  • @mckendrick4046 Nothing I just wanted to know when did Michael Jackson join The Beach Boys

  • @coolsweetgroovy Dude, we get it. The joke bombed. No need to repeat it 2 months later.

  • @coolsweetgroovy Correction, make that continually coming back to make the same joke over the course of a year. Jesus Christ, there's some weirdos on YouTube.

  • @peterp21 ok cool it you don't need to bite my head off Iand I just found out from another vid that thr MJ lookalike is Blondie Chapman

  • Jack Rieley, their manager at the time, gave the band a new direction emphasizing, political and social awareness.

  • they look like hillbillies they should be singing this on a mountain

  • sounds like al's rapping

  • Ricky Fattar and Blondie Chaplin were in a South African band called The Flame - Carl Wilson produced them and they joined the band for a couple years - Daryl Dragon can also be found in some videos (though not this one) - aka The Captain from Captain and Tenelle - he wrote songs with Dennis sometimes...

  • This is amazing! The Beach Boys at Brighton Beach UK with the West Pier in the background, and what a great song from an amazing album. What a treasure, thank you Beach Boys for bringing music into our lives!

  • I never knew Ricky Fataar was a Beach Boy! I only knew him from the Rutles.

  • The ending is very good! one of the good ones from Surf's Up

  • I highly dedicate this song to Dennis Wilson's death, Rest In Peace forever Dennis, we will never forget you.

  • Great to see this video. Mike Love projects zero charisma in it.

  • @Ghoopty : I don't like him much, but his beard looks great : it makes him look like Levon Helm !

  • I didn't know Michael Jackson played guitar and was with The Beach Boys oh wait that's Blondie Chapman who's just similar my bad

  • Comment removed

  • That is great to have this video treasure. The truth is that the Beach Boys kept going on without Brian in creating this type of track. Brian retreated from the world to bed.

  • OK - I'll be the one who'll make a sane comment - and without a filthy vocabulary. Well done Beach Boys for making a bold "green" statement about 30-40 years before most other bands did . . . a class act.

  • @MrBazza86 Amen

  • The Beach Boys way ahead of the times

  • Please feel free to ignore those 2 idiots @relimes and @24rsguy Don't go near the water when Melinda Wilson is in it

  • @coolsweetgroovy Hey fuck you buddy

  • @24rusguy I'm not an idot I don't like dissing other people why don't you go suck on Melinda whatever hope you don't mind the taste of wax

  • @coolsweetgroovy Learn to spell. Moron.

  • @24rusguy I'm not a moron idiot everyone misspells something once in awhile I'm going to guess that you love the taste of wax so I'll let you get back to sucking on Melinda's whatever

  • @coolsweetgroovy Who the fuck is Melinda Wilson ? Hurry now, your Mothers cunt needs licking.

  • @24rusguy Melinda is Brian Wilson's second wife idiot hurry now her whatever is waiting hope you don't mind the taste of wax

  • Could someone please point out Blondie and Ricky i know about both of them but have not seen them in pictures P.S. Who's the guy playing guitar with the hat? he lookslike Michael Jackson

  • @coolsweetgroovy The guy in the hat (toque) is Carl Wilson. Blondie is the guy on the far left with the guitar, Ricky is on the drums.

  • @TheKrammerhead Thank you

  • @relimes you're so mean and @24rsguy that's so not funny

  • whos the guitarist playing the gold les paul to the left

  • @duke35000 that's Blondie Chaplin, he sung on a few Beach Boys tunes and played guitar in sessions on Carl and the Passions.

  • Someone should of told Dennis this.

  • @24rusguy Ouch. That's a spicy meatball.

  • Wow. Wow. This makes "Kokomo" almost sound bearable.

  • Christ, just where do you geezers find this beautiful shit? ;-)

  • Why does that look like the Palace Pier, in Brighton, East Sussex, England. I used to work in this town????

  • @Christoph981 That was exactly what I was thinking while watching this. I need to know for sure now.

  • I tend to believe that Al Jardine had more to do with this song than Mikey (you know, the person all music lovers are inclined to dislike) and probably Carl Wilson, too. Mike Love would be a great cast for portraying Charlie Manson. He really creeps me out. I get no Good Vibrations from that dude. Of the surviving Beach Boys, in order of talent I would have to say Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston. BTW, there was a reason Pink Floyd used Bruce for The Wall. He knew what they wanted.

  • Mike you have convinced me, i will not go near the water

  • I love Al in the middle section....great singing

  • This is great! Thanks for posting this. I didn't know this existed and it's great to see them with Ricky and Blondie.

  • Is that Brighton Pier? I wouldn't go in the water there that's for sure.

  • Why don't people like Mike Love? He is a law-suit happy control freak who aggressively tried to keep Brian (the creative one responsible for writing and producing all of the BB's best music) from exploring musically. When Brian had mental health issues, Mike hired thugs to "protect him," but they basicly held him prisoner (read Brian's auto biography "Wouldn't It Be Nice for more info on this). Mike now owns the copyright to the BB's name, and won't let Brian use it to perform his own songs.

  • surfs up rocks, ive nearly got all beach boys cd`s & a few LP`s i think mid 60`s to mid 70`s was the best of the beach boys, but i love it all

  • To TheUpperRoom477 - Dennis was involved in a chainsaw accident and wasn't able to play drums for quite a while (actually, he was not that good a drummer)...it was around that time when Carl saw this African group called "The Flame" and was struck by its two members, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar. Carl recruited Chaplin (vocals & guitar) and Fataar (drums) and were on both the "Carl & The Passions" and "Holland" albums. Blondie was the lead singer on "Sail on Sailor".

  • Chainsaw accident? I recall reading that he put his hand through the glass of a screen door.

  • why does everyone hate mike love? I think he's a great singer and a great personality!

  • @Linnung are you kidding? he pretty much destroyed the beach boys, destroyed brian wilson, destroyed smile, and is/was a total prick

    seriously...

  • @ironbmike Yeah, I learned that after I posted that commentary. I didn't really know much about the story of the beach boys at the time.

  • @Linnung I of course meant COMMENT not COMMENTARY, sorry for my bad english :P

  • @Linnung I agree he even flirted with me

  • I guess BP missed this:(

  • Okay mike, you have convinced me, i wont go near it.

  • I lost my tent to the river!! (Flooding) I will never camp near the water now!! :( :P

  • What the hell? Great song, weird look. Mike Love looks like a Charles Manson look-a-like. Carl Wilson was the only one of the Beach Boys who could truly pull off a beard.

  • @sfan1 I think any man who has long-ish hair and a big beard will inevitably look like Charles Manson. the unique shapes of the jawline and chin are lost in the beard and all you can discern are the eyes and nose.

  • HOW APPROPRIATE IS THIS SONG TODAY???

  • The period from 1970 through 1974 was a very creative time, despite inner family turmoil and Brian's retreat from the public. The problem was the music business, mainly. They lost their audience, resulting in lack of concert appearances and poor album sales. But the quality of their music, no matter who was writing or producing, never suffered. "Sunflower", Surf's Up", "Carl & The Passions" and "Holland" and "In Concert" contain dozens of brilliant songs that just kind of got lost. Too bad!

  • @tonyrocco55 Carl & The Passions? CARL & THE PASSIONS?????? BWAAAAAA-HAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

  • dennis should have never went under the water :( miss him.

  • Why wasnt dennis on drums in this vid

  • Around 1971 Dennis suffered a significant hand accident (cut, i think) and was off the drums for three years. the gentleman on the drums was officially a Beach Boy, Ricky Fataar as was his band mate Blondie Chaplain , both formerly of The Flame . The Flame was produced by Carl Wilson. Both Ricky and Blondie left the band sometime shortly after Carl and The Passions, So tough album.

  • @TheUpperRoom477 dennis put his hand through a plate glass door and cut a tendon so they picked up a singing drumming rutle ricky fataar [ its in one of those movies an american family ]

  • crude oil and gas will make our oceans a flaming mass

so lets avoid an ecological after blast

    beginning with me

    beginning with you

  • looks like some of them drank that water they are warning us about!

  • another reason the beach boys rock, they can tell the future. This should be the new BP pr ad.

  • peace and conscience love to all life~~~

  • /watch?v=iBXf9pygAB0

  • happy birthday brian wilson

  • Why was a new video containing this song, which I never saw but heard about, taken down ?

  • Is this not most appropriate at this time considering the BP oil spill ! This should be the "oil company" mantra. Dr Ron, Jupiter, FL. USA.

  • God I have always loved that A Capella ending

    jhp

  • @BeachBoysGuy1 Yeah John. Dennis used to call this "the tail" of the song.

  • @DrRonGrassi1953 Makes sense, the 'tail end'. I Dr, Ron, I am hoping to re-record this song myself and, replete with a video, post it on Youtube and make the song available for download from vasrious sites. Naturally, I will pay all associated copyright fees " mechanical license' " and/or " compulsory license") to the publisher/copyright holder, as I have on all Beach Boys material I have ever covered on either of my two CD releases. I am working on a third now. John

  • @BeachBoysGuy1 .......Yes JHP: I see this as a golden opportunity to get that tune out there.......It's been laying dormant for 40 yrs.......!.....Don't wast too much time on obsessive compulsive production. Just get it out there ASAP. You can tweek that later. The networks wiil refer to this appropriate song of the time. It deserves this shot by a person as talented as you are ! " one for the boy's".......Dr Ron. Jupiter, FL.

  • Amazing how relevant this is now with the Gulf oil spill. :-(

  • Don't Go Near The Gulf

  • I'd like to dedicate this one to the oily beaches of new orleans

  • what's with all the Mike Love hate?

  • @whoareyou342 Read about him and you'll find out, though I think it is a little extreme.

  • los beach boys en costanera sur!

  • divinos. encantadores. aparatos..... los amo DEMASIADO. Brian no podía estar más bueno...

  • Mike Love has taken most of the negative crap that so called fans have thrown at him (and has no doubt suffered from it) but to this day he keeps the music and spirit of the music alive and I thank him for that! Sing on Mike

  • mike love looks like a trampy paedo.....what a meff!!!!! =D

  • Mike Love smells of toes

  • when Al is singing he sounds like he's raping.

  • Carl and Mike look like 'old men of the sea'!

  • Jesus Christ Mike Love has such a thick beard u can hardly see his mouth move when he sings!

  • HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • CHECK OUT THE DUDE WITH THE FRO!!

  • That's Blondie Chaplin, dude!

  • Is Dennis playing the harmonica at the end of the video?

  • Yup. He sure is. Makes ya wonder what DOESN'T he play, huh? ;-)

  • @DEOGIUSI - Yes, I think so. He plays three notes!

  • Mike Love has the beard that would crack u up!

  • Played the album (vinyl) in it's entirety this evening. Left me feeling revived. Surfs Up!

    Superb!

  • Wonderful song which was well ahead of its time.

  • dennis wilson cracks me up, his beard mostly

  • Dennis is clean shaven and on the keyboard I believe.

  • So much for a Beach Boys reunion in 2011, despite Mike Love's opinion one a reunion earlier this year, Brian Wilson says NOT HAPPENING after the most recent stint Mike pulled on Brian by suing him in 2005, Brian says they just don't get along and will not play with him anymore. I know it puts a lump in my throat too.

  • This video was shot in May of 1972. On May 27 the Beach Boys appeared in concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London. I should know - I was there. What a great concert!

  • I love the last 30 seconds of this song. Very reminscent of the something that could have been on SMiLE.

  • you mean a terrific song from an amazing album... Only a souless human being would trash it...

  • @Mozzer232 I love the Beach Boys and especially the "Sunflower" album, but "Surf's Up" really doesn't do it for me except for the pair of Brian songs at the end. And I guess "Feel Flows" is alright. This song just comes off as preachy and dorky to me.

  • You're right - it was wrong of them to preach about not polluting the water. Oh wait.

  • I think this song is just great, despite the fact that it wasn't written by Brian and, horror of horrors, Mike Love was one of the composers. It has a very valid message which is still topical and a beautiful ending to boot. "Surf's up" was a great effort by the whole band and is probably the best Beach Boys album, eclipsing even "Pet Sounds".

  • this was filmed in Brighton,England..on the bandstand...next to the West Pier (which sadly is now just a burnt out skelton)...blv was filmed 1970

  • Very interesting! Does anyone know where this video was shot? Was it California or someplace else?

  • Don't go near the water when Mike Love is in it.

  • ROFLMAO!!!

  • hehehehhe!!!

  • @relimes Ha! i didn't even have to wait for this to start streaming to laugh at that

  • @relimes I'm just getting into the beach boys, so I don't get why everyone hates Mike Love. Has he done something awful to the others or something like that? I would like to know..

  • @Linnung : Brian is the most creative one of the band.. And Mike did not like Brian's new music ( especially Smile ), that's why smile was only released few years ago as a Brian Wilson album. And Mike never wrote a song on his own .. just lyrics. (read more on wikipedia )

  • Don't go near the water when you're drunk.

  • don't go near the water without your swimmies, don't go near the water without your bathing suit

-my version i think it is tight

    lmao

  • CANCION DE 1971 DE SU ALBUM SURF'S UP

  • ::walkin away:: what the hell was that shit?

  • Roy Five: 4 of the 10, in my opinion very best songs on the album Surf's Up, are written/co written by Brian Wilson, and as far as i'm concerned he sings and plays in all of them, or at least most of them.

  • Dennis´ on the piano

  • yep the old fender rhodes

  • 1:16

  • Where was Brian and Dennis?

  • After a nervous breakdown back in 1964, Brian had decided not to tour with the band and to stay home and write new music. A few years later he didn't even appear when they performed locally (TV shows for example). It's common knowledge now that drugs had a lot to do with it. The other guys started picking up the slack about this time with writing new songs. According to Bruce Johnston, Brian didn't have very much to do with the album this is on (Surf's Up). Brian started touring again in 1976.

  • Dennis is playing keyboards. He injured his hand in 1971 and didn't play drums for a while after that.

  • Dennis is there.

  • wow my Boys look as stoned as rasta s here. Awesome

  • blondie was singing w/ the rolling stones if i recall correctly.

  • Blondie Chaplin was the best singer ever to be in the beach boys.dont get it twisted

    billy bob.

  • I think it is worth a mention that this was filmed on the Brighton Bandstand alonside the now derelict West Pier.

Does anyone know when this was filmed?

  • early '72.

  • Thanks for the year it was filmed, you can now see restored Brighton Bandstand on my channel. It was last used in 1974 but now reopened 24th July 2009. Shame about the West Pier which is now just a skeleton of its former self.

  • 'Beginning with me, beginning with you'. How prophetic! Many thanks.

  • very strange song !!!

  • Because of this song, i will no longer go near any water.

  • Yes.

  • Like yourself I have devoted myself to avoiding an ecological aftermath.

  • @jakenstein77

    YEW BE'S RIGHT, KING JAKE!

  • 70's man

  • they look like hobos

  • they look like surfers

  • stupid question- is brian wilson on here?

  • Not at all. He's home in bed during this period

  • Haha, being afraid of Phil Spector coming to kill him! That's some scary shit! Don't do harder drugs kids! Marijuana is fine, and probably good for you. But no ACID!
