He often mentions that when people ask him about it, because during his warmup practices for a tournament match (which the public eye can see) he hardly does anything. He constantly mentions that on his own though, he works incredibly hard, and commentators have often said that that one aspect of Federer has always been underrated because he makes it /look/ easy.

I think the reason Federer is losing to players he used to beat easily is because they´ve adjusted their game in order to beat him and he hasnt adjusted to their change, for example he stands too close to the baseline for every serve return and the other top 10 players are serving harder now (eg Nadal). His technique remains untouched and it's very safe so he doesnt get injured often, so i think that by adjusting some aspects of his game, he can climb back to #1 again for some time and win slams
