  • For all you gullible sheep out there...please Google, Andy Kaufman.

  • Crispin Glover's act died. David Letterman had a little sense of compassion.

A bad day at the office for both....

  • crispin, i love you. you are a genius.

  • Why do americans seem to think its so brilliant to go to college? If they went received further education almost anywhere it seems like something to brag about...plenty of people who work at Macdonalds or drive cabs have degrees and phd's my friend...it doesn't give you immunity from lifes little problmes like Crispin Glover going all 'conceptual' on your ass!

  • the interview was in 87.. the movie came out in 91

  • Letterman is a stereotype. Bar none.

  • Crispin is such a character, so funny n unique, dont understand y lettermen was a stiff cunt n didnt take a joke

  • @redsonja28 Letterman was probably not experienced enough back then to deal with an actor acting, like he was with Joaquin Phoenix a couple of decades later.

  • fuck letterman

  • @ThreeEyedGod Thanks for that Jay.

  • Letterman is the greatest!

  • Dave does tend to give guests a hard time, and still does....like Paris Hilton, she deserves it. This guy didn't.

  • Guys....Letterman wasn't in on the "joke". Crispin showed up in character as Rubin from the film Rubin and Ed. But at the time, the movie wasn't released yet. This interview was in 1985. Rubin and Ed was released in 1991. Nobody, including Letterman, understood what he was doing and had no idea he was going to do this.

I don't blame Letterman for getting ticked.

  • @SlasherIncorporated This interview was in 1987, not 1985.

  • @ErasmusBDraghin

I know. I pressed the wrong button. I hit 5 when I meant to hit 7.

  • My hunch is that this was fake and Letterman was in on it because that kick did actually appear to come pretty close to hitting Dave and he didn't even flinch. Had that not been planned out I think his involuntary muscles would've reacted to defend himself by moving or ducking. Also, that isn't really how somebody on acid would act. Although I guess everybody handles it different. This is the first time I've heard of or seen this clip so I could very well be wrong too.

  • its not a character he was on drugs at the time and acting like an idiot.

if it were not for david letterman and back to the future this no talent would have no career.

  • Damn, he wrecked Letterman. usually hard to get under Letterman's skin

  • Method acting,

  • Looks like Crispin Glover made a mockery of the show and embarrassed Letterman and it really pissed him off. BWAHHAHAHA

  • Letterman is a fucking jerk.

  • @loonmaniac You are exactly wrong.

  • letterman is such an asshole!

  • He definitely looks like he's on acid!

  • Dave seems so arrogant...

  • OMG, are you people really that retarded?...It's all an act.

  • "My cat can eat a whooooole watermelon!" - Rubin

  • never sit on a stage infront of a bunch of people while on LSD if youre going to be answering questions.

    Dont go too well. haha.

Poor guy looks like hes freakin out at parts.

  • Would make a good riddler for the next batman.

  • I never knew that this dude was so awesome! Why haven't we heard more of him?

  • @StevenVerd he has a cameo role in hot tub time machine

  • @StevenVerd Crispin Glover is a legend

  • I always knew Crispin was good looking....But who knew he had those ARMS?!

  • Do you think letterman knew that was gonna happen?

  • trippin balls

  • crispin glover is a hero

  • its mr. far from clowny clown clown

  • For you clowns who bad-mouth Letterman. He may make fun but he's, to my limited knowledge, never got up tried to kick his guest in the head.

  • the SINGLE greatest moment in the histroy of television ...

  • GENIUS. Letterman sucks.

  • I think he had some chicks in the audience to laugh and yell shit out.

  • lol, "Do you wanna have dinner with the guy?"

  • I am a brain expert....and in my professional opinion he is out of his mind on goofballs......

  • @SPOOKSTR a "brain expert"......you couldnt think of anything that sounded more medical than that? thats SAAAAAAAD

  • @djdan151 Not only am i a BRAIN EXPERT but i also happen to be an expert at linguistics......

  • @SPOOKSTR ye just no good t making up names for made up qualifications.... lol the fact that you're even continuing is such a joke

  • @djdan151

Every now and then a complete and total boofhead comes along who hasn't got a clue when it comes to sarcasm......that my dopey friend is you.

  • fair play to him for stayin in character

  • @joshreynolds1993 ...Joaquin Phoenix did the same thing...but he isn't known for quirky appearances, so it really bombed - I didnt get what that whole thing was about with him and Casey Affleck.

  • Crispin Glover is a frickin' genius.

  • @RocStarr913 Time has proven that Glover is an idiot. David Letterman is a legend.

  • @KellyGreen5555

I think you got that backwards.

  • @help4343 No.

  • That guy on piano is on coke. I know I should know his name, but I'm cooler than that. But he's on coke. Goddamn, look at that guy.

  • When you think about the production format of the show, you realise that even if Letterman wasn't in on the piece, TPTB were.

  • glover had recently had a movie called rubin and ed. he was staying in character from that film.

  • @johnrunion He could have at least let letterman actually interview him. He is a guest on lettermans show, he could have shown more respect for his first appearance. He lacks street smarts this guy.

  • @johnrunion Actually, this appearance was in 1987. The movie didn't come out until 1991. Crispin came up with the character's look, though, 6 years before the movie came out.

  • Crispin was acting as a character in his movie, he's not this insane really :P and letterman is a huge prick

  • I'm pretty sure he was playing a character, and I'm sure David knew that coming into the interview. Crispin Glover does crazy s***. Thats why he's Crispin Glover. Thats why we love him.

  • Look at you, trying to start fights on here. How many times did you post comments on this video??? Jesus. I almost feel bad for you. Get a life.

  • Letterman, fuckin' morron...

  • Dave, you're a dick.

  • Schizophrenia!. Such a funny Illness.

  • Schizophrenia is very funny yes, but what does that have to do with this clip? Nobody mentions schizophrenia at any point.

  • I want to have have dinner with the guy

  • 40?..that means he's now 62?..jeeze, retire already.

  • Thing is, it's not the first time it happened on Letterman, just today the whole Joaquin Phoenix thing came out. Someone like Conan O'Brian would have handled the whole thing better without making fun of his quest.

  • That sounds boring.

  • What sounds boring tht Letterman doesn't know how to handle an awkward situation or that Conan can achieve exactly what Letterman can't?

  • Conan handling it better without making fun of his guest sounds boring to me. It wouldn't be on youtube 20 years later.

  • Conan doesn't need histrionics that Letterman reduces himself to for a pull on his ratings. The Letterman stuff isn't funny anyway.

  • I don't find Letterman or O'Brien terribly funny. However O'brien's delivery definitely incorporates histrionics in monologue and other comedy pieces. His entire delivery is a contrived act, just like Letterman's. As far as interviewing, both use preinterviews so there's the histrionics for you. If anything Letterman is less inclined to stick to this preformatted interview if the guest is annoying him, and this, lack of interview etiquette is why he is disliked more.

  • Comment removed

  • It's a comedy show with sketches, so that's where acting falls into. You just mentioned how Letterman is rude to guests, who are only there because the show's producers or Letterman invited them, not out of their particular need or wish.

  • Both have sketches and interviews. Letterman is not simply rude. Most of his guests like him. If they didn't, he wouldn't be able to do a show in NYC. He's rude to guests who do not stick to the same preinterview they do with O'Brien, Leno, and every other talk show in history of that format. Lineups are arranged between the show's producers and the guest's agent in order to sell a product. Should Letterman pander to someone who comes on and derails the structure? How respectable is that?

  • Letterman has "derailed" the stucture himself, look at his Paris Hilton show. Improvisation comes into help, as a comic he would not be in a predicament if he would apply that. For a classic example of Letterman look at his first interview with Harvey Pickar who was nervous and made a joke and Letterman put him in the spot, making the poor guy regret he was even there.

  • Glover is obviously doing a bit. Letterman either just doesn't get it or is pissed off for some reason and refuses to go along with it.

  • yeah Dave's always been a bit of a dick

  • Lettermen = Dick

  • Letterman is a nasty freak

  • I saw this the night it originally aired. Thought it was one of the greatest things I'd ever seen on TV. Can anyone make out what was it that case he had?

  • In Hollywood, there's no such thing as bad publicity

  • im strong...i can arm wrestle...i can kick!!

  • so awesome... and it predates molly shannon's character sally o'malley on snl by several years.

  • crispin is just acting, its clear. probably because he really didnt wanan do the show but the producers or maneger forced him to. letterman just hates when the attention is fully on the guest and things dong tgo his way. uhh hate him

  • If he isnt on acid than he is one of the greatest actors of our time,.. do you care to pick which one?

  • saw it when it aired, mr glover was promoting some sort of show, having to do with "illateratie" in L.A. then i changed the channel to "Tales from the Darkside". Tanya Donnelly is a hottie!!!

  • This just shows what a jerk Letterman is. He is constantly making jokes at other peoples' expense, but he cannot take a joke to save his life. Glover is joking around, his kick doesn't even come close to him. But Letterman just storms off like a petulant little child who is angry about not being the center of attention.

  • One of his greatest performances. I love Crispin.

  • You can't say this was "staged" because Lettermen was not in on it. His anger afterwards is clearly sincere. Glover, on the other hand, is pulling a Andy Kaufman-like stunt. He came prepared with props, so a spontaneous acid-induced freak out doesn't seem likely.

  • Yeah, this is all a gimmick. It's all part of being an actor: doing anything to attract attention to yourself. It keeps you having a career.

  • he's on acid.

  • This is so obviously a staged appearance just like Andy Kaufman's being "beat up" on Letterman

  • Funniest anything ever.

  • yo this guy is weird

  • glover knows what he is doing.

  • He was a club kid and did a lot of drugs.

Reading the LA Weekly, they said "Crispin Glover was in a LSD frenzy"; the censors bleeped it out.

  • Whoa, he almost kicked him right in the head.

  • Oh my word! Twenty years ago! Everybody was so young!

  • This marks the beginning of the end for Crispin. A classic.

  • eh, erm, I thought mabey he was acting at first, but he seems a bit messed up.
