@vwabi If you were familiar with the software side of interfacing with all of those components, you'd know that supporting all of those different components is a support nightmare. If it worked for you, great, but I feel sorry for the people who shed blood to make it work. There's an easier way.
@LukeBlueFive building a computer is not hard. If your one of the people that can not do the advanced version of lego that is building a PC, you kinda deserve to pay extra. But even that has a limit, you know when your paying in excess of $1000 in mark-up, and that same company also infers how stupid you are every 5 seconds.
@blake3443 I've built my own computer, so I know it's not that difficult to do. After trying out both ways (and hearing horror stories from those older than I am), I decided Macintosh systems are more productive (less down time). You get what you pay for (and last time I checked, OS X doesn't ask you if you *really* want to open an application every time you open an application).
@LukeBlueFive neither does windows, it does ask that the admin gives permission to install things and open applications that require elevated privileges. if it bother's you it takes about 5 seconds to disable. and how do you get what you pay for? paying for 25c/GB versus the exact same HDD being 4c/GB? Using a limited and closed source OS? tell me please elaborate.
@blake3443 First off, I shouldn't have to disable it (Windows is showing its lack of security by enabling it by default). Second, any hard drive that would work in a PC (laptop or desktop) will work in a Mac (of the respective type); this is also true of memory. Third, Windows is about as closed source OS as you can get (OS X is built on Unix, whose inner workings are well-known). It's so closed, in fact, that my operating systems professor couldn't even cover Windows.
1: choices are a good thing, having the option to change that setting is a good thing, whining about being given the option to disable shows your knowledge on this topic (the matter of it being enabled by default is actually a good thing as 99% of computer users are very bad at identifying legitimate software versus malicious).
@blake3443 I never said choices weren't a good thing. It shows poor design to routinely ask users such an inane question (and I never saw it ask me if I didn't want to see that popup for that application ever again). I think I know the setting you are referring to, and if so, altering it would make my computer less secure (since any program could run with admin privileges without my permission). Why can't it tell the user just opened it? OS X just asks the first time a program is started.
@LukeBlueFive It does not show poor design, the average computer user is a fracking retard when dealing with any more technical then double clicking, what this does is make sure they don't screw things up multiple times.
And you can set UAC to only inform you the first time.
@blake3443 I completely agree with you: Windows treats its users as if they were the stupidest people on earth. Just another reason I don't like Microsoft. They seem quite consistent, though, especially with their popups. Instead of assuming I'm competent enough to check a box and not see it again, I have to manually edit a setting. Why does Microsoft even let us turn on computers running Windows? Maybe *they* should tell us when to turn them on...
@LukeBlueFive Apple is also big on the treating user like idiots. the difference is if your not, with windows you can easily change it, if your on an mac your kinda boned unless the console gives you one.
2: Yes, I am well away of that, however, the drives that are included in default configurations (or by adding/modifying the default configuration), are ridiculously expensive, they must be made of gold to justify the price. Buying a drive from a third party then installing that defeats the purpose of getting an Apple (and is still more expensive as you cannot order the Apple without these components, in the end you still spend a large amount of money).
@blake3443 Every Apple comes with a hard drive included in its price. If you want a bigger one, you'd likely get it from the cheapest seller, which likely won't be where you got your computer. Plus, if you were going to get an external drive anyway, this point is completely moot.
@LukeBlueFive sorry how is it a moot point? I want a 2tb drive. I have two options with apple, have them put one 2tb HDD in, for $300 (that is the 150 included 1tb plus the 150 for the upgrade), or spend the $150 on the included hard drive and then an extra 50ish at the local store, total 200ish. Now if I where yo purchase a HDD from the local store and not pay for the included one that would be about 80-90 total. how do you see this a s moot point?]
@blake3443 It's almost as if you're complaining you can't buy a car without an engine (since you can get if for cheaper than at the dealership). Apple only sells its computers in working order, with a working OS. Show me a PC retailer that will sell you a computer (the whole PC, not just the parts) without a hard drive. Yeah, neither does Apple.
@blake3443 Nope. I'm confused how a PC lacking a hard drive, and therefore unable to boot, can be considered a computer. Apple sells computers, not shells, not parts.
@LukeBlueFive The idea, is that you the consumer are a big boy, who can make their own decisions. for example, if i was getting a computer for a HTPC (shuttle make some good systems for this), Do i need TB of storage? no. I would like a silent HDD though, so I would get a 60gb SSD and call it quits, and just stream my movies off the server.
@blake3443 Also, looking at Shuttle's website... it looks as if you can't buy one of their computers without a hard drive, either, and the price for a 2 TB is $145 (Apple allows you to upgrade to 2 TB for $150). Talk about shooting a company for five bucks...
@LukeBlueFive um, talking about the barebones, they don't come with a HDD. Okay just checked, The US site is the only one where you can by full Computers, normally you by them missing the ram, cpu, and HDD, everything else is included normally.
3: The key point was limited. For example: you going to play X game/Install X program on release? no. as 99% of software developed for Windows wont run on Apple products. Also OS X is just as closed source as windows. Apple's Darwin core is open source (but they go out of their way to make it hard to use, it is well known that they obfuscate the code), and their APIs are all proprietary. Also MS has many courses on windows, maybe your professor just isn't good.
@blake3443 All Macintoshes made from 2006 onwards have had Intel processors, so they are x86. OS X has been x86-compatible for the last four major releases. I have a MacBook that was made then, and it can boot into Windows and run applications/games just fine. I don't see how you can say Windows is any better in the proprietary software department (heck, Bill Gates *created* that term). My professor couldn't cover it because we have no *proof* that it works the way they claim.
@LukeBlueFive so... wait, your claiming that you can use windows. and then not using any of the apple software (I don't think they make their own EFI, might be wrong on this but if i remember correctly austek or sumthing like that does) (I am assuming you mean not using bootcamp.
Go look at the bit-tech.net review on macbook performance in games versus the same spec machine in windows.
never said they where any better, but in terms of companies that i trust, MS is much higher then Apple.
@blake3443 I'm confused by most of your first paragraph, but I primarily use bootcamp to run Windows. You also seem to be under a common misunderstanding: Microsoft does not make PC hardware (they make XBoxes and peripherals, though). Therefore, Apple has computer gaming specs, Microsoft does not. Also, most Macintoshes cannot be used for high-end gaming (Mac Pros might be the only exception). Why do you trust Microsoft when it has the worst track record of *any* OS provider?
1: Windows vista SP1 64bit and later had native support for EFI, in other words you don't need boot camp.
2: I am well aware of that, However seriously go look at bit-tech review, they did it when steam started the whole we are going to run steam on Mac also.
3: MS... worst record.... If this was the 80/90's i'd agree with you. sadly this is not. go check your facts again. Bill Gates: giving 90% of his wealth to charity. Steve Jobs: die of cancer in his house made of gold bricks.
@blake3443 I'll stick with my ability to dual-boot, thank you very much. I'll look at the bit-tech reviews when I get the time. However, the reviews I've read have consistently marked the Macbook as a very good buy. Microsoft is well-known for buying out competitors, and has been successfully sued repeated for monopoly and other violations. Bill Gates gives a lot of his money away to organizations to support his agendas (abortion, fighting global-warming, etc.)
@blake3443 Steve Jobs helped created a computer for the common man. He saw the computer as an appliance, something that anyone could use (something Bill Gates certainly does not believe). Apple has a very good record of reducing its impact on the environment (eliminating lead, mercury, and other toxic chemicals from its products). However, we are not comparing men, but companies. Either way, I don't see much contest.
It's not the fact that Apple uses components from Nvidia, AMD and Intel, the big thing is that they build their software around what components are in the computer.
@Rubr1k but that means its really hard to expand, and thats why a lot of programs can't work with mac and also why game developers just skip them over.
@TheStickFiguer I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. The way I see it, Macintoshes have X amount of possible configurations per computer, while there are virtually ENDLESS amounts of PC configurations.
So they say that Macs are better than Pcs have you seen anyone play a real game on a mac. Seriously Have you seen anyone pwning an other human being in a FPS on a mac I don't think so.
PCs are definitely the way to go. as they offer a wide variety of choice like in other consumer products. with macs you are stuck with a few models instead of a thousand of varieties. however, the level of hw/sw integration is very poor from PC vendors as they just slap on their crap on top of windows. the result in an unholy mess of bloatware and buggy software. given the propriatory nature of laptops buying a mac makes sense. pcs rule the desktop though.
i actually kindda make sense. pc is good (well could be better at times) but mac always keep making all these commercials to say its fault this, fault that, so, how about this time, it IS mac's fault? we didn't mention how apple's products are HIGHLY overpriced and does little. at least no games HAHA
apple don't make shit, they certify, when is the last time apple made a graphics card, speaking of parts coming from a bunch of different places, xenon anyone?
The processors are the same, Dell has 1 more GB of memory, and the video card on the Dell is a nVidia GeForce GT 220, 1024MB whereas the video card on the Mac Pro was NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB.
All the specs were the same.
Studio XPS by Dell $1,089
Mac Pro $2,499.00
I really don't think customer service and product quality is worth more than twice the price...
Who cares????! Mac or PC...macs cost more so people like to feel 'special' because they can PAY MORE! STUCK-UP'S!! SO WHAT! When computers finally get 'Photonic-circuitry' inside them this new generation of computers is gonna BLOW AWAY ALL MACS AND PC's!! These machines will be able to 'storyboard' & animatics & animate & And fully 'render' a movie like Toy Story #3....in a week! (7 days) NOW WHUT?! Can U say "Baby-Supercomputer"!! ( 30 to 90 cores)
haha what a joke made from same company all the hardware and software from same company. processors from intel and video card from nvidia and if u don't have windows the graphics card has almost no use
wrong. apple products are a frankenstien mix of parts. why do you think apple makes their products nearly impossible to disassemble.. they dont want you to see. i opened up a 30gb ipod video and the hard drive had a toshiba logo on it.
"whos hardware & operating system are all made my the same people" apple was under fire at a point for that, they said it was wa monoply, personally i agree with them.
id like to think the game argument is great...as im a PC gamer....but since torrents took over.......most of the game developers moved off from PC to the consoles...which sucks...so the game argument for PCs over Macs is kinda getting weaker by the day no?
Of course im generalizing...so yeah exceptions WOW, MMORPGS okay but still compared to a few years ago, gaming on the PC is sadly soooo not the same.
the problem is that it is way to expensive to buy original games, i really wished i could afford them but it's out of question... so, pirating is the only way
there are more pc exclusives now then ever b4 in the history of pc gaming
devs are marketing consoles cuse its ezer for them they can charge more and they can produce shovelware and the dumb ass console crowed will suck it up like air
Agree. You can't really compare PC and Mac. That's like comparing Volvo and Ferrari. Volvo build family cars, and Ferrari build sport cars. They are not really the same. They even have differed product ideas.
For my gaming needs I use PC. But at work I actually use Mac
'unlike mac whoes operating system and hardware are made by the same people'
Apple makes your operating system, Intel Makes your processor, Nvidia makes your graphics card...unless you have one of the ones with a non-intel procesor, or another brand video card...wait, what part of the average mac is designed and manufactored by apple again? The plastic casing right?
I don't think the point of the commercial was to advertise that it's all made by one company because that means nothing. The point was that Apple can integrate the hardware and software together better than the other vendors.
@shadowlock The point of the advertisment was to say Mac's hardware and software are all made by Apple so it works so well. That is untrue as it uses Intel's Core i processors and Nvidia's Graphics among many other things.
Furthermore how can Apple integrate the hardware and software better than other vendors when the stuff comes from all different places just like PCs??
Is there proof Macs are better made? Last time I checked Apple was forth in reliability after Asus, Toshiba and Sony.
@shadowlock integrating hardware and software is not that difficult. the only remotely hard part about having parts from different companies is finding the proper drivers and making sure that all the parts (ie RAM, CPU, GPU, mobo) fit together. and in the case of prebuilt computers, the company that built it takes care of all those problems in advance.
also, if the point was hardware/software integration they would've said so, instead of ripping on PC for having components from multiple brands
@shadowlock actually i remember reading somewhere that the screens on macbooks were made by either LG or HP, can't remember which. The superdrives are actually matshita drives, which i'm pretty sure are made by panasonic. The webcam is developed by apple, but it's not a particularly great webcam in the first place. and the apple keyboard and mouse are just a keyboard and a mouse, it's not very hard to integrate it with the software well.
@shadowlock At least the people at the Genius Bar fix problems in your Mac even if it's an NVIDIA issue or Intel issue, instead of most warranty repair services for PCs that go "There's nothing we can do for you!"
@IanIrvin It's not quite made by the same people, that is true, but unlike on Windows, on a Mac, the operating system has been made to run on that specific hardware that they get from Intel, Nvidia etc. And also, in some cases, it's built specific for the Mac.
@IanIrvin Oh like Microsoft designs it's own PC on which material to use, screen size, etc... Don't be silly, Apple or for that matter no comp company is in that field of making screens and all, otherwise it would be ridiculously expensive.. the point is they decide the software and hardware..... unlike Microsoft who licenses it to third party vendors
Pls try to understand what "hardware" in this context means :)
@shadowlock LOL thats barely of any importance. The CPU and GPU are probably the two most important components and both of which are designed and manufactured by companies other than Apple. You list the friggin webcam, mouse and keyboard. -__- The screen, keyboard and mouse is interchangable and none of the Macs require it as there are many alternatives.
Also Apple did not manufacture any of the "components" you listed. Most are made in Hon Hai Precision Industry Corporation Factory in China.
@shadowlock omg what ever would we do without dvd drives from a company that isn't experienced in making them and a mouse with one button, the universe would surely end. oh and the built in isight camera, shit carl zeiss optics got nothing on you, you just put them to shame.
@shadowlock isnt the keyboard and mighty mouse considered perhipeals( or howerver you spell it)? But not many of the key hardware in a computer is apple made and i diagree with you that they manage to integate the sofware better... Yes they do it better than a lot of the crappy pc makers, but there r many good pc makers out there who does just as good of a job as apple for a bit less money.
@shadowlock so....just the peripheral devices...wow...that explains a lot because those are the things that make a computer run better...no the other "useless" stuff mentioned above
@IanIrvin apple makes there processors you can get a cheaper cruddy intel processor mac and all mac computers after snow leopard have mac graphic's cards
@nickalexrock Apple has not made their own processors since 2005. I literally just went to the mac website to "customize my mac" and wudya, know, nvidia video card...mac users are so clueless.
@IanIrvin that processor still goes in there computers it gets upgraded every year and apple has a partnership with nvidia they own OWN parts of nvidia
@IanIrvin apple is saying they put it together, so it's better coded and integrated, unlike Windows which has to be written to work with everything, so integration would take up your entire harddrive.
@IanIrvin The point of the commercial is that its much better built than any other pc theres no argument and if you actually want windows (Which is insane to begin with) it runs better than any other pc on a mac
@TRBAbridged for an experiment to raise our grades in TIA we tested three computers on a small budget we tested my friends mac and my old non mac computer (both his mac and my old non mac computer are the same price) The results were interesting, my PC was more efficient and generally better in speed, graphics, processing capabilities, and of course in gaming ability. Now. I would like to see you counter my experiments results with proof of your own. my new comp is still a PC
Apple doesn't actually manufacture the parts, they pick and choose parts and design the machine to work with the operating system.
PCs are basically hardware parts just slapped together. OEM's don't really take the time to take in accounts on how Windows might behave because of certain hardware brand.
'PCs are basically hardware parts just slapped together'
Actually, PC hardware must be compatible with each other, and drivers must be written to so that it will work correctly in Windows. OEM hardware is generally the same as retail hardware, just without all the extras(manuals, cables, etc).
Plus, ability to pick and choose parts is generally considered an advantage for PCs, because the same hardware setup can be gotten for a much lower price, as well as the ability to build your own.
Yeah, but can they truly know what brand parts aren't gonna end up making their PC shit brown Zune bricks to death? That's a factor to take in. If you want a good PC, then I imagine it might have to be a custom-built ground up that doesn't run any version of Windows.
I will assume that you mean Windows when you say pc. Now, add into the video games the productivity software(Excel alone is considered the best spreadsheat software even by the open source community), the ability to build your own for much cheaper than storebought, third party software(at every electronics store, and is not just limited to games), the ability to run a multitude of operatings systems using a multitude of bootloaders, and the wide variety of cases, if you want a 'pretty' case.
Yeah, and to bad there is competition so you can get hardware and software that is cheaper (A LOT CHEAPER) but just as good as the more expensive stuff
Thunderwing, with a little hack any Intel Core based PC can run OSX as well. The hardware is the same, Apple just adds a little unlocking chip that says this is mac compatible hardware to the OS. Remove that bit of code and it'll run fine.
Then just don't go blaming Apple because your Hackintosh started to crap up. You're not gonna get any support line from them anyways. Basically, running a Hackintosh means "you're on your own".
In that case, you're gonna have to bend yourself inside-out to give the amount of quality to Hackintosh users that Apple Mac users have enjoyed for years.
Mac is the BEST because it runs EVERYTHING. OSX, Vista, XP, many flavors of Linux, Solaris, even Windows 3.1 in a Parallels VM. Even Mac OS 9 in a Sheepshaver VM.
Wait did Mac just get 0wn3d??????

It's not the fact that Apple uses components from Nvidia, AMD and Intel, the big thing is that they build their software around what components are in the computer.
Rubr1k 5 months ago
@Rubr1k but that means its really hard to expand, and thats why a lot of programs can't work with mac and also why game developers just skip them over.

PCs are definitely the way to go. as they offer a wide variety of choice like in other consumer products. with macs you are stuck with a few models instead of a thousand of varieties. however, the level of hw/sw integration is very poor from PC vendors as they just slap on their crap on top of windows. the result in an unholy mess of bloatware and buggy software. given the propriatory nature of laptops buying a mac makes sense. pcs rule the desktop though.

i compared the two.
A Dell XPS vs. a Mac Pro

Apple makes your operating system, Intel Makes your processor, Nvidia makes your graphics card...unless you have one of the ones with a non-intel procesor, or another brand video card...wait, what part of the average mac is designed and manufactored by apple again? The plastic casing right?
IanIrvin 3 years ago 57
The screen, built-in iSight Camera, the SuperDrive, keyboard, and Mighty Mouse.
shadowlock 3 years ago
Exactly. Seems like false advertising to me to claim that mac computers are made with only apple made parts.
IanIrvin 3 years ago 26
I don't think the point of the commercial was to advertise that it's all made by one company because that means nothing. The point was that Apple can integrate the hardware and software together better than the other vendors.
shadowlock 3 years ago 3
point or no the lie was said
IanIrvin 3 years ago
@shadowlock The point of the advertisment was to say Mac's hardware and software are all made by Apple so it works so well. That is untrue as it uses Intel's Core i processors and Nvidia's Graphics among many other things.
Furthermore how can Apple integrate the hardware and software better than other vendors when the stuff comes from all different places just like PCs??
Is there proof Macs are better made? Last time I checked Apple was forth in reliability after Asus, Toshiba and Sony.
HDMovieScenes 1 year ago
@shadowlock integrating hardware and software is not that difficult. the only remotely hard part about having parts from different companies is finding the proper drivers and making sure that all the parts (ie RAM, CPU, GPU, mobo) fit together. and in the case of prebuilt computers, the company that built it takes care of all those problems in advance.
also, if the point was hardware/software integration they would've said so, instead of ripping on PC for having components from multiple brands
gitghetto 1 year ago
@shadowlock mac suck , get used to it
and oh , dont go rage now , they really suck , if u buyed one it was ur mystake
ssttteeff 1 year ago
@shadowlock actually i remember reading somewhere that the screens on macbooks were made by either LG or HP, can't remember which. The superdrives are actually matshita drives, which i'm pretty sure are made by panasonic. The webcam is developed by apple, but it's not a particularly great webcam in the first place. and the apple keyboard and mouse are just a keyboard and a mouse, it's not very hard to integrate it with the software well.
gitghetto 9 months ago
@shadowlock At least the people at the Genius Bar fix problems in your Mac even if it's an NVIDIA issue or Intel issue, instead of most warranty repair services for PCs that go "There's nothing we can do for you!"
videodude1298 7 months ago
@shadowlock Most important part, the logic board is designed by mac..?
minhajk21 6 months ago
@IanIrvin It's not quite made by the same people, that is true, but unlike on Windows, on a Mac, the operating system has been made to run on that specific hardware that they get from Intel, Nvidia etc. And also, in some cases, it's built specific for the Mac.
augustuen 8 months ago
@IanIrvin Oh like Microsoft designs it's own PC on which material to use, screen size, etc... Don't be silly, Apple or for that matter no comp company is in that field of making screens and all, otherwise it would be ridiculously expensive.. the point is they decide the software and hardware..... unlike Microsoft who licenses it to third party vendors
Pls try to understand what "hardware" in this context means :)
inuadi 8 months ago
@shadowlock yup and these things makes a huge difference
biplav32 1 year ago
@shadowlock They 're called peripherals!!!!
Panos8918 1 year ago
@shadowlock LOL thats barely of any importance. The CPU and GPU are probably the two most important components and both of which are designed and manufactured by companies other than Apple. You list the friggin webcam, mouse and keyboard. -__- The screen, keyboard and mouse is interchangable and none of the Macs require it as there are many alternatives.
Also Apple did not manufacture any of the "components" you listed. Most are made in Hon Hai Precision Industry Corporation Factory in China.
HDMovieScenes 1 year ago
@shadowlock omg what ever would we do without dvd drives from a company that isn't experienced in making them and a mouse with one button, the universe would surely end. oh and the built in isight camera, shit carl zeiss optics got nothing on you, you just put them to shame.

Apple doesn't actually manufacture the parts, they pick and choose parts and design the machine to work with the operating system.
PCs are basically hardware parts just slapped together. OEM's don't really take the time to take in accounts on how Windows might behave because of certain hardware brand.
Coraxuss 3 years ago
ehem.. Intel.. anyone?
rakista4hire 3 years ago
'PCs are basically hardware parts just slapped together'
Actually, PC hardware must be compatible with each other, and drivers must be written to so that it will work correctly in Windows. OEM hardware is generally the same as retail hardware, just without all the extras(manuals, cables, etc).
Plus, ability to pick and choose parts is generally considered an advantage for PCs, because the same hardware setup can be gotten for a much lower price, as well as the ability to build your own.
AppleScams 3 years ago
Yeah, but can they truly know what brand parts aren't gonna end up making their PC shit brown Zune bricks to death? That's a factor to take in. If you want a good PC, then I imagine it might have to be a custom-built ground up that doesn't run any version of Windows.

Thunderwing, with a little hack any Intel Core based PC can run OSX as well. The hardware is the same, Apple just adds a little unlocking chip that says this is mac compatible hardware to the OS. Remove that bit of code and it'll run fine.
