Lols, seiza position is as natural as can be for me. PROBABLY because whenever I go hunting, if we're not in our stands/not deer hunting, I sit like this most of the time. xD I never even knew that it was part of Kendo, however.
LMAO! I tried sitting in seiza before and I found it painful. I thought there was something wrong with me =P.
It seems if you're not used to this, you need to train to getting used to the weight and reduced circulation. I have huge beefy legs... looks like i need a lot of training before getting used to this position.
I find there's a nerve you can sit on that makes your legs go numb. Kind of hard to find but makes it easier. One guy in my Kendo class says he's rather to an hour of push-ups than sit five minutes in seiza, lol.
I tried this nearly every day for over a year with my yoga routine and made little progress, it still hurt a lot. Then I got a foam roller and after a couple months I can do it no problem. So check out foam rollers peeps u will love it
@Gatentsou101 yes you get used to it :) just sit like that increasingly more everyday (as long as you can) and you will get used to it in no time. like do 10 minutes the first day, 20 the next and so on. or how ever fast/slow you want to go with it.) but you WILL get used to it. jsut takes time
mmm, i was, like that other guy wandering about the benefits of this position, it helps to get the bones harder or something? cos I feel like Im about to break.
There is actually no reason to sit in this position tactically other than that it's easy to get to a standing position and there are sword techniques you can do from seiza, though you don't want to have to be there if you can avoid it. Most senseis won't force you to sit in seiza on a hard surface long unless they're really brutal to their students. We're only ever in seiza during the bowing procedures and then usually we're on our feet, though our dojo has mats on the floor that help.
It's mostly for the traditional aspect of it, most dojos like to keep with tradition where they can, in my experience. But the best I can tell you is that it might stretch out your thighs a little if you're really, really tight. It's a comfortable way to sit once you get used to it.
I don't actually do Kendo, I do another sword style but seiza is everywhere. :)
Good luck with your training and happy to help. :)
Sitting in seiza is the best way to stretch for seiza. Just try and sit in the position for as long as possible every day. It'll get easier over time.
in aikido i'd rather have ikkyo done on me 1000 times then sit in seiza for 5 mins(not that i ever do i usually switch to lotus after like 2 or 3 mins.)
I've been doing Kendo for about seven months, and I still find it very hard to sit in this position. I'm a very tall and big guy!! besides trying to lose weight, and practicing. I have a long way to go to be able to get past the pain!! Cheers great video
I can't sit in any kind of position. Be it lotus, seiza, or agura. The reason is because I have a severe medical condition that if I was to sit like that for too long I would develop a blood clot, and I don't need to tell you that a bc equals pretty much automatic death.
New Body's Gym on Aguacaliente Blvd. one block away from the old bull ring, in front of Big Boy Restaurant. We practice Tuesdays and Thuersdays from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, and yes there is Kendo in México, most of it is in the central states (DF, Edo. de México, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, etc.), there is also a Mexican Kendo Federation (FMK).
oh my god this fucking hurts dudes! just started aikidoschool.. training aikido like 2 times a day, every day for a whole year! and sitting like that is a pain! pure pain!
You should not lean forwards too much to avoid the pain but I know it hurts. So practice your seiza and gradually put weight on heels more. As you can see in the videos, you do not want to lean forwards or backwards too much.
Are the heels supposed to be supporting most of the weight? When I sit in seiza, my butt barely touches my heels. All the weight is supported behind my knees.
i have anther question, when sitting down on your heels, can you put your whole weight down? or should you try to lean alittle forward to use your knees more
I am not too sure how we should place anything else other than a sword. But I would also place a fan besides the left knee or in front of the knees neatly.
I am sure that we have a slightly different manner for a different situation.
Thanks, this really helped! I never knew it was actually a detailed way to sit >_>; What if your holding something else? Such as a fan, or something. Does it all have to be allined with the left knee?
this is hell for big legs or fat ppl.!

Is Seiza a Part of the Reiho in Kendo?
I mean, is it part of the Kyo-examination?

Really?
I've tried to sit in that position for some months and I'm getting used to it.
But I'm kinda disappointed to hear that it won't help my legs or something in any way.
Well, I'm better at Kendo now so I'll just keep up practicing.
Thank you for the info.

It is less painful when there is some distance between the knees.
