  • that's how most people dance to house all over... that's just house period... i'm from cali been dancing for 15 years and that's how we've been dancing out here with no formal training videos and it looks pretty much the same ol' "freestyle"

  • tooooomaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • yo... that shit was off the hook! Big Leaf and Terry are some the main reasons why I still get inspired to keep on dancing! Much Love!!!!! Shabazz (ZuluNation)

  • The name of the song is "Sucre" by John Tejada

  • i want the name of the first song

    thanks

    very nice video

  • Question to all you house fans.

All I ever hear is NYC style this or NYC that..

I thought House originated in Chicago?? That being said, where are the Chicago House style dancers? And why do I not see anything other than NYC style?

  • House* music from Chicago, House* Dance mostly took form in NY (from what i know of the scene)...You'll still see remnants of House*Dance in Chicago, but in the form of juke, jig and footworkin.

  • yeah, coming from a guy from chicago, you might want to check out full effects they have alot of chapters but more importantly they are known for showing chicago house style which as romanticconfusion said before is of juke, jig, and fast footworkin' they were also on abdc.

but all in all, every area has their own way to house. i mean theres remnants but its not seen very often.

  • No, I think you might be slighly mistaken comparing footworkin' and especially juke to House dance. Juke is simple glides, heel-toe footwork along with some waves. Footwork is basically taking the top-rock and up-rock off the Bboy and making that a fast movement foot art all in itself. If you look at Brooklyn Terry -- house dance looks nothing like Footworkin or Juke-- hit me back. I want to make sure I am grasping this right.

  • TOp Rock and Up Rock are a bit different, the footwork on display here reminds me more of Jazz Steps (Tap and Soft shoe) and Latin Steps... Top rock and Up rock are a bit less intricate... very little heel toe in Top or Up rock which also very different from one another... I think you mean top rock (the shit cats do before they go down to the groud) while uprock is more like a mock battle...

  • The term house music is from chicago from the term Wherehouse music which was later shortened to house music. But that style of dance music as a club music was pioneered in NYC - the Dj at the WHerehouse was from the NYC house scene.

The dance on the vid is both Chicago style at points and NYC style but it's mainly Caleaf style and Terry Style to be honest.

  • hice man

  • Love the classic house steps by BigLeaf. Reminds of the good ol' days of housin' in NYC.

  • Can anyone out there tell where Caleaf is teaching house dance lessons in NYC? Thank you.

  • that was sick. much respect.

    *DeEnO

  • Any ID on the FIRST TRACK ? ! ?

Caleaf - Ain't seen you since we wrecked it in TOKYO !

  • what's the track that starts when brooklyn terry drops and the lights go out and hes does his solo

  • Its a radiohead track redone by SA-RA the name is In Limbo

  • whats the name of the first track.... can anybody tell me.. Cheers!

  • Terry always great to see the footwork. Caleaf the 8th wonder on the dance floor. Cats are making the floor sweat...LOL.

  • WHOA WHOA...proton1...i cant believe he came outta pocket...land of the haters or what?

  • Too many tricks to be taken seriously. You wanna play the court jester, you had best be a Gene Kelly, Fred Aistaire or better.

  • can you do better ??? if not... SHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Best response i've seen. No cussin, just class comeback.

  • Proton just so YOU know, Gene & Fred were watching the Nicholas Bros & some of the other melan8d folk put it down hardcore. They just did a whitewashed interpretation of what they saw.

  • 'tricks'? you say that so condescendingly, so i'm assuming you're a more seasoned house dancer than these cats or you know a lot of ones who are better. feel free to name some others b/c Fred and Gene didn't know house.

court jester? so anyone who dances is a court jester? i guess you like to bottle up all your emotion and pose as a wallflower then. or is it b/c you dont like it when other people can really let go and have fun?

  • Twenty years in the Toronto underground. I bo back far enough to a time when cats danced without labelling it "house dance." No labels meant we enjoyed ourselves outside all frameworks, moved with fluidity and in an automatic manner govered solely by "the gods."

I'm also from a time where everyone was considered equal and no prophets were elevated. There were good dancers, but there were no heros and people otherwise elevated to be spokespeople for some ideal dance as it seems to happen today.

  • There were no conventions, no "battles", we didn't call ourselves b-boys or anything else. We didn't strive to learn "The Jack", "Dolphin Dives" or anything within some spiritually narrowing framework -- we simply moved as the music governed we should, and with as little as our own conscious input as possible. No labels means no limits, and no limits mean total freedom on the dancefloor, man.

If cats today divorced themselves from all the labels and egotistical "battles" and simply danced..

  • ..they'd be able to tap into the true spirit of what it means to be "down" in the house scene.

  • Beautiful.

  • battling has spawned from the more egocentric viewpoint of the dancer trying to prove something. the focus then moves towards the self and away from the vibe of the group. that's why the group vibe is virtually non-existant now. the pendulum will swing back in the other direction though - i guarantee that. the last 10-13 yrs have been a downfall.

  • with so few dancers left in the scene today, it's nice that they're still representing. though whether or not someone was from that time you mention, or not, they can still feel it within on that same level - but it is rare. i totally agree about no limtations, and for me that also means no limits on freedom of musical creation, as any form of pure, deep hypnotic music can bring out limitless dancing. dancing will expand when the music expands.

  • well, now you're talking. i agree with all of that, and also that all the dance scenes today cant be compared to when they first originated. pure reaction to the music - painting a visual image of the sounds with your body - that's what it's all about. as far as this vid, it really doesnt do these guys justice. they're a 100% better in person, when there's a vibe. they weren't in the zone in this vid, and were focused too much on a 'stage performance' but both these guys have great footwork.

  • Don't know you guys' forms that well, but I'm just getting up on appreciating the house Variants. One thing that baffles me as I try to follow you guys' convo (dnt knw this stuff at all) is the way ppl differentiate footworking, juke, house, New Style as completely different dances.

I see the same thing in poppin/boogstyles. Cats from Brooklyn act like Flexn is not popping.

Do you guys feel like the dances are so different they aren't related?

  • hey, sorry for the delay. all those styles you mention are diff dances and were responses to diff music styles. chicago footwork is way diff from house footwork b/c it's totally diff music. juke is basically ass shaking, and house has a lot of diff styles b/c there are so many diff styles of house music spanning a few decades. and popping is diff from flexing - again b/c it's reaction to 2 diff kinds of music/rhythms.

  • on the surface it looks very similar but listen closer to the music and the movements in sync with the music and you'll see it clearer. the electronic 'clap' sound produces the core of the popping movement. those reggae flexin beats dont have that clap. diff styles of music will never create the same style of dance.
