surgeons can't make their faces too tight to begin with. They must leave some extra tissue to allow room for rejection and new surgeries. That is why the patients look like that at the begining. It is so sad to see people that know nothing about medicine speak like they are experts, criticizing the AWESOME work of those doctors.

Apparently the baggy, saggy skin on cheeks & jaw is deliberate, to allow room for swelling post-op. They then remove it, which tightens the face & allows better speech & expressions. That is what was done to Connie, the first US face transplant recipient.

Did you know that within the past 50 years, hemispherectomies have been GREATLY improved (and pioneered with new and better techniques by Dr. Ben Carson) which significantly reduced conjoined infant fatalities? That's just one aspect of the medical spectrum. Face implant surgery will get better over time. They aren't speaking as experts, that would be asinine. But given the nature of human intellect

@peter26london I'm not exactly sure why you are offended, but if that's how you feel, I didn't mean to be offensive. I don't see how the Turks were being harsh or tasteless. They just seemed very pragmatic with there approach on the subject and that doesn't necessarily make them any less humane. But hey, we can just agree to disagree. :)

I can understand that they probably think the Turks were maybe a bit insensitive, but I personally feel they were being realistic and hopeful. I think their approach was regarded as mean-spirited, which honestly isn't the case.

First, you don't understand a thing about reconstructive plastic surgery as well) Second - "Of course he's not gonna look as great , he's too lucky to be alive for goodness sake!" - that is exactly what they said in this vid. Obviously they're glad for him to have what he has now as compared to what he might've had if it wasn't for the surgery.

Apparently the baggy, saggy skin on cheeks & jaw is deliberate, to allow room for swelling post-op. They then remove it, which tightens the face & allows better speech & expressions. That is what was done to Connie, the first US face transplant recipient.
AMAZING.
Also, could an American tell me what a third line is that the guy fell into/onto? Something to do with trains??

As you know, diesel and other fuel burning trains run on two parallel tracks.
On an electrical train system there is a 3rd. (in between the other two) rail which carries the power. Those working on these systems no to never, ever touch that 3rd. rail as you be electrocuted. Hope that helps.

im english btw, 3rd rails are just the rail which carrys electricity to power trains, if you touch the 3rd rail and 1 of the main line rails it makes a full curcuit therefore shooting thousands of volts through your body. (my dad works on the railway :P)
