@TwoDaystoAlaska it is like that because in the translation notice this is at the end of the sentence just like where kore-de is placed. If it was the other way the translation would read more like " Is this yours?" Where kore-de is changes the translation.

Nicely done. It is all clear. Well, it was all clear until "anata-no hako-wa kore-de su ka" @ 3:00. It just blows mind. Why is anata-no set first? How do the words relate to each other here? Why does it translate as "is your box this"? Why couldn't it be "is this box yours"?

@PastMilleniumMan well, that's how the japanese sentence structure is. come to think of it, its almost a reversed version of the direct english translation counterpart.

@mrrowrowrow Thank you. Looks like possessive words (-no) are always set before words, which possession they determine. Like, in "my book" "watashi-no" will always be right before "hon".

@CarlosAvilla Yeah, you're supposed to get the first part down first, then the exercise is practice, you can pause right after each sentence in japanese until you have deciphered it, then unpause to see if you're right.

I thought desu was one word... I think it's is simpler if you consider it one word. the kore wa pen-de arimasen stuff confuzzled me...so it is not one word if you look at it in negative form....I guess? ( exuse me if I'm wrong I'm still learning too)

i find it quite complicated to construct a sentense mainly because of its syntax. i mean you should always recognise the subject and the predicate complement in order to determine where ''wa'' and ''de'' shall be put.

however it was only natural that there would be difficulties in learning a foreign language...

Yea, i think "watashi no hako wa kore desu" is right, though I think "kore wa watashi no hako desu" is used more often. If you wanna emphasize "This is MY BOX." use the first sentence. If you wanna emphasize "THIS is my box." use the second sentence. Hoped that helped.

Hahah, I got it! I mean those last sentences, first you normally read everything before "wa" while keeping in mind that "no" after personal pronoun like "anata" or "watashi" is translated like "yours" or "mine" (always). Then you use "su"(is) from the end and then you read the rest in the middle.

So:

1) read "wa" part in the beggining

2) read "su" part in the end (usually its just "is")

3) read "de" part in the middle
