I agree that USA was good in the past. Growing up in the late 1970s, early 80s, our cable system would bring on USA Network during the weekdays in the afternoon (I believe after leaving C-SPAN and House of Reps), and first show Calliope, then it would often be a Knicks Game or a Rangers Game from Madison Square Garden on the same channel, then on Thu. nights, it would be baseball. On weekends, hard-hitting documentaries from the UK would show Sat. afternoon, called "The English Channel."
This was my favorite weekend TV show. USA used to run 3-4 episodes of Night Flight back-to-back, so they would start around 9 at night and end around 4-5am Sunday morning. My roommates and I would sometimes watch all night.
1:28 - the intro to China Crisis's Working in Fire and Steel. Plus I found the comments on NOTLD to be exaggerated. But maybe that has to do with what movies come out these days.
Producer Cynthia Friedland was a sweetheart..she passed away from Cancer. Never told me she had it. Asked me to come and see her one day..after our meeting she hugged me ...but it was a hug that made me feel something was up...sweet lady I will always miss her....fp
Night Flight was probably my favorite thing ever to exist on Television. So many different things - animation, film, music. Nothing will ever replace it for me.
It's hard to believe this show ever existed. It was so ballsy. I can't imagine a network executive even PROPOSING such a venture in today's television climate.
Night Flight was a precursor to todays YouTube :) back when art, music videos and short films were creative and had that independant feeling , but you know what i miss the most about Night Flight?? Them erotic 1-900 phone sex commercials that came on during commercial breaks
Thanks for posting these bumpers! I miss Night Flight. I love that graphic with the moon, the city lights, rivers, etc. I'm so glad I grew up in the 80's! I miss those days sooo much.
What a brilliant show that was. I particularly loved the featured animated short films. So creative. SOOOOO agree with the sentiment about late night back then v. today's infomercial onslaught. TV got its most interesting in the wee hours back then. Wonderful stuff for insomniacs like myself. Cheers, all.
Back in the day when USA was good....Night Flight, Commander USA, Saturday Nightmares.....NF was the place I got my first taste of The Cars, The Police, Reggae Sunsplash, the making of "Dune." It started at 11p.m. and started all over again at 3 a.m.! It was the REASON to stay up. All with Pat Prescott inviting the creatures, stoners, losers, socially inept with her "Welcome to Night Flight!" intrto.--you knew you were ready for the unkown and weird.
This is one of the biggest reasons that I miss growing up in the 1980's. If you stayed up late, you got to see stuff like "Night Flight", USA Network's "Up All Night", and all sorts of Late, Late Shows that were showcases of B-Movies, music videos, and all sorts of awesome weirdness that made it worth staying up. Now days if you stay up the only thing on are infomercials trying to sell you junk, so we're all brain-dead on the Internet wasting time rather than seeing cool new stuff.
It used to come on every Friday night in Memphis around 11PM. when we got cable in Oct, 1981, i was channel surfing and they just happen to show some Beatle clips..i was hooked. almost every week until '86(when i left for the Navy)i watched or tuned in to NF. I watched it sparingly after that and when i came home from the Navy, i stopped watching it. the prime yrs for this show were from 1980-1987
This show may have well helped prevent myself and others my age when it was on by giving us an alternative to the endless possibilities ( in particular the bad ones ) that a person could have gotten into well in the morning hours Saturday and Sunday of the 80"s. Never have seen a format like it since and trying to explain it to someone that never saw it is a loosing proposition.
@cdfgh1111 What was that short on NF where there was a pair of female lips telling you in 10 seconds you will awake to full consciousness? Then she told you to avoid driving thru part of North america because of high radiation. It was really trippy.Ive been trying to find it without much luck on youtube.
The 80's were fun...but they had just as many problems as any era. We tend to look back on the past through rose colored glasses. That being said, was there ever another era as wacky as the style, music, fads etc. of the 80's?
I always loved the announcer's voice on this show. Smart and sexy. I see here her name is Pat Prescott. Wish she did movie trailers...so sick of that one guy who does them all! Was this show syndicated or was it on like TBS or something?
i remember something like this but it was the 1990's and it must have been the stuff where Tom Juarez. These shows were seen as late as 1996. with nothing but music videos and this guy talking
i must have started watching this when i was in 5th grade after everyone else went to bed. it was my favorite show. it is probably mostly responsible for turning me into the freak i am. yeah night flight!!
@chosen11979 i agree..i was between 11 1/2 and 21yrs old between1980-1989. that decade went by SO FAST! I would make a few changes if i could relive the 80's....very small insignificant changes...otherwise, i'm like you, leave everything else just as it was.
@elwin38 the 2000's and 2010's arent as good in a lot of ways. i miss the 70's and 80's.even parts of the 90's were better. At least we have the internet(one of the few good things about today)to find stuff from the past.
@chosen11979 Same here brotha. Same here. I used to sneak in the room to watch some Night Flight on Fridays and Saturday nights. The 80's was just so fucking awesome. USA Network was much better in the 80's.
@cheapcape Thanks to all the merger shit in 1997. I also blame the big bucks man who are trying to push more networks to be sister stations. Even CBS used to be good in the late 70's and the 80's.

@monkeybash3000 Im glad i was born in 1968.I have the year 1986 on my user id because thats the year i graduated high school.I remember staying up to 3am watching NF and if i missed anything they had an encore of everything till 6am.
@MrJacMac1986 i was born the same yr(on May 7). class of '86. i used to watch this from 1981-1986. i used to enjoy watching the Beatles clips and movies. NF is where i saw Magical Mystery Tour for the 1st time. Generation X rocks!
@elwin38 yeah i really liked that short called"JacMac and Radboy Go!"NF is where i also saw Pink Floyd at Pompeii and later got it on VHS.I liked all the arty music videos and independent short films as well as interviews.NF was more than just music videos unlike TBS Night Tracks or NBC Friday Night Videos. In some ways it was like Youtube before Youtube.
@monkeybash3000 Haha! I ran into lots of those in Community College and they are braindead about American history during the 80's. What I do not get is why are they trying to make their generation look so good? Because the 90's was boring and uneventful. I am 30, and I got to see all of the 80's when I was young.
it wasn't so bad-I was born in 83-so I got to experience all the great 80's kids stuff/cartoons toys etc. and as cool as it must have been to be a teen in the 80's, I think it was an even better time to be a child.
And the 90's was a pretty good time to be a teen-I do feel sorry for anyone born in the 90's or later though.
What memories this brings back! Coming home late, not tired yet, turn on USA, and watch 2 hours of awesome, revolutionary, unique programming. And they re-played it again a few hours later!
I used to record these VO Bumpers with Pat Prescott back in the day!

I was born 1970 and lived for Night Flight in the 80's. It was the only reason to party in the 80s of Friday night next to Miami Vice and booze.

Night Flight was far better than MTV. 4 hours Friday night, then repeat until 5 AM.
Saturday night different show.
Then they started 2 hours of one band, etc. videos with interviews.
Fantastic !
