If you're right handed and normally use your right hand on the xfader, i suggest learning the stab with your right hand on the record and left hand on the fader. your right hand will control the record a little better than the left hand.
Dude, I'm attending DJ lessons and I still think you're 10000 times better than my current teacher. I didn't even know what the heck is stab until I watched your vids. I've subscribed.
Thanks DJ Angelo. Your videos is the reason why I ordered 2 reloop 6000 white edition with torque control. I am 34 and ready to learn scratching. Your videos are easy to follow and very helpfull.
Been watching your tutorial videos over and over for about 6 months now (seriously) and I have really improved as a turntablist, I'm I'm still not as fast as i'd like to be, but I now have control over my scratches, which is more important, after 6 months I'm still going back to tutorial 4,5,6... and so on. Great videos Dj Angelo.
This is an amazing tutorial! As an upcoming DJ, I would really like to use that sample you used in the video. Is there any way you could send me a link or tell me the name of it?
@dEafba5s Hi. You might need to set the counter weight on your decks to maximum (all the way forward). I do this & it's a big help. Also try not to be too heavy handed. Peace.
@DJSkillMoves Hi. I know this reply is 2 months late but that mixer is the Technics SH-EX 1200. I think it's been discontinued now along with Technics analog turntables. If you're in the market for a mixer Stanton & Vestax do some good scratch/battle mixers for relatively decent prices. If you've got loads of cash then maybe go for 1 by Rane. I've never used a Rane but they've got a great reputation. Peace.
These are dope tuturorial man. keep it up. they are super helpful even though im not on vinyl. Im on Traktor Kontrol S4 but these are still extremely helpful tutorials. Its not vinyl but it damn sure is getting close. The decks on the TKS4 have vinyl feel so its pretty dope haha
Angelo, i need some help.. Im using a Behringer Mixer DX626, it's a poor entry level mixer, so i'm having trouble using a beat on left turntable and scratching with the right one (using crossfader)... What can i do to not cut the beats that are playing on left turntable when im scratching (with crossfader)?
in most ways, the gear DOES make the DJ...let me elaborate...if you buy cheap decks with 0 torque...no progress is made... just save up to buy good decks that will last you AT LEAST 5+ years (without replacing parts etc.) you don't have to get technics, but IF you have the money for em then go for it! they're tanks!
look at the Stanton str8-150's...if you want them to imitate the Technics, you can have the pitch go from +/-50% to the Technic's +/-8%. between the Stan's and the Numarks. Its50/50
You mention that it's important to use a "scratch mixer." Does a scratch mixer also work well for mixing? Is it as simple as just changing the sharpness of the cross-fader if I want to use it for mixing as opposed to scratching?
Thank you very much for all of your time putting these videos together!! they have been the best videos to learn from!!! and I have search for many over the past years.. you're a very good instructor and turtablist.
I have a pair of numark tt200s which are directdrive vinyl tables and what I don't get is how everyone calls them newbie tables for scratching. What makes the more expensive vinyl tables so much better? Besides features like pitch bend and digital displays. Does the actual rotating plate move quicker or something?
ive been scratching bout 18 months and these tutorials r dame helpful, thell become a point were everything just comes 2gether and is like 2nd nature 2 u.u wont ave 2 think bout wot ur doing itll just happen naturally and sound gr8
I recommend learning stabs as an open fader scratch i.e. starting with you crossfader open.
It's important for combining stabs with open fader scratches like flare and chirp. If you learn it as a closed fader scratch you will close your fader each time between chirps / flares and your stabs which is redundant.
I have heard of people going into competition after a year and then you have the other end of the spectrum you have me and I have been trying on and off for 10 years!!!!
Try to learn transforms, chirps, stabs, tears, baby scratch and then take it from there.....
Try letting a sound play and bring it back cutting it 2 or 3 times on the back stroke
also fowards.. cut it twice and then cut the fader off and then repeat
angelo your vids are awesome man. got a question or 2- there's a stones throw album i see a lot of guys use, red label with yellow stones throw lettering and it has an awesome groove and some other record ive seen, one of the sides has a black spade symbol (like the playing card) with white background, any clue which records they are? i know the stones throw wasn't greatly detailed ahah but ive been wanting them since i heard em first, thanks man
Not all scratch samples have specific "names". They are just popular sounds that are used by DJs to scratch with. You can find sounds like the ones used in my videos as well as instrumental beats to scratch over on almost all scratch records, battle weapons, DJ tools etc. Just hit the decent record stores and you will find some...

Yea, it's always worth practicing. I haven't got a great mixer but practice anyway. It just means when you get a better mixxer, you'll already have some experience.
There's a few options nowadays. If you wanted to be able to mix and manipulate the track you made, you could burn the track onto a blank CD and use CD turntables (such as the Pioneer CDJ 1000s) or you could save the track as an MP3 and use MP3-controller software + turntables (such as Serato Scratch Live).
Also, you can go to certain stores and get the mp3 pressed onto a vinyl. Might cost a bit, I don't know. I haven't looked into it but maybe it's something you could do.
Hi Brahhh, My last mixer stanton SK 2F use to cut off the music on the right with the fader.( on the right turntable). Now i have a Technics 1200 SH DX and this mixers cuts off the record on the LEFT??? Can i make it cut off on the right? Or is it just made like this? So some mixers cut off LEFT and RIGHT? Thanks
You must have had your Stanton SK 2F crossfader in reverse, (otherwise know as Hamster style) which is a feature available on most scratch mixers today. Your Technics SH DX 1200 mixer is an older model so does not have a Hamster switch. This means the crossfader will behave normally (crossfader to the left cuts off right turntable, crossfader to the right cuts off left turntable).
If you really want the crossfader to work in reverse, you'll have to plug your turntables into the opposite channels of your mixer. So plug turntable 1 into channel 2 of your mixer, and turntable 2 into channel 1 of your mixer. This will achieve the same effect of reversing your crossfader but bear in mind that the controls of each channel will also be reversed. For your information, the Technics SH EX 1200 that I use in my tutorials (which replaced the SH DX 1200) does have a Hamster switch
best tutor. i've got one question. i have only one deck which is reloop 6000mk5b and mixer stanton sa 3. That's my first set to scratching, but i understand that i have to buy another deck to improve my skills. Hey Angelo. Big fan of your tutorials and showcase vids. Just wondering if there will be any more tutorials regarding scratch techniques? Your videos have helped me pick up turntablism fairly quickly. I've been looking around for some good tutorials regarding some more advanced techniques (crab scratches, etc) and nothing beats what you've got going. Very clear and informative, easy to follow. Thanks for putting these up, and great work on the production of the vids.
It doesn't look bad for its price but you get what you pay for with DJ gear, especially when it comes to scratch mixers. Always try them out if you can before you buy.
i scratch hamster style and i struggle trying to do the fast stabs..im finding it hard to open the fader with my thumb and use my finger as a spring..(i cant do it fast enough)
Stabs are more tricky hamster. I do stabs using both the thumb and movement from the wrist. Keep the xfader closed using your fingers then tap with light force from the thumb and a bit of movement from your wrist. I'll try and post a video for you. This is one of my weaker scratches! Keep practicing and be patient. Try not to rest your fingers on the mixer and rely soley on the thumb. Hope this helps! ;)
Thanks for stepping in and sharing your advice Short-e. You've got some nice skills and I hope you can offer more advice in future, especially for everyone who scratches hamster style
Another awesome tutorial! I really like how you highlighted the names of the scratches you were performing during the "Stab Cominations" section. Do you do your own video editing? It's look really professional!
With chirps, I believe you start with an open fader and cut it as soon as the sound comes in. With stabs, you start with the fader in the close position as explained in the video above.
If you're right handed and normally use your right hand on the xfader, i suggest learning the stab with your right hand on the record and left hand on the fader. your right hand will control the record a little better than the left hand.

if you can mp3 pressed onto vinyl i would advise to record your music to wav instead of mp3 with is much better in soundquality.
you can also play wav on serato vinyl but it takes up much more space in terms of megabytes.

Thanks
S8clothing 2 years ago
You must have had your Stanton SK 2F crossfader in reverse, (otherwise know as Hamster style) which is a feature available on most scratch mixers today. Your Technics SH DX 1200 mixer is an older model so does not have a Hamster switch. This means the crossfader will behave normally (crossfader to the left cuts off right turntable, crossfader to the right cuts off left turntable).
DJAngeloUK 2 years ago
If you really want the crossfader to work in reverse, you'll have to plug your turntables into the opposite channels of your mixer. So plug turntable 1 into channel 2 of your mixer, and turntable 2 into channel 1 of your mixer. This will achieve the same effect of reversing your crossfader but bear in mind that the controls of each channel will also be reversed. For your information, the Technics SH EX 1200 that I use in my tutorials (which replaced the SH DX 1200) does have a Hamster switch

Another excellent tutorial Angelo! Great breakdown of the stab scratch. Gotta ask which 'Noisy Stylus Crew' battle tool is that? 5 stars mate.
DJHydroponic 3 years ago

Hey buddy. Straight arm should help your needles stay in the groove better but you need decent needles also. I recommend Shure M-447s

Another awesome tutorial! I really like how you highlighted the names of the scratches you were performing during the "Stab Cominations" section. Do you do your own video editing? It's look really professional!

Yeah I produce the videos myself, whenever I get the time. Thanks for appreciating them...

Once again great tutorial, is there any difference between a stab and the chirp, or is a chirp just a slang term?
goobertw 3 years ago
They are 2 different techniques. I will be covering the Chirp scratch very soon!
DJAngeloUK 3 years ago
With chirps, I believe you start with an open fader and cut it as soon as the sound comes in. With stabs, you start with the fader in the close position as explained in the video above.
