Cornelius Tacitus, who lived during the time of Christ, wrote about Christ's death, calling him "Chrestus" which was a common misspelling. Tacitus was actually hostile towards Christianity, and went as far as to call it "superstition." Therefore, it would've been better for him to write off Jesus as simply never existing, however he didn't, most likely because he wanted to stay historically accurate.

I do not believe that he's making "light" of the day Jesus died... We all know that Jesus went through immense suffering for our sins, and we should take time to thank Him everyday.
