  • how do you do the port holes? I think I might try and make a small (miniscule) model of a rowing boat.... but dont count me on it!

p.s. I fainted when I saw this! Its amazing. I dont even have much patience with an airfix model

  • First, you are going to want to paint the hull with a coat of glue to seal up the cracks and crevaces. Then take a drill, on slow speed, and drill the holes. Make sure you DONT put your port holes too close together. You just end up with a big hole. Make sure you coat the ship first and let dry for at least a day.

  • hi again, how do you make the toothpicks curved? P.S. I'm 12 years old and by saturday, will have started making a model of a ship, either 1 I have designed, but probably Titanic. I will be making videos of my progress. It'll probably suck tho!

  • glue them together in pairs of 2 to make them stronger, then use wire cutter to slowly bend them in milimeter segments. I hope that makes sense.

  • all british!

  • Yes, but, I recently broke from tradition and am now building the SS American Star. But, the Brits built the best passenger liners. The Germans made some good ones too, but they are all aquariums at the bottom of the ocean.

  • MAGNIFICENT, thanks for sharing your incredible skill, i seen some and built some plastic model ships but your ones take the cake, holy crap, just awesome, im gonna watch all your videos on here, i just love model ships, and im a big Titanic and Edmund Fitzgerald buff, ever thought of building the Fitz?, thanks again for sharing your wonderful works of art with us all.

  • Well, many thanks for the compliments!! That made my day. You know, I have never thought of building a freighter. But I might give it a try. The Edmond Fitzgerald would be pretty easy. Not too many superstructure details like lifeboats and such. I will put it on the list. Right now I am busy on the SS American Star. You can find it here on YouTube. Very interesting story and shipwreck.

  • i wish someone would just come in there and hack at it with an ax

    that would be fun

  • Where do you get that much toothpicks?

  • Many years ago I received a donation of one million from a 5th grade school class. They had a class project to gather 1 million toothpicks to see how much mass it would take. they kept them in the boxes, and once the project was done, they gave them to me. I still have about 200,000 of them.

  • One million? 5th grade?

    Are you bullshitting me?

  • No, it was a one year project by the entire 5th of that school. I should have mentioned it was the ENTIRE 5th grade. They gathered 3600 boxes of all sorts of toothpicks be the end of the year glued all the boxes into a 15 ft high model of the Sears Tower. I had to go and pick this thing up which weighed about 300 lbs. Not fun, but took care of my toothpick needs for and LOOOOONNNNG time!!

  • Oh, i see.

Could have asked me to conjure some toothpicks. I'm a magician.

  • Maybe in another ship or 2. I will probably out by then...

  • Time to switch to matches.

  • There are people who work with match sticks. There is the UK guy who builds real musical instruments out of burnt match sticks. They PLAY too!!! He never played a musical instrument in his life. I am sure he smoked lotz of cigarettes.

  • Holy crap. It would have to be airtight apart from the holes that are required to play it.

  • He built a violin, a guitar, mandolin etc all playable. Dont know how he kept their integrity, but they never warped. His name was Jack Hall. If you google Jack Hall Matchsticks, I am sure you will find him.

  • He probably took a violin and glued matchsticks around it...

    But awesome.

  • LOL!!!

  • I'm a skeptic.

  • how does one get toothpicks to bend so freely on a ship of that size. Very nice art work.

  • Thank you! I use wire cutters to 'score and curf' them into shape. Basically, you bite the toothpick with the wire cutters with out cutting the toothpick, then turn the cutters. Hope that makes sense, there are other videos on here that demonstate what I mean.

  • Would you consider some strategic use of pasta in your ships? Pasta might give you some angles and details. BTW: your ships are awesome!

  • Like noodles?? Could be good idea. I would have to make sure they didn't gather insects. Thenk you for the compliments and the ideas!!!

  • Well, first I was thinking some strategic use of pasta. You know, like an elbow macaroni for an air intake. Now the possibility of an entire model using the huge variety of pasta available might be quite something. Pasta is made of egg, water, flour so custom forms might be possible for specific projects? I think the most beautiful ocean liner was the Normandie and it might require some flowing sheets of pasta to capture that ship's art deco gorgeousness. Ever try Normandie Wayne?

  • The Normandie was a great short lived ship. I would definately like to do it one day. Currently, I am working on the SS American Star. As far as instruction, Yes I do. I do one last February and 2 last December. They were quite fun and the participants took on to what little I showed them and made big stuff out of them

  • Have you ever seen images of the unbuilt liner designed by Norman Bel Geddes? Pretty sweet!

Do you ever do workshops/training in toothpick construction?

  • Yes I do. I do one last February and 2 last December. They were quite fun and the participants took on to what little I showed them and made big stuff out of them

  • you must have a lost of free time :D

  • wayne kusy, make a model of alcatraz thatr would take 45 years

  • Maybe I will make a small one.

  • Great work! This is some real modern art, and all of these things belong in galleries, or in the homes of the filthy rich art collectors. I wish you success in selling them!

  • Well thank you very much. I am doing the best I can. I am sure something will break lose, and sell one or two.

    Cheers Wayne

  • I have actually talked to the artist of the ship VIA phone. And he is doing the S.S. America.

  • i wonder whats next the queen elizabeth aquitania britannic majestic who knows

  • SS American Star

  • wow that would be good to watch for do you mean the wreck or the america in her glory days?

  • I dont want to do the wreck. But I like the blue color. So maybe just before she ended up in the Canarys.

  • american star good choice i love the ss america i would love to see a model of the normandie or the queen mary 2 now that would be interesting!

  • I like them too, I will see what I can do.

  • forgot to ask what scale are you planning to do it im guess its going to be huge

  • 13 Feet long. Being built on two sections, around the same area where it broke into on Fuertoventura. Wayne
