The end honestly scared me. I'm still not sure how much of the sudden change in the Doctor's character was him convincing the captain to kill herself and how much was an actual change. And I'm not sure which one is worse.
Great review, my friend. Waters of Mars was Doctor Who at its finest. Dark, psychological, terrifying, gripping and ultimately powerful. Faultless performances from David and Lindsey and Russell's writing made it one of my top ten favourite episodes of all time.
I agree. WOM was my favourite Doctor Who special. I loved how they gave the Doctor this story line because of course.. if you knew what was going to happen.. and were as benevolent as the Doctor.. how could you resist changing things?
The monsters in the episode were quite scary and are level with the weeping angels for me. However, the scariest thing in the episode for me was Evil-Doctor! :(! Tennant's acting was amazing.
i have to say it's not very satisfying to watch the doctor do nothing for the first hour even though it the right thing to do. then in the last 20 minutes when he decides to help he becomes what he usually fights against. how many times has the doctor said "no one should havethat much power" or a variation of that to someone? I think everyone loves tennant so much that RTD decided to give us a reason to think he deserves to die. I think the Time Lord Victorius thing is that.
Travelling without a companion is definately taking a toll on his ego/personality. Rose Martha and Donna all helped him be a better person as much as he helped them. For his first 8 live he was the rebel time lords, railing against "the man". in his 9th he became "the man" because he was the only one left. In the latter part of the 10th he realized that he is "the man" and the result was not good.
I don't know if you've ever watched the classic DW series but the 6th Doctor discovered that he had (or will have) an evil distillation of himself (called the Valeyard) the got created sometime during his 12th incarnation (after Matt Smith's Doctor). But with DT's performance at the end of Water of Mars and Family of Blood, we're already seeing the evil Doctor starting to manifest itself.
not very much but i am aware of the valeyard from BBC's youtube Channel. IIRC the doctor in familyy of blood gave them many chances to stop, as he does. and then did what he had to do although it was particularly harsh. When i saw the valeyard and understood his plan I said the Doctor could never do that. Now I see he could if the circumstance is just right. Interesting connection u've made. I don't think the Valeyard thing can happen anymore because gallifrey is no longer accessible.
Actually the Valeyard existed (or still exists, or will exist) in a place called the matrix, a repository of all knowledge, which exists outside of space and time. There was a portal to the matrix on Galifrey and one outside of Galifrey. There was no mention whether the matrix was ever destroyed in the Time War. Watch episodes 13 and 14 of "Trial of a Timelord" from the classic series for a better reference.
but one scene in twom i didn't understand was when the dalek flew away during their invasion of earth. If the daleks' plan was to destroy reality, then why would it matter what would happen in 50 years' time?
it just seemed like there was a lot of kind of odd elements in this episode; like, why would adelaide's daughter be inspired to go into space after she sees her mother commit suicide?
Yeah, David Tennant leaving is pretty...bad, for want of a better word. BUT I think the events of The Stolen Earth and the Specials sort of wrap up his run as the doctor.
Oh my god, yeah, I felt exactly like you did about this episode. His nervous break down at the end, it KILLED me. David Tennant is beyond incredible. You just have to look into his eyes, and you see everything that the Doctor's been through. I'm sure Matt will be fine, but he just CAN'T be as great as David. It's crazy.
I actually felt the opposite, lol. I thought the episode as a whole was quite good but the end was just ridiculous. David's acting was fantastic but what was going on was just... well, ridiculous. Oooh, look, it's the grim reaper Ood after the Doctor's gone psycho. Didn't like it.
No one's even seen Matt Smith act as the Doctor so I don't see how anyone can comment on him just yet.
Yes David Tennant is a brilliant actor but lets not ruin it by saying he can never be beaten as if it was some kind of competition.
If I remember everyone was saying how awesome Chris Eccleston was as the Doctor and when David Tennant was first shown they were like "who the fuck is this?", myself included.
Great review, yes i thought it was a good episode and i agree that David Tennant's reign as The Doctor wasn't long enough. I'll be interested to see what Matt Smith is like in 2010.
Also, I agree that Tennant deserved just one more year, and after this he deserves to go to hollywood after his role as The Doctor, he has shown that he can ACT.
I thought it was amazing, The Doctor's sudden change in character towards the end was just...shocking at times. He was on the brink, and it was scary as hell too.
Haha, I watched it at like 3 in the morning. I couldn't sleep after :O
The ending was actually my favorite part. I think it's a great portrayal of how broken he's become as number Ten. It's so tragic, too, because he acted like he was done being fixed when he left Rose on the beach with 10.5, when really, he's much worse now. To me, it was the start of his transition to number 11. For some reason I can picture him begging the Master to just let it end. He seems so tired :(
I loved Waters of Mars, mainly because it made me feel so uncomftable. The idea of being stuck in the middle of a space, surrounded by water (especially with that "water is patient" thing the Doctor said) is not a nice one for me.
I think she was talking about how the TARDIS sound hasn't been heard this year. Planet of the Dead didn't have the TARDIS arriving or leaving. Until Waters of Mars, the TARDIS hasn't been heard since the start of the The Next Doctor.
It's more of a return to the God-Complex given the way certain previous Doctors have acted, The seventh in particular committed genocide on at least one occasion, The sixth had quite the sadistic streak to him in some situations. Ten will do everything he can for a peacefull solution, but if that fails, heaven help those that oppose him.
This is a good end to the tenth Doctor resembling Christ just a bit too often, in my opinion. That one with the Master a couple of years back, when he transformed from Gollum into David Tennant and rose up on a purple cloud of guff saying "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..." all because of the power of the word "Doctor" and everyone having belief in him - bleurgh. A stretch for a programme that used to pride itself on holding to science rather than magic.
I loved this ep - i thought in trailers that monster looked crap and not scary but it was pretty good.
I think the line you were referring to "The Doctor, Doctor, Fun." Have to say my favourite moment was the "its taken me all these years to realise that the laws of time are MINE & they will obey me"
my opinions exactly, i loved the ep. best special by far, only one close to it was Voyage of the Damned. i loved the plot, the whole fixed moments in time thing, then the 'i can beat time' bit. I think it was really impacting too, really strong episode, only a couple of others i've loved that much (VotD, Blink, Midnight, S3 finale).
Also I really thought the 'Steffi get back' scene was really touching ):
can i suggest a video idea please? i really want to know what your fav eps are overall/why
I think it's better for DT to leave now than stay another year. The longer the public associate an actor with the role, the harder it'll be for the next actor to establish themselves. Also I think it's better for someone to go when they're still going to be missed. A year of Stephen Moffatt's writing with David Tennant as Doctor would have been cool though, I have to say. Tennant was at his very best when he had great scripts from Moffatt, and failed to be the best because of poor RTD scripts.
Thank you for pointing out the RTD scripts-- he had some winners, but some of the finales *rolls eyes...As much as I like Moffatt's ideas, I do hope he fleshes them out a bit more, and hopefully that will be the end of the shoe-horned homosexual and political references of RTD. Subtlety is a virtue.
Yeah, some winners, but as you say many of his finales are just too much. The problem is he goes too far in the direction of the impossible, and leaves the resolutions until the last few minutes, whereupon suddenly there'll be a thing nearby that magically solves everything and everybody can go home. At least this time we know Tennant will be regenerating, so hopefully there won't need to be a magic solution at the end.
Exactly. He gets a little beyond himself; some of his stories need an extra hour (ahem, S4 finale) so we don't get the magical solution. C'mon, people, no need to thumb down that comment!
And don't get me going on what the sonic screwdriver has become. Back in the 70s it was a key for any door, and at a push its sonic waves could be used to disarm a minefield. Now, it's a catch-all resolution to most cliffhangers. Where's the tension when you've seen it used as a kind of gun against a cyberman, and for saving people trapped in cars, and somehow raising and lowering a pulley system? Imagine any threat at all, and you can now easily imagine it being solved with the magic wand.
This was my favourite of all the specials too, and I'd like to say the best acting I've seen from Tennant. I liked that he had that moment where he thought he was all powerful and then when he went too far (I also loved to Ood) because I think sometimes people forget that the Doctor isn't omnipotent. Also Adelaide was fantastic. So excited for (and yet dreading) the end.
I'm so excited to see in which ways RTD will pull every rabbit out of every hat and end his, Gardner's and Tennant's era with Doctor Who. Counting down the days as we speak.
I loved The Waters of Mars. Though, at the first trailer, I was thinking this was going to be some "generic" lost-in-space type episode. I'm delighted to see how wrong I was. It was so ominous and dark, and it makes me even more sad to see Tennant leave the show.
It's not that he isn't a good actor, but why should Ten be so scared of dying based on some psychic lady's vague prediction? He's right next to the TARDIS. He knows he would regenerate. They should have established his reason for believing psychic predictions in a past season. It would have made this more powerful and believable. I thought they were playing up the ratings grab a bit too much. The whole thing was just a big tease for "the end."
its not that he believes in psychic predictions but he's been getting a lot of messages that his time is coming to an end. The ood in s4 ep3 said "i fear your song is ending" - the soothsayers in pompeii (the ones that could only tell the truth said "it is returning out of the darkness" This thing has been foreshadowed for a long time.
I thought this was definitely the darkest episode of the series. But not because of the Flood or the fact that all those people were supposed to die, but because of the Doctor himself. He was downright creepy towards the end. I was cheering a lot of what he did, but then realized "uh, that was wrong." He was arrogant in a very dark and terrifying way.
But I agree, David Tennant is excellent. It'll be hard to top him as the Doctor.
I think you should have talked about the "have i gone too far??" a bit- how the end is so near, and he has become something like the master. he needs to be stopped; and i think its just cause if the crappiness of his life- everyone has left him, and he has noone to stop him- he needs a Donna, or a Rose. the results of that have been shown by journey's end and stuff...
hmmm maybe i should start my own vloggy stuff! its fun!
I love Doctor Who and this special was different but wonderful many wonderful moments funny, thrilling, and sad moments. His break down was just hard to watch, he's loosing it but great acting by David Tennant and very sad to see him go, but who knows there is always room for appearances. Time Lord Victorious!
like, everything that you said, i thought when watching it
also, this has nothing to do with dr who, but i just noticed that you look a lot like kayley from firefly, like....not so much in looks but in terms of the way you present your self...yeah just thought id add that since i know you like firefly :D
I can't say that I really enjoyed this episode that much. I love that doc who is finally back, and David tennant's acting was as usual amazing. But the plotline, and the whole "victorious" bit was just no good. The highlight of the episode for me was that water zombies appearing to do the thriller dance.
I really started to stress out when Brook started going into her house.. i thought she was going to shoot the doctor or something because he was too powerful and that whole seen where she chewed him out, was fantastic :D
I think Adelaide reminded me of an older Madame Pompadour (Girl in the Fire place, one of my all time favorite episodes) What do you think of Donna being in the Christmas Special? Do you think that seeing the Doctor again will be enough to trigger her memory block? Over all I really enjoyed this episode. I realized I had over thought it when I started avoiding puddles the next day.
I loved waters of mars! That being said I hated when the doctor got all power crazy! Maybe it's because this is the first eplsode I've seen when it came out (I just watched all 4 seasons a month ago) and nothing like this has ever had time to sink in. It annoyed me because he could have taken them to a different time let them live and it wouldn't have changed any thing. Oh well.
Also, thank kayley for getting me into doctor who. You mentioned it on 5AG and now I'm hooked!
I loved Waters of Mars....wow. It was an emotional roller coaster. I wanted to slap him for a little while there at the end when he got all power hungry. I mean it was cool for him to decide not to let time rule him but dang, cocky much? But then his breakdown....I just wanted to cry. So many emotions...and I agree 100%...Tennant is just a flawless, incredible actor. Matt Smith has BIG shoes to fill. I'm trying to remain optimistic but I just love Tennant way too much =/
That's pretty awesome. I just saw that on Broadway in August. Gooood times.
Ah but yes, topic at hand and such. Waters of Mars....the words brilliant and scary jump to mind. Definitely my favorite special of the 3 so far, and End of Time looks to be just as good if not better.
It's so fantastic to see an American Dr Who fan!

But the plotline, and the whole "victorious" bit was just no good. The highlight of the episode for me was that water zombies appearing to do the thriller dance.

Nothing about the complete change in the Doctor's character? He completely disregarded the laws of time!

I'm trying to remain optimistic but I just love Tennant way too much =/

ditto that is so exactly my reactions to the ep

Hopefully Smith will be different enough for people to not compare them in that way.

I wish David Tennat could have stayed for one more year, but I trust Stephen Moffat, so I'm sure Matt Smith will be great too.

This was certainly one of the freakiest episodes I've seen in a while.
I'm pretty sure this was a big push to be scarier mostly to lead up to the next episode which shall only prove to be epic.

I saw it there in February. :D

Well, it was alright. They should've expanded on the water thing.
