Well at least Ron Paul is getting the young people to wake up because the country will go bankrupt soon and no one will get anything. I like Ron Paul's idea of opting out of medicare and social security.
The problem with the age demographics of the United States is that we have an aging population. I don't think the problem is the elderly, it's that they won't be replaced in the workplace. This is a problem no matter what the economic system.
we need an opt out option. I'm 23 and there is no reason i should be paying for something that I'm not going to get. take that money and put it into my 401K or just spend it on me.
@JImmy4336 Although I agree that means testing medicare is a good idea I differ on social security. One is supposed to get close to what they put into it. it should be privatized, think of it this way, if i set up a 401k I will get far better returns than from SS. Better systems exist & should be used. If I pay for me & you pay for you, but we each get more than we would otherwise, everyone wins. I don't see a downside to privatization.
This slow motion train wreck is happening before our eyes. My generation of 20-somethings don't have enough jobs to go around to pay for the elderly. This ponzi scheme is going to end one way or another. We as a society should make it end on our terms and not the terms of bankruptcy.
Pete Peterson-a multi billionaire who has lived off the corporate nanny state his entire life talking about people making "healthcare sacrifices"? How is this journalism?
I can't blame these people if they want to get their tax dollars back but they actually want to perpetuate a system everyone knows is worse than a ponzi scheme.
At least it was actually possible to opt out of Bernie Madoff's setup without risking jail time for doing so.
Come on- young people are being promised the same thing the older generations were promised and are paying faithfully as well. The difference is that the young people will get nothing.
This is an example of true greed. People living in million dollar homes; a "truly carefree life" taking welfare payments. And commenting "Who said life is fair?"
KIDS haven't contributed anything to society YET!!! Why would we give children more an a senior citizen who has contributed SOOO much. Besides it's a parent responsibility to care for their kids.Plus working adults were promised this retirement and they contributed to it faithfully and without question.

So here's what I life isn't fair to anybody just because of your age so your wealthy NO MORE MEDICARE!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, my generation is completely screwed, thank you government, your awesome programs of social security and medicare is going to destroy any wealth my generation will be able to acquire.
Also. to the lady, and i use that term lightly, who said," Who said life is fair". I hope she dies a slow horrible cancer filled death. Its because of old fossils like hereim leaving this debt ridden country
Baby Boomers will be the last Generation to cash in on the entire scheme. Watch them scream bloody murder when there is trouble paying them, but i bet they get what they want. These are the 60's radicals and hippies that instead of going to viet nam, they protested or fled to Canada, the result being less competition for salaries, women, resources etc. (think about it, all your friends are dead, you become manager), and they have already lived a lavish existence. My Gen. got screwed...
@megadrummer2 Your generation was never subject to a military draft, .In otheworrds you had a choice if losing your life in war was right for you, boomers had no choice they were forced to serve under the law or face years in jail. So how did boomers protesting getting forced into the draft in the 1960's give them a lavish existence or screw your generation?
@garywhooper That is true, and we both know the Viet Nam war should not have happened. The sheer fact that many if not most 17-? yr olds were being killed creates a gap in #'s of competition here at home. Also, the war was run by a Democrat who wouldn't allow our men what they needed to win, giving me the impression he wanted them dead. That aside, that Generation is viewed as & has been identified as being a radical, socialist, progressive movement of epic nature.
Those under 18 don't have voting rights, so it doesn't really matter what happens to them. The average age of homelessness is 9, yet this issue is never talked about.
Aw... looks like if the oldster fucks want to keep their free shit, they're going to have to loosen up on some of the money so younger people can have living wages to pay for it.
Maybe if not everything people with money did was evil, the world wouldn't be such a shitheap.
The amounts they paid in are not proportionate to the benefits they received (getting too much for the cost).
In the future, the amounts paid paid by young people today will not be proportionate to the benefits they will receive in the future (getting too little for the cost)
Have their FAMILIES support them. If they don't have families, then they've had their entire lives to save up for retirement without the expenses of a family, so they can afford to support themselves.
Honestly, do you think old people were totally helpless before Medicare was implemented.
"Who said life is fair?" Yeah, the whole point of civilized society is to MAKE life as fair as possible. It's kind of in the constitution. I was ALWAYS irked by that argument.
So I guess before I retire, I better blow all my money on luxury so I don't have enough money to cover costs. I'll make sure I don't have enough left to have to pay.
Why should I have to pay for an old person's healthcare, when I can't even pay for my own? Especially, since some of these old farts have the money to afford health care.
the old-timers getting more than they put in have maybe 10-20 years left tops. After that the currency will collapse under the deficit spending and it won't matter after that point. Their benefits will buy nothing of value because the currency will be worthless. At that time we can remind them that no one said life was fair.
that bitch has some nerve thinking that it's fair for them to have us pay for her shit, and then said "WHO SAID LIFE IS FAIR" when somebody tells her the facts
id like to smack that spoiled silver spoon old hag, oh yeah as long as she's taken care of who cares about anyone else cause she'll be dead when it all goes to shit.
The Entitlement Mentality is a mark of fundamental cultural weakness. Nobody is entitled to anything in this life. Every breath you take is a miracle and a gift, and should be treated as such.
@spyletu Not really. If you think about it, you didn't earn life. It was given to you. And everything in this life that you have, from the blood pumping in your veins, the air in your chest, to the sounds you hear, to what you possess at this very moment can be taken away from you in the very next instant. You are entitled to nothing. In a civil society, we determine if we are allowed the freedom to earn and keep what we earn for ourselves. Savage societies steal them from you.
I think a sliding scale is fair. Social Security is a sliding scale so why isn't medicare? But of course, a reverse sliding scale since the young pay for the old. The more you make at 65 and up the less you get in medical coverage.
The most profound thing about this video if where he points out that the folks who already paid in are spending WAY more than they actually put in. This is a major problem. They need to cash these programs out now.
My grandmother inherited enough money when my granfather passed away to pay for a thousand heart transplants. She thinks it's funny that she doesn't have to pay for her healthcare. Of course this pisses me off, but, quoting the video, "WHO SAID LIFE IS FAIR?" No system is perfect.
seniors did pay in and should be allowed to recoup their money but they shouldn't be able to go to the doctor for a 20 or 40 dollar copay an unlimited number of times. my grandma goes to the doctor for every little thing. she consumes 4 or 5 times as much health care as most people do. that is part of the rising cost.
NOt really, non-working old people have no income besides what investments they have, and they probably pay minimal taxes on that.
Paid dues, but what just by being old? They are, at this stage in their lives, the least productive economically. But they are old and cute, and have NOTHIGN to do all day, which is why they are so well organized politically.
The major cost of All USA's products and services is caused by the Legalities. The legal fees are in essence, a value Added Tax on every product and service (makes the USA non-competitive). NO other country has Lawyers in the leadership pyramid (from the TOP down now) like the USA. Now 3/4ths of the congress are lawyers, They will Never vote for Tort reform, it would cause them to lose their cushy jobs. Until That changes just keep on paying and complaining. You could Stop electing Lawyers?
I'm a big fan of John Stossel but I think he missed something. He said that seniors are getting 2-3 times what they paid into medicare but if they had put that same money into a savings account for a few decades the miracle of compound interest would have doubled or tripled their money as well.
@studentofsmith WRONG. WRONG. Do the math, its only 12% increase when the stockmarket is doing well. People are LIVING too long, and still retiring at 65. Absolutely bankrupting the future.
The boomers saw their inheritance go to the goverment and medical expences, for the most part. Some boomers recieved an inheritance from both sets of parents.I want to protect what I earned, and let my son receive an inheritance. There are not many insurance companies that insure people over sixtyfive unless they have medicare aswell.Death and taxes are your only future, look on the bright side.
@358Liberty I thought Stossel was an atheist?I know that some call Jewish a race. But that is not really the full story. It's a religion with a culture. There are white, arab and black Jews. ANyone can convert too. But culturally if you are born to a practicing Jew you are labled a Jew. Pretty sure congress in AMerica went out of their way to delcare Jews a race. That's just sill though, when you look at the facts.
Anyways...pretty sure he is not religious. Love his new show on FOX
the government has been spending money out of your social security trust funds to pay for the deficit through the years and the responsible citizens who were in the position to stop it before these new generations of kids were even born failed to do that, and now there's a void in the trust fund. there's now not enough money, and that is apparently a very difficult concept to understand.
So while the young lives poor and trying to make something out of themselves, the old are getting richer and couldn't care a less about the young. This is one of the reasons that young people dislike the elderly so much because the elderly don't give a flying damn about the young.
All they do is go to casinos anyways. Most casinos winners are old people.
The young blame the old .The old blame the young. The rich blame the poor. The poor blame the rich. This is nothing new and it never changes. The truth is,home prices , taxes and health insurance prices are out of proportion to wages.Your jobs went over seas. All with the exception of public employees. They get private expensive health coverage for life and almost double incomes vs. private firms. This is paid for for with your tax dollar.
It's one of the reasons that I'm against giving these types of old people my tax dollars. It's not right. If there middle class, and lower class elderly, then they should get medicare, if there rich and on medicare then they should get none. Please pay for yourself.
Medicare is not welfare. The people who you are paying for with taxes are known as public employees. The other people are known as private employees, when you purchase a car, you pay for their health care. When you collect SS medicare you are are recieving what you paid for.The private health care will only take your money and seldom pan out.
75% of all medical expences are in the last five days of life. When they tell you your parents are going to die, why say to them do everything possible?A entrepeneur should start a soylent green factory. This will feed the young and above all, its green.
look i'm in my 20s and i don't have anything to pay for your benefit which is several times higher than how much you put in on average for your whole generation.. plain and simple.
I paid over 200K in the last 40yrs and still have another seven years to go.This money goes to private insurance and I never made a single claim. When I retire the private health care companies won;t even remember my name. This is why we need socialist medicine not some half baked reform. Unless a two tier system works for you, but that would be facism.Call me a socialist but don't call me a facist.Don't forget to call me stupid for not seeing it coming
too bad, it's well known that social security will go bankrupt in a few years. they will soon raise the age cap and i doubt even that will do it. there used to be 4 workers supporting every elderly, now it's one to one. i doubt you'll collect 100% of your input and stop there but it's none of my concern and i'm not going to waste time debating your personality, none of my business. the fact is your uneducated generation spent too much before i was born.
I hope none of my generation is educating you.Every thing we learned changed. When you get in the work force or profession you will find the the learning is only beginning. You will also find many mutilingual people with no education. You don't explain where your going. What country won't rip you off?
but you indeed are at an advantaged position. even if the people who pay for your wellfare isn't at a position to stay no because the switch is in the government's hands. but rest assured it will be your children paying for it.. for someone like me who speaks several languages, the last thing i will do is stay here and pay for your friends once my education is done. i'm not a collectivist but there were simply too many individuals in your generation that supported this failed policy.
This all started before my generation hit the work force.I can't recall all the times the goverment changed the rules.I do know this. any thing the private sector did failed. The goverment will be there when you retire. Don' t worry about that.
the government is responsible for 4% of the drugs invented, and today they pay over half of what an average doctor does when he sees patients. if it were up to the government, there won't be any success to fail from in the first place. in that aspect, maybe there won't be much failure since there won't be much success, but i doubt that's relevant in achieving any high standards of living.
Private health insurance does not develope any advances in medicine or drugs .The reason for soaring medical insurance, both private and goverment funded ,is advertising.I cannot disprove the weak theory of failing medical success.Something cannot be disproven until it has been ,proven All of this won't happen in my life time anyway .A good medical system will be your benifit.I hope you never experience the horrendous discripancie of private health care.
That part of video is true.People with prescription benefits don't care sbout the cost of medicine. Yes, these old farts demand from their doc, the as seen on tv medicine, that they don't need, and demand a presription that is expensive. This practice is recognized by the AARP.Reform should correct this.Discrepancies will still exist in any form of health care .Geography will be the reason.
90% Have health insurance in N.J. Since 50% work for goverment and 20%are on Medicare or medicaid That leaves only 20% with private sector insurance. That means 70% of all insured are tax funded.
Would every one prefer they live in poor house and be 100% on the goverment. With out medicare thats where they would be .You see 12,000 a year is not in these peoples budget. Private insurance tells them to kiss off any way.
Their pockets wouldn't go very far in N.J.This is Florida. I guess you could make these middle class people look even richer in Mexico. I know people on assistance that have very nice places in florida. These people are not affluent.Look at the ones with a baby grand in the lobby of their yacht, on the intercoastal, then we can call them affluent.John Stossel Earns more money in one yr.than these people who saved their intire life. Before the housing bust, 500K was a run of the mill house in N.J.
N. J. is a different planet than the rest of the countryFlorida is the Twilight Zone.Taxes alone are driving people to the poor house.Over 50% have a goverment or goverment related job with expensive private insurance.
The internal poulation growth has gone nowhere since the boomers .All population growth is from immigration.People raised in a bed one bath house two parents four children and a dog .Now live in five six bedroom four bath house no kids, by choice.Pollution is and food are not their worries. The average home starts at 300,000 . -The prices of this condo 3.5 to5 constitutes a starter home in many US cities.Swargardin your 100% right about the super generation, though these folks are young for ww2
34 trillion dollars goes to medicare for the elderly and that money is going to rise. For people who don't think thats a lot of money check this out in numbers:
$34,000,000,000
or what about in the yen money system?
¥3,400,000,000,000
Worst part is, there is going to be LESS of the younger generation. People these days aren't having as many kids because they are concerned about global warming, not enough food to eat, no money to support, etc.
34,000,000,000 is 34 billion not trillion. The best thing you can do for the enviroment is not have children . Unfortunate most religions are trying to out number each other.Imagine the cost of private health care if the goverment did not pick up the tab for the most part.
True the retired are the ones who made today's world, true we should assist those who can't assist themselves, those who can, should support themselves buy paying out of their own pocket, those interviewed can obviously afford, true they paid medicare at every pay check, but in the video 2.44 the average medicare beneficiary claims 2 to 3 times more than what they have paid.
i don't mind paying for their healthcare at all. i don;t know why stossel who mostly talks sense is making such a big deal about it. i would expect the same thing when i'm old as well. its time when we stop being selfish and start thinking about those who can;t look after themselves. the elderly have to deal with a number of other psychological and emotional issue's as well. lets take the burden of atleast healthcare of their shoulders.
It isn't about being selfish, but rather what is affordable. Most of us pay for Medicare because we think that it is our front loaded premium on benefits to be received. How is paying for 40 years and getting nothing in return something that anyone should have to do?
Regarding this video, I don't think that the group of old people interviewed isn't representative. I suspect that most seniors don't use a doctors visit as a social affair.
These people worked for years to build this country and to build the economic framework that allows my generation to succeed. They fought our wars and worked their asses off. What's wrong with giving them healthcare? Its stupid that Stossel uses the richest Seniors as his example, not the average struggling one.
This is what I don't get about leftists. They are against people setting up their own ponzi schemes then they are against it but they are for government forcing everyone into a massive ponzi scheme.
Argh, the more I listen, the more I hate this guy. Let's all make a sacrifice, I'll start by refusing cancer treatment and dying. Is that what you want, Stossel? Asshole.
Medicare is not free, they paid for it in every paycheck. They contributed and now they get the benefits that they earned. It's incredible that this douche don't think they should get what their benefits, so what do they? go bankrupt and die without medical care.
Um, you do realize they DID address this in the video. The average Medicare recipient is receiving double or triple in benefits the value of what they paid in. How can you ignore a fact that's staring you right in the face? Are you willfully ignorant?
The current legislation is not to use the same identical formula as medicare. Premiums would go up a little for those under 65, but not impossible to pay like private health care. Maybe you feel that people should die when they are sick, I disagree. That's the difference between you and I.
I my mind the poor should get help. You know the rich complain more and think their poor .The truly poor don't complain much.If you work for a buisness the price is the same for rich or poor when you make out a bill. The man who works and collects SS gets his payment deducted after 30K The man with a million in the bank will not get his SS deducted because he has a million dollars. If you think this through, what seems unfair, isn't.
Believe it or not Jersey has some beautiful ranches Colts Neck NJ. To name one location .I dont believe 80k would pay for the drive way.Horses might only be their hobby not sure .
So.... Life should be fair for you because YOU earned it, but it shouldn't be fair for us because WE haven't earned it YET? Ya old bitch.

The most compassionate thing to do for the elderly is to cure aging, not rob younger generations to pay for their medical care.
amperro 11 months ago
Aw... looks like if the oldster fucks want to keep their free shit, they're going to have to loosen up on some of the money so younger people can have living wages to pay for it.
Maybe if not everything people with money did was evil, the world wouldn't be such a shitheap.

@momo5288

Honestly, do you think old people were totally helpless before Medicare was implemented.

the old-timers getting more than they put in have maybe 10-20 years left tops. After that the currency will collapse under the deficit spending and it won't matter after that point.

NO other country has Lawyers in the leadership pyramid (from the TOP down now) like the USA. So while the young lives poor and trying to make something out of themselves, the old are getting richer and couldn't care a less about the young. This is one of the reasons that young people dislike the elderly so much because the elderly don't give a flying damn about the young.
All they do is go to casinos anyways. Most casinos winners are old people.
godzilla0083 2 years ago 2
The young blame the old .The old blame the young. The rich blame the poor. The poor blame the rich. This is nothing new and it never changes. The truth is,home prices , taxes and health insurance prices are out of proportion to wages.Your jobs went over seas. All with the exception of public employees. They get private expensive health coverage for life and almost double incomes vs. private firms. This is paid for for with your tax dollar.
appapo3 2 years ago
It's one of the reasons that I'm against giving these types of old people my tax dollars. It's not right. If there middle class, and lower class elderly, then they should get medicare, if there rich and on medicare then they should get none. Please pay for yourself.
godzilla0083 2 years ago
Medicare is not welfare. The people who you are paying for with taxes are known as public employees. The other people are known as private employees, when you purchase a car, you pay for their health care. When you collect SS medicare you are are recieving what you paid for.The private health care will only take your money and seldom pan out.

too bad, it's well known that social security will go bankrupt in a few years. they will soon raise the age cap and i doubt even that will do it. there used to be 4 workers supporting every elderly, now it's one to one. i doubt you'll collect 100% of your input and stop there but it's none of my concern and i'm not going to waste time debating your personality, none of my business. the fact is your uneducated generation spent too much before i was born.
spyletu 2 years ago

appapo3 2 years ago
but you indeed are at an advantaged position. even if the people who pay for your wellfare isn't at a position to stay no because the switch is in the government's hands. but rest assured it will be your children paying for it.. for someone like me who speaks several languages, the last thing i will do is stay here and pay for your friends once my education is done. i'm not a collectivist but there were simply too many individuals in your generation that supported this failed policy.
spyletu 2 years ago

the government is responsible for 4% of the drugs invented, and today they pay over half of what an average doctor does when he sees patients. if it were up to the government, there won't be any success to fail from in the first place. in that aspect, maybe there won't be much failure since there won't be much success, but i doubt that's relevant in achieving any high standards of living.

Does this seem right?
christy5647 2 years ago
34,000,000,000 is 34 billion not trillion. The best thing you can do for the enviroment is not have children . Unfortunate most religions are trying to out number each other.Imagine the cost of private health care if the goverment did not pick up the tab for the most part.

True the retired are the ones who made today's world, true we should assist those who can't assist themselves, those who can, should support themselves buy paying out of their own pocket, those interviewed can obviously afford, true they paid medicare at every pay check, but in the video 2.44 the average medicare beneficiary claims 2 to 3 times more than what they have paid.
JeanLouie1106 2 years ago
I'm not as concerned about the 2 to 3 times issue, because it is insurance and you normally get more in benefit than the cost of your premium.
mathproof 2 years ago
i don't mind paying for their healthcare at all. i don;t know why stossel who mostly talks sense is making such a big deal about it. i would expect the same thing when i'm old as well. its time when we stop being selfish and start thinking about those who can;t look after themselves. the elderly have to deal with a number of other psychological and emotional issue's as well. lets take the burden of atleast healthcare of their shoulders.
proudtobedesi 2 years ago
It isn't about being selfish, but rather what is affordable. Most of us pay for Medicare because we think that it is our front loaded premium on benefits to be received. How is paying for 40 years and getting nothing in return something that anyone should have to do?
Regarding this video, I don't think that the group of old people interviewed isn't representative. I suspect that most seniors don't use a doctors visit as a social affair.

XiaoGui17 2 years ago 2
The current legislation is not to use the same identical formula as medicare. Premiums would go up a little for those under 65, but not impossible to pay like private health care. Maybe you feel that people should die when they are sick, I disagree. That's the difference between you and I.
