The RN is a pathetic vestige of what it used to be. Highly profitable company BAe Systems now has a monopoly on all ship and submarine building for the RN. Major programs involving BAe including the RN’s Astute submarines and Type 45 destroyers are massively over-budget, years late and have significant technical problems.

The fact of the matter is this. Though Britain has faced cuts in its Military. We are still the best. Numbers do not always matter. I have no doubts that the US has excellent up to date equipment and lots of it. That does not make it best. Russia has more deliverable though dated Nuclear Warheads than US. Does that make them better. I still think that Britain pound for pound has the best Airforce, best Navy, best Army and most certainly best Special Forces. SAS End of.
@cdtleeds Any country which has the capability to send a nuclear weapon to a target is the best. When we go into the conversation of the best, its about who will create the most fear and damage. Britain in the 1800's was probably the ones who did this, they not only caused great damage to enemies and crushed anyone but they caused a widespread burst of strength through the people which lead to a great industrial complex which defeated the Nazis.

In WW2, the U.S had sent steel to Germany even though they knew that it was for war materials. The British got U.S assistance after pearl harbor, quite like WW1 when the Lusitania which was sunk by Germans.

@capenati The French navy is not coming close to the royal navy, we have the Astute class subs, Darling class type 45 destroyers and two air craft carriers along with 70 f-35 stealth fighters, the French will depend on Britain for the use of one of those carriers if they need it on tour, the French have no Destroyers, Britain will have 13 more Frigates by 2020 which are the Global combat frigates, and no the US has the most capable military, Britain has the best trained military in the world.

@asianiinvasion Italy has 4 Destroyers: 2 Horizon Class (state-of-art destroyers), and 2 Durand de La Penne Class. Juan Carlos is a good and flexible amphibious ship which can support some aircraft, not a real aircraft carrier and not comparable with the Cavour; Italy has 2 aircraft carriers. I think the Armada is a good navy but not at the level of the italian one.

@TheJollyRoger1979 Hello, the "Juan Carlos I" isn't a LHA, is a BPE, a ship with more capabilities than a LHD also has carrier cofiguration accommodating up to 30 aircraft (including the F-35) and comparable in all respects to "El Cavour". The aircraft carrier "Príncipe de Asturias" is fully operational (check the website of the Spanish Navy).

The US Navy is still probably stronger then every navy in the world combined. @2992evileagle I dont deny that Israel has much better training, but US has better planes, and its 18K (3K fighters) planes for US vs 2K (400 fighters) planes for Israel. Not to mention that all Israel planes are American. Again, US dominates.
However, pilots on the US Navy (not the airforce)are better trained then Israeli counterparts.

I dont want to get into a nationalistic rant but China's main powers are economic. they lack aircraft carriers when America has 11 heavy carriers and 9 light with 1 heavy and 1 light under construction. @2992evileagle It is a very very wide debate, but in the 21st century, Navies are one of if not the most important part of influence around the world and for power. The Chinese sure do have the largest army in the world but that army is only capable of defending its own country or invading somewhere in Asia. Power projection is HUGE. That's why America has the top navy because it can put Marines on the ground anywhere in the world. China is very rapidly changing that.

The size of Spain seems to be really small, so i cant really say that Spain is a strong navy.It's kinda weird that Spain has 2 carriers, but no destroyers and only 4 subs.

@TheMadMontage Well said bud. The Treaty of London 1928 (I think) put the US Navy and the RN on a parity. Once again Britain came out with the 'shitty end of the stick'. The treaty was about arms regulation, on a par with the SALT Talks. I heard a historian comment once that 'eventhough it did not stop WW2, it may well have stopped the 1930 Trade War between Britain and America'. Now, I know this war never happened, but it may well have done if these talks had not have taken place.
The American War of Independance had no bearing on who was top dog. Unfortunately for the English, we had a little problem with the French at that time and to be honest, didn't take the revolution all that seriously (to our detriment). But then again eventhough I am English, taxation without representation is tyranny. The US has a lot to thank France for their independance (Statue of Liberty) But unfortunately for us English, 2 world wars left us bankrupt. (saving France, how ironic)

USN is definitely the most powerful in the world, but I don't think the same for the RN, and especially France. Russia has more, and better ships of all classes, like heavy cruisers Kerch, Kirov, Kiev and etc. Russia has better and faster destroyers, and fast attack boats with improved technology, missiles and radar.
Russian ships are the best (especially heavy cruisers), but Russian fleet is to small to compare with the USN.

I an NOT Anit-American. In fact I love America, there are such wonderful places, and I have British and American family all over USA. I just hate it how Americans boast about having the best things lol. America is only politically number one (i.e. power) and thats it. Europe has the best cars and best at most sports etc...Every country has its strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the day every American is an imagrant whereas the UK, China, Russia etc are not. The fact of the matter is this. Though Britain has faced cuts in its Military. We are still the best. Numbers do not always matter. I have no doubts that the US has excellent up to date equipment and lots of it. That does not make it best. Russia has more deliverable though dated Nuclear Warheads than US. Does that make them better. I still think that Britain pound for pound has the best Airforce, best Navy, best Army and most certainly best Special Forces. SAS End of.

Britain in the 1800's was probably the ones who did this, they not only caused great damage to enemies and crushed anyone but they caused a widespread burst of strength through the people which lead to a great industrial complex which defeated the Nazis.

In WW2, the U.S had sent steel to Germany even though they knew that it was for war materials. The British got U.S assistance after pearl harbor, quite like WW1 when the Lusitania which was sunk by Germans.

@capenati The French navy is not coming close to the royal navy, we have the Astute class subs, Darling class type 45 destroyers and two air craft carriers along with 70 f-35 stealth fighters, the French will depend on Britain for the use of one of those carriers if they need it on tour, the French have no Destroyers, Britain will have 13 more Frigates by 2020 which are the Global combat frigates, and no the US has the most capable military, Britain has the best trained military in the world.

Juan Carlos is a good and flexible amphibious ship which can support some aircraft, not a real aircraft carrier and not comparable with the Cavour; Italy has 2 aircraft carriers. I think the Armada is a good navy but not at the level of the italian one.

The aircraft carrier "Príncipe de Asturias" is fully operational (check the website of the Spanish Navy).

The US Navy is still probably stronger then every navy in the world combined. The Chinese sure do have the largest army in the world but that army is only capable of defending its own country or invading somewhere in Asia. Power projection is HUGE. That's why America has the top navy because it can put Marines on the ground anywhere in the world. China is very rapidly changing that.

Well, it's difficult to choose actually. Turkish navy has 16 subs and 19 frigates.
South Korea has 14 subs and 9 friagtes, more advanced than Turkish ships
Spain has 2 carriers , one small and one average...4 subs and 10 frigates also more advanced than Turkish ships.
So u choose :)

well, Turkish navy wont be VERY powerful, but somewhat better, yes...basically non of these nations of ballistic missile subs or advanced destroyers.
The size of Spain seems to be really small, so i cant really say that Spain is a strong navy.It's kinda weird that Spain has 2 carriers, but no destroyers and only 4 subs.
Navies which are very powerful according to me are USA,Russia,France. They are called "Blue water navies"
And soon India will get into the league in couple of yrs.

Well, We dont really consider Uk to have a strong navy. Only 100 ships with a retired Carrier doesn make them strong.
Usa is undoubtly the strongest with size and tech.
Russia follows with size but not the best tech
France and India both have equal ships, and almost equally Advanced ships , but i put France ahead bcoz it's Carrier is more advanced than India.'s.
China has a huge size but 50% is outdated.
But among minor powers, all seem to be almost equal with SLIGHT difference.

@TheMadMontage Well said bud. The Treaty of London 1928 (I think) put the US Navy and the RN on a parity. Once again Britain came out with the 'shitty end of the stick'. The treaty was about arms regulation, on a par with the SALT Talks. I heard a historian comment once that 'eventhough it did not stop WW2, it may well have stopped the 1930 Trade War between Britain and America'. Now, I know this war never happened, but it may well have done if these talks had not have taken place.

The American War of Independance had no bearing on who was top dog. Unfortunately for the English, we had a little problem with the French at that time and to be honest, didn't take the revolution all that seriously (to our detriment). But then again eventhough I am English, taxation without representation is tyranny. The US has a lot to thank France for their independance (Statue of Liberty) But unfortunately for us English, 2 world wars left us bankrupt. (saving France, how ironic)

USN is definitely the most powerful in the world, but I don't think the same for the RN, and especially France. Russia has more, and better ships of all classes, like heavy cruisers Kerch, Kirov, Kiev and etc. Russia has better and faster destroyers, and fast attack boats with improved technology, missiles and radar.
Russian ships are the best (especially heavy cruisers), but Russian fleet is to small to compare with the USN.

I an NOT Anit-American. In fact I love America, there are such wonderful places, and I have British and American family all over USA. I just hate it how Americans boast about having the best things lol. America is only politically number one (i.e. power) and thats it. Europe has the best cars and best at most sports etc...Every country has its strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the day every American is an imagrant whereas the UK, China, Russia etc are not. Be proud of country :)
