There is the art piece itself. There is the critique of it. And there is how much it goes for it in the art world. Now we are living in an art world where everything is done before. We are scraping for originality. There are no real solitary artist figure. An artist is an expert. Even Rothko, after finding his medium he stuck to it. Color fields. Where the money is there is the originality. Art is streamed lined with money.
The relation between the artist and the art work is the most pure relationship. The artist is the subject. And the art work is the object. The art work is most alive is when it is under the creative hand of the artist. And when the piece is done, the art work is complete. The legacy remains.
Rothko is in many ways is about the art society. Why would any one pay millions of dollars for a canvus that has only strips of colors? It also reveals how art is made. An artist is not in isolation. Art grows out of art of before. The artist learns how to "see" the art. Kind of like, learning to drive. One learns to drive by observing the "seeing" of the teacher.
