I've had a Mirena in for 4 and half years due to fibroids and the past couple of weeks had such bad abdominal and lower back pain which is much worse sitting which has made me think the pain could be the IUD.
omg!!!!!! i have been thinking about getting it taken out. i have had it almost two months. i am losing hair, gaining weigt, have moodswings, cramps, spotting, looks like im prenant, joint pain...so much. and now this?!?!?!?! girls....save yourself a lot of pain and suffering and get on the pill.
I just had to remove my Iud today cause it sliped out of my uterus.... I'm reading all these comments that the doctor could be negligent?? You see..I've never had kids..the doc's office is telling me that it happens with women in my case
When I asked my doctor what side effects the IUD has. She said "none" She never tell me it might slip out or embed into my tissue until I did a research on the net that some women had such a terrible experience.
Who knows, but it's happened to me! I had mine placed a year ago, and just found out on Friday that it has punctured through my uterus and is free floating in my abdomen. I have Surgery this Thursday to have it removed. Not sure of damage exactly until the surgeon goes in.
All I know is I'm suing the SHIT out of my doctor from last year!!!! GAH. Was told that the only time this happens is if it was placed incorrectly to begin with. Like, he had to of punctured me while he was placing it.
oh MY GOSH!!! Could this be Mirena???

I see you still had to enlarge the incision, since you took the bowel out for open repair.

Have you been using Mirena? My doctor suggested me using Paragard cos it has less side effects.

How common is it for an IUD to perforate the uterus and harm other parts of the body?

EXTREMELY rare. It's usually due to poor technique or inexperience.
