Amazing. When Christian Vander gets on that microphone, I'm overjoyed.

to herooftimex: You are so right . aside from being a visionary artist, Christian Vander is also a pretty good drummer. The great thing about Zappa was asa band leader he would frequently allow his band members some artistic license. Picture Vander in the late 70's Mothers with George Duke and Ruth Underwood. It boggles the imagination really!
@nojrevned Funny you say that because i was just thinking how Vander is to the drums what Zappa was to the guitar in many ways, neither of them could claim to be the best around but they played with such originality and passion that they are easily 2 of the most captivating musicians that ever were.
easy, we could say that this song is one of the most bizarre and extraordinary rock songs done, we could easily put together with great songs from rock ...
TO my opinion, one of the most beautiful piece they ever played... And 30 years later, it is still the same thrill, the same feelings.... I will never forget MAGMA!
That's show bizeness. Chapeau, l'artiste !
Superb. Typical Magma brilliance. Never seen them look so colourful, nor Klaus Blasquiz so smart! Great rendition of 'Hhai', although I prefer the version on the Magma Live' album of 1975 where Didier Lockwood's violin playing adds so much to the overall sound.
this song is on their last album emehntehtt-re...how can this be, this is a new album and..this was recorded in 1978...but who cares, i know magma only for few months and i am already a hugh fan..

gloriously mental esp, at the 4 min. mark just as lunatic jester opens up on the Moog synth...fuck i love this band so much..oh and nice Tuxedo Balasquiz!
je me souviens avoir eu une discussion avec Blasquiz lors d'un concert juste avant la parution de 2001°c, ou il me disait que Magma avait envoyé le double Kobaïa à Zappa dès l'enregistrement pour en avoir un commentaire ou une appréciation et que Zappounet n'avait jamais répondu;
well this is enegmatic. did anyone see that vander play in the same tradition like bach-coltrane -wagner -orff. a true genuiene composer, performer,- and madman -like a few artist before him.his performance continue the shamanistic offer over the centuries. truly trancedental, unique and personal.
may he often sound like and oddball- this is for what he belongs.köntharkösz- a vision rooted in our belongings.
Two huge egos, and they're like oil and water. I think Zappa would have had great disdain for Magma, as he seemed to for most contemporary bands. Also, as much as I love Magma (and Zappa), I doubt if CV would even have passed Zappa's audition. My prediction is that the two wouldn't last 5 minutes in the same room with one another.
That's true, but Beefheart was a old chum. And I've heard (and maybe you have too) so so many sneering comments by Zappa on such a wide array of topics. My guess is that Zappa would think Vander is a pretentious asshole (and a French one, t'boot!. But hell, I'll bet there's somebody out there right now that happens to know exactly what FZ thought of Magma. It's also highly possible that I'm talking out my ass! :)
In France...I think that might sum up FZ's opinion. ;o)
I doubt he would sneer at his originality, or his drumming, which is crazy as hell.
I turned a friend on to Vander and Magme, a lot younger than me, a trained percussionist, he can't believe how crazy this stuff is. He just says, "I checked that Magma out" and starts laughing. I think it might have warped the guy, he's a huge FZ fan, but Vander might be beyond FZ.
To begin with, Beefheart was way more interesting than Zappa. Don Van Vliet was/is an artist and poet and Zappa was snidely funny and "look how clever I am" showy. That's fine if you're into that sort of thing - to each their own. Magma definitely sounds like Zappa but Magma seems much more pure (and gutsy) in some ways regardless of tastes.
I don't get a pretentious vibe from Vander, he loves music. I was listening to some Otis Redding the onther day and heard some of Vander's stuff in it, i see why he has that song Otis, I see why he did the high pitched squealing, Otis did it himself.
FZ would appreciate a keyboardist who stapled puffy pink hands to his shirt, I am sure.
In one interview, Vander offered the word "disdain" as a description of Zappa. He didn't mean that he was disdainful of FZ but that FZ's output mainly expressed disdain. Vander's vision, OTOH, while arguably bizarre, is very committed and idealistic.
Never thought I'd see footage of Magma live, and here they are in '78 performing one of my favorite tracks! Wish the sound were a little louder though; this band needs to be *blasted*.
That's a terrible comparison! I just finished listening to that "Sola Scriptura and Beyond live DVD trailer" here on youtube and it to me shows no similarities with Vander's way of composing.
I didn't mean to compare the sound, etc. But both have the same philosophy of life. Magma invented the Zehul progressive, whit Christian philosophy. So, in this way I am comparing. Because most of old progressive bands, had new age,or agnostic way of thinking .But I totaly agree with you that there is no comparision. Maybe Universe Zero is "better" if I wanted to compare the sound. But it is a matter of taste.
That's definitely not Guy Khalifia in this clip. He's much skinnier than Klaus and at least on the Bobino 81, he's clean shaven and looks more like an escapee from Rocky Horror. :-)
I have this on a bootleg VHS. Who is the lineup here? I can pick out Christian and the Valkrie herself Tauhd Zaia (aka Stella), but I'm not sure about the rest of the band. I assume that the other male vocalist is Klaus, and I think one of the other girl singers is Liza Deluxe (who is on teh Bobino 81 video), but not sure about anyone else.
About the only Magma piece I have been able to get into. Do I detect a bit of Demetrio Stratos influence in the vocals?

laflib 2 years ago
laflib 2 years ago

Seb8367 2 years ago 2

cheekymonkey1979 2 years ago
taila1976 2 years ago
cantabile03 2 years ago 2

je me souviens avoir eu une discussion avec Blasquiz lors d'un concert juste avant la parution de 2001°c, ou il me disait que Magma avait envoyé le double Kobaïa à Zappa dès l'enregistrement pour en avoir un commentaire ou une appréciation et que Zappounet n'avait jamais répondu;

well this is enegmatic. did anyone see that vander play in the same tradition like bach-coltrane -wagner -orff. a true genuiene composer, performer,- and madman -like a few artist before him.his performance continue the shamanistic offer over the centuries. truly trancedental, unique and personal.
may he often sound like and oddball- this is for what he belongs.köntharkösz- a vision rooted in our belongings.

Don't even talk about it. It would be more fatal than the LHC.
TavosMustaine 3 years ago
Two huge egos, and they're like oil and water. I think Zappa would have had great disdain for Magma, as he seemed to for most contemporary bands. Also, as much as I love Magma (and Zappa), I doubt if CV would even have passed Zappa's audition. My prediction is that the two wouldn't last 5 minutes in the same room with one another.
tedperkins 3 years ago
FZ appreciated weirdness and strangeness.
I mean, Captain Beefheart? Who is weirder than that guy?
HollywoodWags 3 years ago
That's true, but Beefheart was a old chum. And I've heard (and maybe you have too) so so many sneering comments by Zappa on such a wide array of topics. My guess is that Zappa would think Vander is a pretentious asshole (and a French one, t'boot!. But hell, I'll bet there's somebody out there right now that happens to know exactly what FZ thought of Magma. It's also highly possible that I'm talking out my ass! :)
tedperkins 3 years ago
In France...I think that might sum up FZ's opinion. ;o)
I doubt he would sneer at his originality, or his drumming, which is crazy as hell.
I turned a friend on to Vander and Magme, a lot younger than me, a trained percussionist, he can't believe how crazy this stuff is. He just says, "I checked that Magma out" and starts laughing. I think it might have warped the guy, he's a huge FZ fan, but Vander might be beyond FZ.
HollywoodWags 3 years ago 2
To begin with, Beefheart was way more interesting than Zappa. Don Van Vliet was/is an artist and poet and Zappa was snidely funny and "look how clever I am" showy. That's fine if you're into that sort of thing - to each their own. Magma definitely sounds like Zappa but Magma seems much more pure (and gutsy) in some ways regardless of tastes.
JIOREO 3 years ago
I don't get a pretentious vibe from Vander, he loves music. I was listening to some Otis Redding the onther day and heard some of Vander's stuff in it, i see why he has that song Otis, I see why he did the high pitched squealing, Otis did it himself.
FZ would appreciate a keyboardist who stapled puffy pink hands to his shirt, I am sure.
HollywoodWags 3 years ago
In one interview, Vander offered the word "disdain" as a description of Zappa. He didn't mean that he was disdainful of FZ but that FZ's output mainly expressed disdain. Vander's vision, OTOH, while arguably bizarre, is very committed and idealistic.

Neal morse. His new job Sola Scriptura. Is very good. It has the same line of thinking .
mitube1979 4 years ago
That's a terrible comparison! I just finished listening to that "Sola Scriptura and Beyond live DVD trailer" here on youtube and it to me shows no similarities with Vander's way of composing.
RamaLamaMagnus 3 years ago
I didn't mean to compare the sound, etc. But both have the same philosophy of life. Magma invented the Zehul progressive, whit Christian philosophy. So, in this way I am comparing. Because most of old progressive bands, had new age,or agnostic way of thinking .But I totaly agree with you that there is no comparision. Maybe Universe Zero is "better" if I wanted to compare the sound. But it is a matter of taste.
