What's the range on this? The simulation shows that a 747 has to make it near an opponent's missile launch site to shoot down an ICBM in boost phase. I don't see opponents letting 747s fly around anywhere that this laser could reach a missile in boost phase.
Anyone know how USAF is planning on getting this in range of a target? And (perhaps more difficult) keeping it from being shot down? Because the biggest gun on the field is a lead magnet.
apparently its got a range of several hundred kilometres and so they would fly this thing over friendly airspace and target the missile while it's still over enemy territory.. check youtube for a future weapons video of this... pretty awesome weapon though ey
Relatively easy to get something in target range since the laser (currently) is supposedly ~60 miles. That is well out of range of any conventional missiles (hellfire/hydra) and WELL out of range of ANY conventional mounted cannon.

lastly, the last plan I heard from the obama admin (gates) is to shelve the project once the shootdown is done. This was finished not too long ago.
Northrop provided the laser, boeing provided the 747 and Lockmart provided the beam control system.

i've heard its 300-900km depending on the thickness of the missile as well as atmosphere effects like couds etc
cannot be fired at missiles past a ceartain flight phase somewhere between right after launch and entry into space or above a ceartain speed
theyre making a 20km range one for burning the whels off cars etc
