ^_^

  • Comment removed

  • Hahaha, Awesome! :D

  • Angela Lansbury is much better than Patty Lupone!!! in Dutch we say 'skenk' to somebody like Patty!

  • What year was this?

  • It Was Very Old 1982!!

  • thats awesome! Angela and George did such an amazing job with the characters. nice commercial

  • I love this musical :)

  • Angela Lansbury <3

  • This commerical is awesome! I would sell my soul to see this production of Sweeney Todd way back when

  • buy the video

  • I do have it, but it's nothing like seeing them live. That's the essence of theatre

  • This is awsome

  • he looks REALY pale there.

*i would have left a better comment sorry!

  • xD dude so creepy. But the dvd is great. lol

  • creepy...

  • I love all these old commercials! Another cool thing about growing up in the Tri-State area.

  • love hearn and lansbury i own the dvd

  • Oh Frack, That scared the shit out of me. Looked like 2 devils sitting there singing about serving up humans.

I think if I saw this commercial then, I would have bought tickets asap.

  • this is scary

  • I think it's meant to be XD

  • classy!

  • Angela Lansbury is awsome

  • Sondheim is such a brilliant composer! I do love Sweeney Todd. I saw the revival and it was awsome! I wish they did a commerical with Len in it though.

  • The Cariou/Landsbury is the "famous" commercial where they demonstrate the props from the show. It was posted until a few months ago. Maybe somebody will bring it back (fingers crossed).

  • George Hearn was born to play Sweeney Todd, and Angela Lansbury was born to play Mrs. Lovett. Sweeney Todd is one of those musicals if you want a thriller night.

  • Wow, I never saw this before! It's great!! Thank you!

  • They look more like human pirogis than human meat pies... "Lovett" isn't a very Polish name. Though with the hair and the growl, she looks half-evil-poodle.

  • no lovett is british

  • It's a cockney British accent. :]

  • So, how long was Len in it before George took over?

  • George took over in March 1980. So, about a year.

  • George looks different her (thinner? younger?) than he does in the actual production (the one on the 1982 dvd anyway).

I could have sworn there was another commercial for the play on youtube a while back, when Len was playing Sweeney Todd. Anyone know what happened to that?

I really need to get the OBC soundtrack for Sweeney Todd, would love to hear how Len sounded in the role (I've heard he was much better than George).

I LOVE the Tim Burton movie too, Johnny was fantastic in the role

  • If you haven't gotten the OBC yet, then you must! It's wonderful to listen to, Len is fantastic (he is MUCH better than George, and from the home videos of the OBC Sweeney Todd floating around on youtube...his acting was better too).

I remember that commercial too, thought it was fantastic and was disappointed when I couldn't find it again to add to my favorites.

  • *happy sigh* I love this musical. Yay for George.

  • i liked tim burton's direction very much. and i liked the plays direction. 1 more thing to say. my comments were 2 ppl who say 'oh the play was crap' or 'oh the movie eats butt compared to the play' my comments were NOT 2 the ppl who say 'i like angela better' becuz if u like one better than thats fine just comparing them is wat im trying to get at. do u guys get wat im saying? anyway, COOL commercial. :)

  • ppl think about it if johnny and helena were doing that stuff and acting like that in the movie, ppl wuld have got up and left and wuld say wtf! that sort of stuff is 4 broadway, if angela and george were doing wat johnyy did in the movie it wuld be boring, rlly boring. And there voices, we rlly dont nedd johnny and them screamin up in the movie when we have the stereos up there but in the play we needed that so we culd hear them. they are two different productions rlly uncomparable.

    im nt done

  • ppl rlly think about it, seriously i know I wuld have got up and said wtf if they were doing that in the movie. and i wuld have fell asleep if they were doing wat they were doin in the movie, in the play. as of the critisism to the movie performance. no need blaming the actors becuz apparently it was there direction. 'oh helena was this, helena was that' well thats wat she was told to do, did u think about that. now u guys culd go into blaming tim burton. not done yet.

  • what r u talking about

johnny has an amazing voice and if you think that bad then you dont know what good singing is

and dont say i dont know what singing is either

IM A FREAKING CHOIR STUDENT TEACHER

    I HAD YEARS OF PRACTICE

    SO I WOULD KNOW MORE

IN MY OPINION JOHNNY AND GEORGE ARE BOTH WONDERFULL AT SINGING

  • i know johnny has an amazing voice when did i say he didnt?

  • huh?

    wait what did i say

  • ok im confused, i thought u said that I had said johnny doesnt have an amazing voice (which i nvr did)

  • now im confused

    ok lets just start over

    hi im obliviongamer444

and a big sweeney todd fan

  • hello, im Free411 and im a sweeney todd fan too :)

  • hi im bathumb45 im a sweeney todd fan also^-^

  • ello XD

  • all I have to say is thank god for tims movie.

  • iv never agreed with anybody more in my LIFE

  • Guys, don't compare the live musical to the movie. They are two completely differnt styles. It's not fair to compare them. I personallylove George Hearn and Angela Lansbury AND Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

  • I have to agree. Tim made a totally different version, and that's okay. Johnny and Helena were great for Tim's version.

That being said, I prefer the Hearn/Lansbury or LuPone version.

  • I agree with both you and Zukoluver5, the movie and the original play are totally different animals and are both fantastic!

While I do prefer the film over the play, I don't think it's fair to compare the two.

Len (who I feel is much better in the role than Hearn), Angela, Helena, and Johnny were all fantastic in the roles!

  • Its funny, because I HATED George Hearn in this 1982 play. However, in 2001 with Patti LuPone, he was A MILLION TIMES BETTER! In this ad, he looks like Dracula, and he's thinner and his face is different.

  • This is the definitive cast right here. Depp and Carter aren't even good enough to pick the toe nails out of Lansbury's and Hearn's pies.

  • Len Cariou is better!

  • I really like Len too, but I prefer George Hearn in the role. Len was great in "A Little Night Music", though.

  • That's for sure. You have the right to your opinion but I still think Len is better. Actually they both sound kind of alike to me.

  • Hey! Dont you get that the movie is a MOVIE?!? They didnt need them screaming and making huge movments like they needed on stage! This would be boring if they did it Tim's way BUT It would be stupid if Tim did it this way! Tim had a limited budget so he had to cut out songs and scenes but does it really matter? The movie is 2 hours long already! Did we really need to add another hour to it just to get all the songs in it? We all have out opinions but you dont need to make fun of the actors!

  • What lovely imagery you use! LOL

  • I haven't seen Len Cariou version but this is what I think: Best to worst Mrs. Lovett: 1. Patti LuPone 2. Angela Lansbury 3. Helena Bonham Carter I could easily picture Patti's Lovett, and Angela's was a refreshing departure from her usual serious roles, but Helena just kept tossing away the most divine lines like they were total rubbish. Johnny made the movie worthwhile. I'm not saying Helena wasn't enjoyable, just that it was a huge letdown after seeing Patti's and Angela's superior versions.

  • imagine what it must have been like to see this commercial and not know anything about the production.

  • was that evan hearn

  • I wish they would make another sweeney todd on broadway. I was only a little toddler when it was. I'm 14.

  • Lansbury. + Hearn is the best combo.

Followed by LuPone + Hearn, and then Cariou + Lansbury. Poop on Depp + Carter

  • IT'S SCARY!! *hides from George*

  • angela is so funny! but george... Im not very found of him.

  • Dude, that made my night! I loved that! I have to watch it a few more times now. George Hearn and Angela Lansbury and one of my favorite pairs for Sweeney Todd and Mrs.Lovett.

  • hearn looks so young!

god, angela can sing so well <3

  • Hearn looks so different here, I couldn't tell it was him until the end when his mouth went in that shape it always does ;)

    Love him :D!

  • For God's sake, where's the Cariou/Lansbury commercial?

  • I think Sweeney is awesome!

I never get tired of this commercial, or Mrs.Lovett's quirky hair!

  • I LOVE her hair! It's so cute!

  • Teh hair... TEH HAIR!!!!!

  • Whoa George Hearn and Angela Lansbury look scary in this!!!

  • Indeed. George Hearn was my first viewing of this lovely musical *laughs*

  • mine also!

  • GEORGE HEARN!

  • i really hope that was fake. because if i hadnt seen the show and loved every second of it i would take that as a joke

  • I got to meet angela lansbury last month. We did sweeney todd and as a treat we got to meet her. I was mrs.lovett and she gave me alot of pointers.

  • Can u mention some of them? I love Angela and her character! :D

  • Well she said to remember that Mrs.Lovet is in love with Sweeney and that she feels lonely. And to remember some of her charicteristics and a whole bunch of other stuff nobody would under stand unless they were in theater. But she is so awsome.

  • where did the other stage commericial go i cant find it

  • the movie with johnny depp and helena boham carter is way better!

  • sorry, but this is really cheesy! lansbury and hearn are amazing (though I love depp and carter better.... just my humble opinion).

  • helena is way better but i like it

  • Helena couldn't carry a tune if it came with a handle! I saw the Lansbury show in 1979...incredible!

  • HAHAHAHAHA!! A HANDLE!! SO TRUE!!

  • She did a good job, but none can defeat Lansbury

  • I Agree

  • nice NAME.

    :-D

  • Helena wishes she could sing like Angela Lansbury.

  • helena wanted to be miss lovett since 11!

  • Yeah..and?

  • i know, i thought that was cute! I read an interview with her and she said that she used to wear her hair like Mrs.Lovett!

  • Are you kidding? Helena has such a weak voice! It's not bad, but weak.

  • You'd better respect her.

  • or what u her and a group of bad singers is gnna gang up on me ,im scared

  • If it hadn't been for HER, Helena Bonham Carter would never have played Mrs Lovett at all! Don't diss her!

  • no if it hadnt been 4 steven sodhiem mrs lovett wouldnt exist bub!

  • The part was specifically written for Angela Lansbury!

  • BUT HE WRTE THE PART SHE DIDNT

  • But he wrote it FOR her! She was his inspiration for the character!

  • Exactly! Lansbury was the one who attracted Carter!

  • She's a Godess, I'd like to see you try to do better.

  • she won a tony for her role as Mrs. Lovett...

  • this goes out to ilive4Johnnydepp...

like you or anyone you know could do better, prat!

  • ok idk wtheck a "prat" is but w/e i just stated my opinion and i no there r also many other opinions about angel lansbury ok so u have ur opinion and i have mine setteld SORRY if i made any1 upset i should have keppt that 2 my self

    truly sorry, Critia Depp

  • well your opinion is total crap... lol

  • U don't know singing from your ass,

    ilive4Johnnydepp.

    Angela isn't a bad singer!

  • Angela Lansbury is the BEST mrs Lovett everrrrrrrr :)))

  • is it just me or is george hearn black and white and 0:02? lol... i <3 this play!

  • I noticed that too, probably just the lighting and his make-up not mixing well.

  • i see it too. Must be his makeup

  • You gotta learn how George leans in at 0.20. Love this commercial.

  • That is George Hearn. I can tell because of the voice and when he holds out the note on all his tongue is right in the center of the o his mouth makes and Hearn does that all the time.
