I know Joan knew how amazing it was not only to run in the first womens Olympic Marathon, but to win it. But when she crossed the finish line, I wonder if she really REALLY knew what a truly historical moment it was.
I watch this video before I leave for every tough race. I'm running my first 100-mile race in August in Leadville, and I know this will inspire me. This song by the Killers is definitely on the iPod.
I am more of a sprinter but every single time I watch this video, I am so amazed and it really makes me want to run a marathon. I love track so much! Thumbs up if you do too!
What a great video - Joanie's performance was one of the classic performances of all time. FIrst women's marathon in the Olympics and she won convincingly despite her pre-race injuries!!! She beat a legendary field: Grete Waitz (RIP), Rosa Mota, Ingrid Christiansen...simply amazing.
Great video. I've started running again after ten years. This video reminded me of why I loved running and I now wonder why I ever quit. I watch it everyday after work and then go out on a run. It provides me that little extra motivational spark I need to go out even though I sometimes don't want to go run. Thank you.
Great video - except Joan wasn't just joined by Americans lining LA's streets; this Canadian guy was transfixed, watching on TV at home in Vancouver. Nationalism aside, I'd run my first marathon in 1982 & knew all about the adversity Joan had overcome just to get there. She was heroic - she IS heroic & still inspires me after 23 marathons & finally getting to Boston. I still run, teach HS & coach X-C & Track, and she now helps me inspire the kids I coach who, in turn, inspire me back.
What a legend! On the weekend Joan Benoit, at age 53 ran 2:47 in the Chicago Marathon. Just one minute outside the qualifying time for the American Olympic Marathon trials...amazing!
This is why I love running. Great videos Fancyboy. I've seen all of them and when training gets rough...turning to one of these videos helps find that meaning in why we do it.
People don't know that earlier in that year Joan Benoit won the U.S. Olympic trials Marathon in Pittsburgh...only seventeen days after knee surgery!!!
Along with 1980's "Miracle on Ice" US Hockey Gold medal win over the Soviet Union, Benoit's 1984 Olympic Championship is the most inspirational athletic moment I've ever had the honor to witnessed.
... When the race was over, I found that I was the only female student who had chosen to run the half marathon over the 10K. With only 4 other females (from the community) there and all of the rest men/boys, I am realized how amazing this video is.
I actually discovered this video twenty minutes before I had to leave for my school's own half marathon (which was open to the public.) I don't usually run distance, and remembering this video helped keep me running in the last fourth of the race...
Sure you see 200lbs people turn in 3.30 times but can you imagine what time they would be able to turn in they were the correct weight. This two pounds for every inch rule is usaully a rule for men. Women should be a little lighter than this formula
You do not have to skinny to run a marathon but it sure helps. Look at all the elite runners not an ounce of fat on them. The top USA runner Ryan Hall 5' 10" and 130lbs. The general rule of thumb is the two pounds for every inch tall rule. In other words a person who is a male that is 5' 10" should weigh approx 140lbs give or take only three or four pounds. It only makes sense when you go 26.2 miles any extra weight just slows you down.
We went to the same high school (Cape Elizabeth High in Maine) though she is older then me) and she use to run by my house all the time in high school, and before she graduated she was a legend.
But second - those quotes about battling yourself, guts overshadowing fear, etc...I saw a quote today that immediately resonated and is reflected in here.
"It is ok to lose to opponent, not ok to lose to fear." Mr. Miagi in the Karate Kid
ive raced joan a couple times in davenport, iowa at the Bix 7 mile race, shes getting old but shes still got it, she beat me the first time i ran it!!
Joan Benoit will be running in the Sept. 27, 2009 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon (along with the mayor of Toronto). She is an inspiration!
I taped this race on vhs as it happened & when she came out of the tunnel @ the Colisium that final lap is right up there w/1980 Olympic Hockey Kirk Gibson 1988 home run.....that was a great 2 weeks in summer '84.
I remember this event like was yesterday,I was a 50 years old man ,when she cross the line i cry ....and today watching this clip i cry again....Thanks for the memory
I love this, and watch it before every long run for inspiration. Replayed the whole thing in my head countless times during my last marathon and had my best run ever! Thanks!

It took supream confidence and courage to force the pace in an Olympic Marathon.
Other's especially Paula Radcliffe paid a very high price for going off much too fast in the heat of Athens
She was easily the fastest woman in that race but had to take the lead and paid the consequences
World Titles can always be broken but you will always be Olympic Champion for that games
Joan Bennoits gamble paid off Paula should have held back and run for glory from 24miles not from the first mile

In '84 to run the final 23 miles by herself is a true measure of this person -
