i take from the cost guard boat to ambulance.

  • My thoughts and my sympathy go to his family and friends. Fran Crippen didn't deserve this and I'm sad about it, but this is not about me, but about a great swimmer who inspired many young people to be something great in life.I think the water temperature was a factor to Fran Crippen's death. You will never be forgotten, Fran. RIP.

  • devastating...RIP

  • rest in peace. he seems like a nice guy.

  • My coach is best friends with Fran. They went to school together. This morning my coach could barely talk and had to leave as soon as he heard the news. Very devastating. If only FINA had a policy/regulation that states under any circumstance no swimmer can swim in water that is below or above a certain average water temperature. It saddens me how his death could have been prevented. The race should have been called off or postponed. Safer conditions are needed. Rip Fran

What has the water temperature to do with this ? It can only be a problem if it's too cold. The water in the sea is never so warm that it can cause problems to your health. Crippen died due to heat exhaustion- which may have led to drowning- during the final lap of the race. It was the outer temperature that caused his death. Nonetheless he maybe had some problems from the day before, he told his coach that he wasn't feeling well the day before the race.

  • @hanselkksc

The water temperature was almost 90 degrees Fahrenheit while the air temperature was about 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The water was so hot it was a contribution to the heat exhaustion. Dehydration was a factor of this most likely also. The amount of sweat he was probably losing was great. If your salt level goes below a certain point you pass out. The water temperature is a factor in why this happened.
