I'm a Rock'n'Roll-kinda guy. The music that defines me is the Heavy Metal from the british isles, the driven Blues from the missisipi delta and the strange Psychedelic Rythms from europe and africa.
But you know what? This song might just be the most true, important piece of music ever written.
For one, I simply can't complain about the schmaltz and pathos - because for one, all the schmaltz and pathos in the worlds would be mere understatements.
Some of the most bittersweet tears of my entire 22-year existence dry on my cheeks as I type this. So many feelings:
So much pride&hope in the human race&what we accomplished, so much wonder as I see the footage of brave heroes traversing the stars, but so much despair and cynicism when I realize how those glorious moments are twice as old as I am. Grief, when I think of all the lost potential the end of the shuttle program signifies.... but still there is faith!
To all of those who think that because we haven't been back to the moon that the dream has been abandoned-- it hasn't. Just because the government no longer has interest doesn't mean that nobody does. Every year we're closer, as companies and individuals with their sights set on the stars plan and design and test. The space race continues, only now it's in our hands.
bad news karidrgn, we aren't going and sadly we will never go back to the moon, no in my lifetime. So that means it will be a minimum of 40+ years before we actually TRY to go back, much less go to mars...cowardly failure fear freaks of NASA wont go were the angels fear to tread.
"Life... finds a way." Or whatever Mr. Goldblum's character opined in the first bit of "Jurassic Park". The dream remains alive. Starwalker proves that.

@KattraBlake and what has mankind done to follow on? Just what have they done? Killed and burned and little else...I've lost faith in homo sapiens and their paltry false gods. They are no better than the planets where the cyanobacteria never evolved past the single cell state.
@GrigoriZhukov Hell Yes. But If we give up how will it get any better. We are the keepers of our future. Not some nameless faceless they. No you be and the guy next door. So what have you done to make our would a better place today. I am knitting market bags so there will be less trash.
I watched it happen, too. My parents let us stay up late to watch.
Been enjoying Ms. Fish and Ms. Ecklar's work since first seeing them at a con in the 80's. Nice to hear this one again paired with some great historical footage.

because the eagle has landed. We went to the moon, and that though you can argue it was a waste of money or that it was just big show, it was one of the greatest achivments of mankind.
Folks who say we never went to the moon make me wonder sometimes if all that many men walk on the Earth. But then I see a tribute like this and my faith in humanity is restored - thank you.
Not yet... It'll take awhile before we get lunar colonies, which would be safest if built at least partly underground (or "IN the moon" as you put it). However, we have had men (if not "THE Man") walk ON the moon, and not just once either.
For the Egale has landend. Tell your children when when time grows old but u never surender.

I cry when I hear this song, because I know what has been lost and abandoned. We should have bases on the Moon and Mars. And be reaching farther.
But human's lack of vision and self destruction instincts have ground us down.
2dragonet 2 years ago 3
so when will we go to Mars? When will we have a base on both?

40 years ago on this date.. Humanity escaped the grip of gravity and laid claim to the stars. One small step for man.. One giant leap for Mankind.
And one day we will return to the stars enmass to carry the Hope of Life to distant worlds.

I love this song. I cry when I hear it. It really defines the need to reach for the stars and beyond our planet.

Ugliest damn tune since "Rock of Ages" -- so why is this song as beautiful as Schiller's "Ode to Freedom"?
