First of all, the mercury that the whale is poisend whith is just as toxic for the whale, as it is for humans, so that is just a stupid argument. Then I would like to ask you guys, who is to blame for mercury poisoning? Becouse that might be a good cause for you to dive into...;)
How about pigs, chickens, cows, sheep, turkey and such, or even cats and dogs and rabbit and rats and horses? Do some research on how those are kept alive only to be slaughtered! The whales are not hunted as it is with deers and such. They are only taken if they are spotted near the shore, and the number can be as little as under one hundred or less a year, as opposed to millions of pigs and cows and chickens in almost every other country in the world
The Faroes "Bay Of Blood" are a group of about 30 islandslocated in the North Atlantic Ocean, situated halfway between Icelandand Scotland. They fall under the crown of Denmark, but aresemi-independent. The population is about 46,000, and they inhabitabout half of the islands. The Faroes economy relies only on economic fishing, but that doesnt give them the right to slaughter 544 Atlantic white sided dolphins in a single day, like they did in 1988.
Recently, studies have shown that the meat and blubber of pilot whales contain high amounts of mercury, PCBs, DDT and dieldrin.
To the people of the Faroe Islands...I say, "STOPTHIS SENSELESS MASSACRE!!!" Anyone who could bury a hook into the backof a whale, drag it to shore, slit its throat, and butcher it, deservesto die of mercury poisoning...or worse.
According to Faroese legislation it is also permitted to hunt certain species of small cetaceans other than pilot whales. These include: Bottlenose dolphin; Atlantic white-beaked dolphin; Atlantic white-sided dolphin; and Harbour porpoise (There are also specific regulations for the hunting of harbour porpoise. Harbour porpoises are killed with shotguns).
Denmarks shame When the dolphin whales get close to Denmarks Faroe Islands it is a day of celebration. Schools close and the children come to the beach with their parents. The people dress in traditional costume, and are eager to receive the cetaceans. The dolphin whales arrive in groups, there are many females with their young. They are sociable animals, they are curious and they are not afraid of humans. Its the great autumn festival for the islanders. The motor boats urge the whales
mercury, PCBs and DDT derivatives....I guess those people would still eat whale even if the scientific community would inform them that those chemicals can disrupt the reproductive capacity of any living organism.
Once there is such a small community that highly consume heavy metals and chemicals, it is certain that this society will perish and their anti-global culture will sink deep into the Atlantic Ocean.
If you thought the whale had been saved - think again. Cetaceans - whales, dolphins and porpoises - need greater protection than ever, not only from the hunters, but also from the destruction of their environment.
In July of 2000, the organization Sea Shepherd, that dedicates it to protect the sea forms of life, sailed until the Feroe Islands to intervine in the annual slaughter of whales pilots.
IT IS IN THE TRADITION THE FAMOUS BATH OF BLOOD! It better obtained that the slaughter was taken to the first pages of European media e, that this, started to make economic pressure on the company that still bought foods of the sea with origin in the Feroe, what it represents 90% of the local economy, with predominance of the purchases made for the dutch giant Unilever.
Above of 20 a thousand points of European sales the retail they had cancelled its contracts of fishes the order of the Sea Shepherd, informs the vestibule of the entity.
The slaughter, the slaughter, the TORTURE, is for the SPORT OF the RICH INSULARES, the meat of the whale pilot is forbidden by average order for the FOOD, the meat mortally is poisoned, therefore, he is proven the MURDEROUS SPORT. THE SPORT OF PAIN, THE STORM, THE DEATH AND, OF THE BLOOD!
Where they will go to place 2000 carcasses (bones of the whales pilot and the dolphins), that they are contaminated and will go to contaminate the land and the animals in general?
Who deferred payment in faroé Islands, is against the slaughter of the whales pilot and the dolphins that are assassinated the SHOT, in the great slaughter. Who is favorable, he is who takes the profit and these do not live in the islands, but they are fed with quality in the Denmark.
The gotten profit does not favor the classroom poor! The advantage favors rich insulares. They are powerful insulares that they promote the slaughter What they will go to make with the poisoned carcasses, therefore will at risk place you the animals of the land? They are 2000 carcasses annually, of the whales pilot and the dolphins. It stops with the slaughter of the whales and the dolphins!
Too much ignorant peoples! They treat the people with arrogangia, so that they do not come back to the canal, is a strategy. They eliminate the whales pitolo in cruel slaughter, because they feed themselves with the fish, bringing damage the Faroé Islands. They do not eat the meat but she commercializes with the tourists. It is a Mafia.
Too much ignorant peoples! They eliminate the whales pitolo in cruel slaughter, because they feed themselves with the fish, bringing damage the Faroé Islands. They do not eat the meat but she commercializes with the tourists.
ELIMINATION IS SLAUGHTER - BECAUSE THE WHALES PILOT FEED THEMSELVES OF FISH. The WHALES Pilot MORTALLY ARE CONTAMINATED improper for food. THIS IS CRIME AND ALREADY HE IS PUBLIC AND WELL-KNOWN.
No i´m not racists. One thing i believe is that we should preserve our culture in the nordic countries and foremost the Faroese culture . I come from Faroe Islands, i´m proud of our country.
I`m against muslim immigration because it´s bad for the nordic countries, they are arrogant, respectless and violent against non muslims.
SHAME on the CURRENT WHALING, of the countries that continue ASSASSINATING WHALES, therefore very distant is of being TRUE WHALING, but intentions for ends TO EXTORT the MOUNTS OF MONEY OF the GOVERNMENT, with varied names: some appraise the hunting as: TRADITION, others, for SCIENTIFIC ends, however, the result is the same: WE PAY WITH OUR TAXES to assassinate our animals and FOR an END TO the PLANET!
Japanese Government invited Denmark, as many other Governments, to a meeting this February to discuss the future of the Whaling Industry. The clear intent is to create an illusion of widespread support for an end to the moratorium on commercial whaling by the IWC.
Denmark position inside the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has changed many times in the past years. Mostly of its population opposes whaling and it has supported many positive initiatives to protect whales, but recently it changed again its position becoming a strong pro-whaling country, mostly due to the pressure of Greenland and the Faroe island.
Campaigners also say the trade could become a smokescreen for illegal hunting of whales.
Although commercial whaling is banned worldwide, Iceland, like Japan, hunts minke whales for "scientific research"; this year its boats caught about 60 individuals.
Even veteran researchers from the Minamata saga were shocked by the new figures. "Hirokatsu Akagi, a director of the National Institute for Minamata Disease, was very surprised," says Endo. "He'd never seen levels above 20 micrograms per gram."
On average, concentrations of mercury in whale and dolphin livers were 370 micrograms per gram, 900 times the government limit. Average levels in kidneys and lungs were also high, about 100 times the limit. None of the samples was below the limit.
The researchers call on the government to impose tighter regulations on the consumption of whale organs. In particular, they warn that pregnant women risk poisoning their unborn children. In the 1950s and early 1960s, hundreds of children around Japan's Minamata Bay were born with horrific birth defects after their mothers ate seafood contaminated with mercury compounds, which had been poured raw into the bay since the 1930s. Thousands more suffered brain damage.
At these concentrations, a 60-kilogram adult eating just 0.15 grams of liver would exceed the weekly mercury intake considered safe by the World Health Organization, say Tetsuya Endo, Koichi Haraguchi and Masakatsu Sakata at the University of Hokkaido, who carried out the research. "Acute intoxication could result from a single ingestion," they warn in a draft paper accepted for publication in The Science of the Total Environment.
Tests on whalemeat on sale in Japan have revealed astonishing levels of mercury. While it has long been known that the animals accumulate heavy metals such as mercury in their tissues, the levels discovered have surprised even the experts.
Two of the 26 liver samples examined contained over 1970 micrograms of mercury per gram of liver. That is nearly 5000 times the Japanese government's limit for mercury contamination, 0.4 micrograms per gram.
And of course pilot whales, who are intelligent, highly social animals, are forced to endure severe physical and psychological suffering during the drive hunt—the hunt does not meet humane slaughter standards at any level.
The Faroese pilot whale hunts are now completely unnecessary as they are no longer needed to provide food for islanders. With recent studies showing that the meat from dolphin species contains toxins that are unsafe to consume, no one should be eating meat from the pilot whales anyway.
Pregnant Faroese women and young children have historically been frequent consumers of the meat, resulting in an increase in learning disabilities and other health problems in the population. An advisory recommending only limited pilot whale meat consumption for these groups is now issued by the government, but the hunt goes on.
HSI works closely with WDCS (the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society), which has approached this issue indirectly, in an effort to avoid reinforcing local resistance to international protests. Since the pilot whale hunt is conducted for local consumption, WDCS has highlighted the negative side of eating the meat. Scientific studies have shown that pilot whale meat is highly contaminated with PCBs, heavy metals, and other toxins.
Because of this, most protest efforts in the past by groups concerned with animal welfare and population sustainability have only inflamed the situation and pushed the hunt numbers up, making the hunt into more of a demonstration of community pride than a necessary food source. In recent years, the numbers of pilot whales killed have been in decline, quite possibly because the population around the Faroe Islands is in decline.
Annual Faroe Islands Drive Hunt of Pilot Whales Should End
Many people have seen the graphic pictures portraying the annual drive hunt of pilot whales in the Faroe Islands, an autonomous province of Denmark. During these hunts, pods of pilot whales, a species in the dolphin family, are driven ashore and then brutally killed. About 950 pilot whales die every year during the killing season, which generally takes place in the summer.
The Faroe Islands international image is already tarnished as word of the hunts spreads around the globe. The hunt discourages tourists from visiting the Islands and will continue to do so until the killing has stopped. The Faroese government needs to take action and end the hunts once and for all in order to save its image and spare hundreds of pilot whales the cruel deaths that take place every year in these northern islands.
It would seem that the pilot whale has developed a high level of tolerance with regard to mercury - in addition to a pollution immunity mechanism. Owing to its special diet, the pilot whale carries a higher level of mercury than other species of marine mammals in the North Atlantic. In general, toothed whales carry a higher level than baleen whales.
Source: "Marine Hunters: Whaling and Sealing in the North Atlantic," published by the High North Alliance, 1997.
Pilot whale meat contains relatively large amounts of mercury. We do not know how much of this comes from natural sources on the sea bed and how much comes from human pollution.
Organic pollutants bind themselves to fatty tissues and it is therefore those cultures that consume considerable
amounts of seal or whale blubber that are the most vulnerable. This applies to most Inuit communities, particularly the smaller villages that still maintain hunting traditions, and where imported food is very expensive. It also applies to the Faroe Islanders. In the Faroes, the blubber of pilot whales constitutes an important part of the traditional diet.
75% of women in northern Quebec and Labrador and 95% of women in Greenland have a higher PCB level in their blood than «the level of concern» of 5 parts per million defined by the Canadian health authorities.47 Organic pollutants are transferred to infant through their mother's milk. Surveys carried out in the US show that PCB can be harmful to the development of the central nervous system.
The medical officers note that it wasn't the Faroese who created the pollution. But "these results have already led to tightened restrictions on pollution worldwide. We must therefore also ourselves acknowledge the consequences."
FAROE ISLANDS (30 Nov 2008) — Chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption, because they are toxic - as revealed by research on the Faroes themselves.
The remote Atlantic islands, situated between Scotland and Iceland, have been one of the last strongholds of traditional whaling, with thousands of small pilot whales killed every year, and eaten by most Faroese.
Anti-whaling groups have long protested, but the Faroese argued that whaling is part of their culture - an argument adopted by large-scale whalers in Japan and Norway.
But today in a statement to the islanders, chief medical officers Pál Weihe and Høgni Debes Joensen announced that pilot whale meat and blubber contains too much mercury, PCBs and DDT derivatives to be safe for human consumption.
"It is with great sadness that this recommendation is provided," they said. "The pilot whale has kept many Faroese alive through the centuries."
But in "a bitter irony", they said, research on the impact of the pollutants on the Faroese themselves has shown that mercury, especially, causes lasting damage.
The work has revealed damage to fetal neural development, high blood pressure, and impaired immunity in children, as well as increased rates of Parkinson's disease, circulatory problems and possibly infertility in adults. The Faroes data renewed concerns about low-level mercury exposures elsewhere.
Sorry, I don't want offend anyone. But how do you classify people who kill whales only for fun, and people that don't do that, they should try to stop!
@maxyochanan The pilot whale stock is plentifull. This is NOT done by amusement. This has been done for hundreds of years to get food. People flock to such places because it's action but this is not an planned event, this happens on random when small boats spot whales. This is not some kind of ritual or festival.
I have to admit that we could survive well enough without this, whaling is a very small part of our diet and we are a modern nation that has plentifull of money to buy other stuff.
@maxyochanan if we stop whaling then we import more of other stuff and there will be X more pigs that will be slaughtered in mainland europe. That doesn't make it better any bit.
So if you kill a dolphine then you become a retard? How about if you buy a hamburger witch is made of cowmeat then you automaticaly approve of the killings of cows?
@silx2000 You are a retard comming in here to comment when you don't know anything about this. You come from one of the biggest rape countries in earth.

Finally: Isolation = their culture is limited.

Japanese Government invited Denmark, as many other Governments, to a meeting this February to discuss the future of the Whaling Industry. The clear intent is to create an illusion of widespread support for an end to the moratorium on commercial whaling by the IWC.
simplesefeliz 2 years ago
Denmark position inside the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has changed many times in the past years. Mostly of its population opposes whaling and it has supported many positive initiatives to protect whales, but recently it changed again its position becoming a strong pro-whaling country, mostly due to the pressure of Greenland and the Faroe island.
simplesefeliz 2 years ago
Campaigners also say the trade could become a smokescreen for illegal hunting of whales.
Although commercial whaling is banned worldwide, Iceland, like Japan, hunts minke whales for "scientific research"; this year its boats caught about 60 individuals.
simplesefeliz 2 years ago
Iceland is to begin exporting whalemeat from its scientific whaling programme.
Iceland's whaling commissioner told the BBC that up to two tonnes of minke whalemeat would be exported to the Faroe Islands.
Environmental groups say the deal breaches international rules on trading threatened species, though Iceland and the Faroe Islands say it does not.
Campaigners also say the trade could become a smokescreen for illegal hunting of whales.

The deforestation of Brazil's rain forest is seriously decreasing the earth's chances of binding airborne carbon dioxide in vegetation.
Thus severely limiting the oxygen re-released into the atmosphere.
Furthermore this is contributing to global warming, leading to large amounts of Brazil itself getting submerged in the next decades.
And you sit there yapping about some whales.

Extreme mercury levels revealed in whalemeat
At these concentrations, a 60-kilogram adult eating just 0.15 grams of liver would exceed the weekly mercury intake considered safe by the World Health Organization, say Tetsuya Endo, Koichi Haraguchi and Masakatsu Sakata at the University of Hokkaido, who carried out the research. "Acute intoxication could result from a single ingestion," they warn in a draft paper accepted for publication in The Science of the Total Environment.

Extreme mercury levels revealed in whalemeat
Tests on whalemeat on sale in Japan have revealed astonishing levels of mercury. While it has long been known that the animals accumulate heavy metals such as mercury in their tissues, the levels discovered have surprised even the experts.
Two of the 26 liver samples examined contained over 1970 micrograms of mercury per gram of liver. That is nearly 5000 times the Japanese government's limit for mercury contamination, 0.4 micrograms per gram.

And of course pilot whales, who are intelligent, highly social animals, are forced to endure severe physical and psychological suffering during the drive hunt—the hunt does not meet humane slaughter standards at any level.
simplesefeliz 3 years ago
Unnecessary Slaughter
The Faroese pilot whale hunts are now completely unnecessary as they are no longer needed to provide food for islanders. With recent studies showing that the meat from dolphin species contains toxins that are unsafe to consume, no one should be eating meat from the pilot whales anyway.
simplesefeliz 3 years ago
Pregnant Faroese women and young children have historically been frequent consumers of the meat, resulting in an increase in learning disabilities and other health problems in the population. An advisory recommending only limited pilot whale meat consumption for these groups is now issued by the government, but the hunt goes on.

HSI works closely with WDCS (the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society), which has approached this issue indirectly, in an effort to avoid reinforcing local resistance to international protests. Since the pilot whale hunt is conducted for local consumption, WDCS has highlighted the negative side of eating the meat. Scientific studies have shown that pilot whale meat is highly contaminated with PCBs, heavy metals, and other toxins.
simplesefeliz 3 years ago
Taking the Right Approach

About 950 pilot whales die every year during the killing season, which generally takes place in the summer.
simplesefeliz 3 years ago

FAROE ISLANDS (30 Nov 2008) — Chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption, because they are toxic - as revealed by research on the Faroes themselves.
The remote Atlantic islands, situated between Scotland and Iceland, have been one of the last strongholds of traditional whaling, with thousands of small pilot whales killed every year, and eaten by most Faroese.
simplesefeliz 3 years ago
Anti-whaling groups have long protested, but the Faroese argued that whaling is part of their culture - an argument adopted by large-scale whalers in Japan and Norway.
But today in a statement to the islanders, chief medical officers Pál Weihe and Høgni Debes Joensen announced that pilot whale meat and blubber contains too much mercury, PCBs and DDT derivatives to be safe for human consumption.
simplesefeliz 3 years ago
"It is with great sadness that this recommendation is provided," they said. "The pilot whale has kept many Faroese alive through the centuries."
But in "a bitter irony", they said, research on the impact of the pollutants on the Faroese themselves has shown that mercury, especially, causes lasting damage.
simplesefeliz 3 years ago
The work has revealed damage to fetal neural development, high blood pressure, and impaired immunity in children, as well as increased rates of Parkinson's disease, circulatory problems and possibly infertility in adults. The Faroes data renewed concerns about low-level mercury exposures elsewhere.
