@coolsweetgroovy Correction, make that continually coming back to make the same joke over the course of a year. Jesus Christ, there's some weirdos on YouTube.
Ricky Fattar and Blondie Chaplin were in a South African band called The Flame - Carl Wilson produced them and they joined the band for a couple years - Daryl Dragon can also be found in some videos (though not this one) - aka The Captain from Captain and Tenelle - he wrote songs with Dennis sometimes...
This is amazing! The Beach Boys at Brighton Beach UK with the West Pier in the background, and what a great song from an amazing album. What a treasure, thank you Beach Boys for bringing music into our lives!
That is great to have this video treasure. The truth is that the Beach Boys kept going on without Brian in creating this type of track. Brian retreated from the world to bed.
OK - I'll be the one who'll make a sane comment - and without a filthy vocabulary. Well done Beach Boys for making a bold "green" statement about 30-40 years before most other bands did . . . a class act.
@24rusguy I'm not a moron idiot everyone misspells something once in awhile I'm going to guess that you love the taste of wax so I'll let you get back to sucking on Melinda's whatever
Could someone please point out Blondie and Ricky i know about both of them but have not seen them in pictures P.S. Who's the guy playing guitar with the hat? he lookslike Michael Jackson
I tend to believe that Al Jardine had more to do with this song than Mikey (you know, the person all music lovers are inclined to dislike) and probably Carl Wilson, too. Mike Love would be a great cast for portraying Charlie Manson. He really creeps me out. I get no Good Vibrations from that dude. Of the surviving Beach Boys, in order of talent I would have to say Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston. BTW, there was a reason Pink Floyd used Bruce for The Wall. He knew what they wanted.
Why don't people like Mike Love? He is a law-suit happy control freak who aggressively tried to keep Brian (the creative one responsible for writing and producing all of the BB's best music) from exploring musically. When Brian had mental health issues, Mike hired thugs to "protect him," but they basicly held him prisoner (read Brian's auto biography "Wouldn't It Be Nice for more info on this). Mike now owns the copyright to the BB's name, and won't let Brian use it to perform his own songs.
To TheUpperRoom477 - Dennis was involved in a chainsaw accident and wasn't able to play drums for quite a while (actually, he was not that good a drummer)...it was around that time when Carl saw this African group called "The Flame" and was struck by its two members, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar. Carl recruited Chaplin (vocals & guitar) and Fataar (drums) and were on both the "Carl & The Passions" and "Holland" albums. Blondie was the lead singer on "Sail on Sailor".
What the hell? Great song, weird look. Mike Love looks like a Charles Manson look-a-like. Carl Wilson was the only one of the Beach Boys who could truly pull off a beard.
@sfan1 I think any man who has long-ish hair and a big beard will inevitably look like Charles Manson. the unique shapes of the jawline and chin are lost in the beard and all you can discern are the eyes and nose.
The period from 1970 through 1974 was a very creative time, despite inner family turmoil and Brian's retreat from the public. The problem was the music business, mainly. They lost their audience, resulting in lack of concert appearances and poor album sales. But the quality of their music, no matter who was writing or producing, never suffered. "Sunflower", Surf's Up", "Carl & The Passions" and "Holland" and "In Concert" contain dozens of brilliant songs that just kind of got lost. Too bad!
@tonyrocco55 So many fans deserted them when they abandoned the surf boards and hot rods and got socially conscious. I say those fans are the ones who lost out.
Around 1971 Dennis suffered a significant hand accident (cut, i think) and was off the drums for three years. the gentleman on the drums was officially a Beach Boy, Ricky Fataar as was his band mate Blondie Chaplain , both formerly of The Flame . The Flame was produced by Carl Wilson. Both Ricky and Blondie left the band sometime shortly after Carl and The Passions, So tough album.
@TheUpperRoom477 dennis put his hand through a plate glass door and cut a tendon so they picked up a singing drumming rutle ricky fataar [ its in one of those movies an american family ]
@DrRonGrassi1953 Makes sense, the 'tail end'. I Dr, Ron, I am hoping to re-record this song myself and, replete with a video, post it on Youtube and make the song available for download from vasrious sites. Naturally, I will pay all associated copyright fees " mechanical license' " and/or " compulsory license") to the publisher/copyright holder, as I have on all Beach Boys material I have ever covered on either of my two CD releases. I am working on a third now. John
@BeachBoysGuy1 .......Yes JHP: I see this as a golden opportunity to get that tune out there.......It's been laying dormant for 40 yrs.......!.....Don't wast too much time on obsessive compulsive production. Just get it out there ASAP. You can tweek that later. The networks wiil refer to this appropriate song of the time. It deserves this shot by a person as talented as you are ! " one for the boy's".......Dr Ron. Jupiter, FL.
Mike Love has taken most of the negative crap that so called fans have thrown at him (and has no doubt suffered from it) but to this day he keeps the music and spirit of the music alive and I thank him for that! Sing on Mike
So much for a Beach Boys reunion in 2011, despite Mike Love's opinion one a reunion earlier this year, Brian Wilson says NOT HAPPENING after the most recent stint Mike pulled on Brian by suing him in 2005, Brian says they just don't get along and will not play with him anymore. I know it puts a lump in my throat too.
This video was shot in May of 1972. On May 27 the Beach Boys appeared in concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London. I should know - I was there. What a great concert!
@Mozzer232 I love the Beach Boys and especially the "Sunflower" album, but "Surf's Up" really doesn't do it for me except for the pair of Brian songs at the end. And I guess "Feel Flows" is alright. This song just comes off as preachy and dorky to me.
I think this song is just great, despite the fact that it wasn't written by Brian and, horror of horrors, Mike Love was one of the composers. It has a very valid message which is still topical and a beautiful ending to boot. "Surf's up" was a great effort by the whole band and is probably the best Beach Boys album, eclipsing even "Pet Sounds".
@relimes I'm just getting into the beach boys, so I don't get why everyone hates Mike Love. Has he done something awful to the others or something like that? I would like to know..
@Linnung : Brian is the most creative one of the band.. And Mike did not like Brian's new music ( especially Smile ), that's why smile was only released few years ago as a Brian Wilson album. And Mike never wrote a song on his own .. just lyrics. (read more on wikipedia )
Roy Five: 4 of the 10, in my opinion very best songs on the album Surf's Up, are written/co written by Brian Wilson, and as far as i'm concerned he sings and plays in all of them, or at least most of them.
After a nervous breakdown back in 1964, Brian had decided not to tour with the band and to stay home and write new music. A few years later he didn't even appear when they performed locally (TV shows for example). It's common knowledge now that drugs had a lot to do with it. Brian started touring again in 1976.
Thanks for the year it was filmed, you can now see restored Brighton Bandstand on my channel. It was last used in 1974 but now reopened 24th July 2009. Shame about the West Pier which is now just a skeleton of its former self.
Haha, being afraid of Phil Spector coming to kill him! That's some scary shit! Don't do harder drugs kids! Marijuana is fine, and probably good for you. But no ACID!
Nothing like an Al Jardine rap.

Thanks for the year it was filmed, you can now see restored Brighton Bandstand on my channel. It was last used in 1974 but now reopened 24th July 2009. Shame about the West Pier which is now just a skeleton of its former self.
