@peachdica Someone correct me if I'm wrong as my school does not practice this anymore but I believe that the kicking in the stomach took place on belt tests for upper students after they completed their test
Sparring has its place in kenpo. You need to simulate an attack so you are better prepared if attacked on the street and sparring is as close as you can get without beating the shit out of each other. I'm not a big fan of all the dry humping that was done in this video, other than that I thought it was a good .
yes agreed that sparring has it's place and attacks need to be made during such an exercise but essentially we are learning SELF DEFENCE, where is the defence in letting someone tackle you to the ground. defend yourself with any of the "rams" for example and stop with the dry humping as you eloquently put it. great intensity though so i do agree with you that it was good in that respect and hey we are all family after all, just would like our GOOD stuff showcased not just the POPULAR crap.
you know how people say there is no such thing as a stupid question well you just proved them wrong! i wrote what i was saying! read it again if you need to mate.
Two arguments which I hear a lot from traditional martial artists, and both of which are unfortunately used to discredit many modern martial arts. While the first may be the case (I know I don't apply the eyegouging, fishooking and other dirty moves I learn at RBSD whilst sparring :P), the second is just a cheapshot at groundfighting in general.
In essence, it's a mixed martial art based around karate instead of the more common option of Thaiboxing. Though I suppose that isn't really true, as a lot of great kickboxers have been karate practitioners, and kickboxing was basically a standing mixed martial art.
This is the best karate training I've ever seen. It completely blows my theory that karate is an innefective martial art out the window. It's good to see a traditional-style martial art training in such an alive way. The incorporation of groundfighting is a step I think should've been taken a long time ago.
I practice Jeff Speakman Karate. It is the most amazing form of Karate I've ever practiced. I love it! It's hard core and to the point, and I'll actually use it in a real fight.
I got beat down a bit at my Kenpo school Friday night. This video has inspired me! Very sweet. Kenpo = real fighting as displayed in this video. Your black belts look very skilled.
I train in the EKKA Headquarters in Ireland and its great to see the kind of talent you guys have in the Speakman school. Im liking the idea of fingerless gloves too!
Its also good to see that we're not the only ones that endure the "Birth of Pain!" lol.
the ground game all looks the same cause theres nothing new . grappling is grappling the changes are in the region it comes from ie sambo=judo jitsu mongilian wresling- japan judo jitsu, greece/ india wresling pancrase and so on , but dont tell brasil that cause the invented their own tech, gracies jujitsu invented the wheel also.
actually it was in he took it out along with the jujitsu got to follow the time line on how it progres , mitose, chow, the hawaii kajukenbo and then parker . if you look at kajukenbo you see the grappling . ka- rate ju -judojitsu ke- npo bo- xing. german put all back in 70s.
It's mostly BJJ and other stuff, there's no such thing as Kenpo ground fighting. Everybody is crosstraining these days I don't see why we shouldn't take useful stuff from every style.
I heard that Ed Parker wanted to incorperate ground fighting in Kenpo and there are even a few techniques that are done on the ground. But when he died...it never progressed. Everybody went and did there own thing.
first time i ever saw kenpo do realistic sparring. However if they are going to do this they should learn to stand up properly from thai and boxing as well as wrestle and bjj. These guys were very poor for black belts. They are goinig in the rigth direction however.
Why not? Does kempo not have a jab, cross, hook or front/roundhouse kicks? They can't use all of their art but they can pressure test a good amount of it.
Also, if they can't pressure test (spar heavy) and land a cross on someone's chin how are they supposed to land an eye gouge or shuto?
Wow. Pretty effective. You can know styles till you're blue in the face but nothing measures up to actual experince in the ring. Knowing your technique and knowing HOW to apply it are two different things.
kenpo is a self defence art wich i do...thats meant to dicapasitate or kill ur opponent if u were found in the situation were someone is try to attack you
That's because the kata's give a foundation in theory, but during the "real thing", things don't go according to plan. Look at MMA today, what's most effective? A combination of Muay Thai, western boxing, BJJ and wrestling. All traditional martial arts, Kenpo included, were tested in the early UFC's and most fights went to the ground which is prevelant in most fight situations.
Nice but check out Koshiki Karate, Open to all styles and is world wide. Invented By Masauki Hisataka and the Shorinjiryu Kenkokan system. Understanding of technique only comes from practicing and competing with contact. cheers
So whats the point of all the kenpo forms learnt from white to black belt? i see none of the forms used in any of the stand up or ground fighting. They are just swinging and grappling.
"I did not see any discipline at work, I just saw swinging."
Where are the Self Defense and Sparring Techniques? If you can't make them work in this controlled environment, what makes you think they will work in the street?
Full Disclosure: I took Parker Kenpo up to the Purple Belt level from a 2nd Generation Parker student and I love "The Perfect Weapon". This clip just reminds me that the day I saw my first UFC was my last day of Kenpo.
I am a Kempo practitioner for fourteen years, nowadays Kempo practitioners mostly suck, but its good to see that there are some schools that still train hard. As for street self defense, not full contact fighting (too many rules), I put kempo up top. By the way does anyone know who sings this song????????
Thanks for putting this one up, great memories of last year. Now I am looking forward to Kenpo Camp even more! The testing last year was an amazing experience, can't wait. I agree with previous poster, what song? It's a good one.
This vid is great.
